One benefit I’ve seen work well with family oriented companies is providing their kids with scholarships (kids have to apply obviously). Even a $500 or $1,000 scholarship can be huge for a kid and the parents. Especially if you’re able to offer it every semester (ie. if their parents have been with you for 5+ years, and the kids apply and earn it and maintain good grades, offer them $500 or more for every semester).
I’ve worked in and out of Fortune 500 multibillion companies that are often in those “best places to work” lists. It’s insane how much better and more ethical your approach is compared to most of these global corporations with massive HR departments.
We find that this info isn’t specific to the fence business. It is more about the contracting business in general. Thanks for watching and please share with your contractor friends!
Overtime Just out highshcool I worked in factory, they worked the paint line 10 hours 5 days a week, and 8 on Saturday and Sunday. Ran everyone ragged. They adjusted and gave them a cap of 50 hours in five days. And started to dig out the backlog within a week or two. Production went up when the workers were happier, and less tired. Always stuck with me that more accomplished with less hours put in when employees are not ran to death. I think turnover went down too.
We travel a lot and found that retention went up if we stuck to 4 days a week. They often chose to work 12+ hr days during those 4 days but were very happy to have a 3 day weekend most of the year and sleep in their own beds 4 nights a week.
Looks like you ride bikes. Great motivational exercise. What do you think about an exercise room for employees. Great talk it is a lot of little things like the inside of an ant bed.
In our business if they come with a CDL they could start at a higher rate. All of our drives are required to have a CDL because we always pull trailers. If they want to move up to foreman they must get a CDL first. It definitely gives them an advantage.
The "Gold Star" thing seems a bit childish. If I'm a grown man, working outside in the elements and doing a grown man's job, a Gold Star is kind of condescending. The extra money is great, but the "Gold Star" feels too much like grade school stuff. I've grown up in an Oilfield family and giving someone a "Gold Star" might get you an a** whoopin'. Shawn might want to rethink giving out "Gold Stars".

“If your getting the job at cheapest rate it’s called order taking not selling” 100%

Just curious what you do if they come with CDL
