If the terrain is more demanding, they can be rigged up with a pusher pull setup using two tractors fore and aft. There are also SPT trailers that do not use hydraulics but linkages to control the unit.

A fantastic machine , but driving by hydrolics seems a lot of work to construct, high pressure tanks and all that pipeing , posibility of leaks . I wonder if electric would be easier ,the powerpack would be a diesiel generator and an electric motor on each drive wheel.
Mammoet/Scheuerle are experimenting with electric SPMTs. These use an electric power unit to drive hydraulic pumps, so the SPMT itself is still hydraulic. The biggest problem is the lifting system. This has to carry the weight of the load, and be compact enough to fit between the wheels of a wheel unit. Hydraulics are an excellent solution for providing a lot of lifting power in a small package. I'm not aware of electric solutions that could fit in there.

These aren't car tires. The pressure is very high, and a failure can be lethal. And this is the first time these new tires are inflated, so that's when you find out about manufacturing defects.
Stupid Head ... these tires have 128 psi in them not 30 like a car tire. And just as a reminder; PSI stands for Pounds per Square Inch which means that every single square inch inside the tire experiences 128 pounds of pressure. That is 18,432 pounds of pressure on a 1 square foot area - I think those cages are definitely necessary.
