The software incompatibility issue doesn't seem to be effecting office work software. These devices are for HR, Product Managers, Data Analysts, Data Entry, front desk employees, Photo Editors, UI/UX designers etc. For most people who buy laptops and work in an office, great battery life is THE number one spec, second to being able to run Chrome well. I think spec chasers (especially those who are also PC gamers) are very detached from the overwhelming magority's needs when it comes to laptops.
Mind you, I say this as someone who knows X Elite ARM PCs aren't for me due to current day compatibility issues (I do software development and video editing via Resolve). I think these X Elite laptops are great for the purpose they were made for and advertised as.

When optimized, they will provably be a good choice for video editing.

@@krause79the main thing thing Qualcomm are behind on is GPU. But there’s also various optimisations for Apple silicon due to it being more mature - especially if you use Apples video formats and tooling (as pointed out in the video though that means less choice if you want the most out of Apple kit, which some people won’t be comfortable with)

@@DanielHarrisCodestbh, I do my video editing in Davinci resolve and Final Cut on my m1 iPad Pro. And this is more capable than that. That said, it’s not a 4K editing powerhouse. But for hobbyists who only do 1080p like me, it should be fine

Agreed. They just need to get better drivers for printers & fax machines, and these X Elite laptops could replace Intel business laptops (Dell Latitude 74XX, HP EliteBook 840 GXX, and Lenovo ThinkPad T14 GX).

Sadly, Snapdragon chips do not run basic statistical software like SPSS and R studio.

The x elite processors have proven to be extremely powerful within optimized software, once adobe releases full arm versions and Qualcomm releases updated drivers I believe that these laptops would be more than capable of content creation

Not with that iGPU horsepower. It only gets 3.8 TFLOPS. That is competing with the M2 to M3 Air. AMD Radeon 780M gets as low as 4 TFLOPS.

@@akin242002TFLOPS is not an absolute way to measure gpu performance. The main reason these SOC’s from Apple and Qualcomm can compete in graphics is because of their access to extremely fast memory, something a 780m for example won’t have.

I concur wholeheartedly. I purchased the Lenovo Slim and was astounded by its exceptional battery life and high performance. Regrettably, I had to return the device due to compatibility issues with my Epson scanner driver and software, as well as other essential software. Consequently, I have decided to defer my purchase for a few months in anticipation of broader software and driver availability for ARM-based processors.

Fantastic video. As an early adopter myself, all this has done for me is believe the future is only going to get better for us, the consumer! Loving my Machine (Surface 7 XPlus) Great screen, fantastic battery life, great speakers etc etc.. Just needs driver updates for the GPU as it is the biggest let down of these machines for me currently.

I hope that the mediocre Adreno graphics are a result of poor driver optimization, because then it can easily be fixed through an update. Mind you, the adreno graphics actually fare very well in arm optimized benchmarks, so it could also be possible that Microsoft never prioritized delivering good graphics emulation through prism, something that could also improve with time.

This goes to show how many people probably buy a laptop that's capable of doing way more than they need it to do but sacrifice battery life and added weight. Nice that you get the good CPU performance and battery life now. My laptop needs have changed. I ended up going for the Galaxy Book 4 Edge 16 inch. I use my laptop for media consumption and social media, web browsing, emails, DMs and writing comments and articles. Love the big 3k OLED display and 10 plus hours of battery life and it runs cool enough that I can actually use it on my lap. I think the mistake that Qualcomm made was not releasing Dev Kits ahead of time to get developers to optimize their software before releasing the laptops to the consumers. That's something where Apple's shift to Apple Silicon was smart with the Mac Mini dev kits. Most software was ready out the gate or shortly there after. I hope that with the popularity of the X Plus and X Elite, video editing software and photo editing applications will be optimized soon. I couldn't get Capcut to launch, so I am looking for something else. I have been just recording and uploading from my iPhone, so I can make due with that, for the time being. Curious to see how the journey into the Windows on ARM goes and how quickly developers get on board. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Great video!

It's interesting. I have a surface pro 11. Currently, what I'm missing is arm native VLC and acrobat reader. VLC is in work but very buggy. Part of what made Windows tablet so cool was that everything worked. I'm not sure where Snapdragon fits. I also wonder if Lunar Lake will put these out of business.

  • @shaneterrell

Valid points indeed! Ultimately, it boils down to specific use cases and what consumers expect. As a professional .NET developer, I've appreciated the solid support Windows on Arm offers. Additionally, I use my computer for consuming content, browsing social media, managing finances, and playing classic games via emulators. I am completely open to forgoing compatibility for the sake of longer battery life and, most crucially, the absence of fan noise during routine tasks. However, I recognize that others may have different requirements.
While it appears that AMD's Strix Point may not meet my efficiency expectations, the potential of Intel's Lunar Lake is intriguing. Should their claims hold true, I am prepared to invest in both efficiency and compatibility.

I'm also stoked for actual good ARM chips coming to the Windows Ecosystem, and this is a great start. However, intel is showing some life in the space of thin and light + performance per watt in their upcoming Lunar Lake chips. I'm pretty impressed with how much work intel has put into the Lunar Lake architecture to compete within this space.

If things go well more software companies will start to compile their stuff for the ARM processors and you will get less emulation and even more performance. I wont be surprised if this time next year it's an afterthought.

I think the precedent that Apple set with the M1's release kind of ruined the expectations that Windows device users had for the Qualcomm Snapdragon CPUs. It's a step in the right direction and has time to mature and improve as more manufacturers provide input and applications get fine tuned to work natively with ARM. I think waiting out 1-2 more generations will be enough to recommend these devices as stable machines for any type of user. Fingers crossed

Interesting take on them being like netbooks personally I don’t agree especially with the Apple hardware because they’re some of the best computers on the market for video creation multimedia work and development work.
The iPad is more like a netbook and in fact, that’s the market being targeted on the initial release of the iPad
I’ve personally used the Intel surface pro models over the years to do commercial web and app development. You really don’t need a super high powered desktop PC to get proper work done and at the end of the day make money.
I agree with a lot of your points in the video though and it’s good for us to have differing opinions on certain aspects. There’s definitely use cases and workflows that won’t be suitable for these devices just like there are some when it comes to the Apple devices although as you pointed out the Apple , chips are more mature so the number of incompatibilities are minimal at this point.
Microsoft and QUALCOMM still have work to do in this area but they’re just getting started
Going to be very interesting to see what Intel and AMD do over the next couple of years they aren’t a million miles off battery life in devices like the surface pro, but the Intel versions can’t really compete on performance.
Surprisingly for me, battery life is very similar between the Intel and Qualcomm surface Pro in certain tasks. I get around five hours worth of development using native tools on the Pro 11 based on my testing.
Weirdly on productivity tasks like writing documents, or browsing video the Pro 11 gets way longer, once under load it’s close to the i7 Pro 9 on battery at least.
You’re very right on the ai features
