The fact that his parents kept going back for 14 years and knew all the employees there means that the guy who did it probably interacted with them multiple times and that's just sad...

As a Canadian, this story was on the news after they found his mummified body, and again when it was determined that he was pushed into the crevasse. His parents were heart broken. Thank you for telling this story the way you do. You are an amazing storyteller
the story was told wrong and mrballen exaggerated. the snowboard was intact and no limbs were cut off. he had cuts on the leg and snowboard. no severed arm etc. its not unlikely at all that the sharp edges inside such a slit could cause these cuts.
I grew up in Saskatoon Sk and we knew the MacPherson family. My oldest brother and Duncan were the same age and they played ball together in the 'off season'. As the little sister, I had a 'crush' on Duncan because he was always very kind to me. It was so very, very tragic and scary when Duncan went missing. Thank God Bob and Lynda finally got answers, as horrific as they are, and could bring him home and lay him to rest. It's hard to believe that we are all in our 50's now. My most vivid memories of Duncan are from a time when I went to all my brother's ball games because I was too young to stay at home alone. A time when we lived on orange soda, hotdogs and licorice from the concession stand.
For 14 years, while we were doing everything we could to find out what had happened to Duncan, we received NO cooperation from the ski operator, or from police. In fact, they were doing everything they could NOT to discover what had happened. If a search action had been initiated on 9 August when Duncan did not return the rented snowboarding equipment, there is no question he would have been found. Thank you for caring.

Empathy is held in regards to people closest to you and not random people you have no idea about. Everyone else also have their lives to live, if they tried to help but had no results then what are they supposed to do? They can't stop their life for a guy they never met and it's insanely selfish to think they should. Dude in the end should have played it safe and he didn't, it sucks it took 14 years for him to be found and the circumstances couldn't have been better but don't fault people who had nothing to do with it.
The ending to this story is so frustrating. The fact that he might have still been alive and just left to die up there, and that someone could do that to him without any conpassion is just horrible.
It sucks for both people. I don't necessarily think the people who hid his body, didn't have compassion. I just think it was a big shock to them, and fear also of getting in trouble.

I disagree, while the event sucks it would have been avoidable if Duncan used some common sense and waited for the Fog to clear. The fact he didn't do that and didn't wait for others to start back up means he put himself in danger. The thing with the machine is a freak accident, can't blame the guy for trying to do his job just to accidentally run someone over who shouldn't have been there at that point and chances are he was dead the second the thing ran him over and even if not (as the host says) the chances of him surviving that situation would have been low. You'd also have to keep in mind the laws of another country, the dude could have been jailed for murder despite it being an accident and with no witnesses he did what he thought was best (which is a crappy action but one most people would have made). If he had waited and been safe... He'd still be alive.

I was 15 when this happened, and I remember hearing about Duncan going missing on the local news and hearing over the years about how hard his parents were still trying to find him. It was huge news locally that he was missing and again when his body was found, but for some reason, I had never before known exactly how he died. I love how Mr. Ballen pauses to explain terms in simple words during a story without breaking the flow of a story. ‘They grabbed onto the tow-rope, which is a way to get to the top of the slope. There’s a cable that rotates from the top to the bottom of the mountain, and there are all these bars attached to the cable, and skiers and snowboarders grab the bar while standing on their snowboard or their skis and they literally get pulled up the mountain.’ Simple, concise, effective. And extremely helpful for a diverse audience who may never have encountered such things like Snow or Mountains (hello from Florida!)
As a hockey fan, I only knew Duncan's story as a first round bust who died in a skiing accident. Props to Mr. Ballen for giving the full details and humanizing Duncan as more than just a news story
I read up after this, far as i could see he was a bust because he kept getting injuries. Happens in all sports. Anyway, doesnt really have anything to do with what ulrimately happened here.

I hope that Duncan, somewhere and somehow, could see how dedicated and loving his parents were. To keep looking for him for so long, to travel all across Europe just to find him.
I'm 22 and live on my own but if I was to embark on an international trip, let alone a career I'd breakdown my plans and probably even share some credentials like my visas, itinerary, contact numbers of my associates/superiors, where I'd be staying, etc.., it didn't help that Duncan would plan a whole European trip and didn't even think once of informing his parents, friends or anyone. Those responsible for this crime were never caught. Actually, there were no investigations. It’s a long and difficult story to tell. My life ended that day. Why is it that the people who are paid to investigate accidents (police and prosecutors) do not do the job that they are paid to do? The European Court of Human Rights expounds about how the “right to life” is a fundamental right of all people. Yet time and time again, I read cases where a person lost their life through no fault of their own, and the case is dismissed with no investigation whatsoever, and no one is held accountable. The court dismisses so many cases that involve police and prosecutor abuse of process, obstruction, and corruption . A human rights advocate that I follow expressed article 2 (Right to Life) of the ECHR this way:, which I thought was excellent: “ The Right to Life in action is demonstrated by our strength in questioning death.” In other words, just saying we value life is not enough. If we do not do out best to investigate and explain so-called accidental deaths,, we learn nothing., and we cannot claim to be a society that “values life” when we are nit willing to investigate sudden, unexplained deaths. That snow cat driver is a psychopath, how can you leave another human being to die like that. Statute of limitations should’nt exist for such cases, absolutely horrible. Poor Duncan.
First thing I said... No statutes should exist for things like this. I def believe something was wrong with the snow cat driver for him to do that...not mentally there, personality disorder, intoxicated on the job, etc...something. That behaviour is not normal, imo. It's possible that more than one person had been involved in his death. It has been reported that Josef (the manager of the equipment rental shop) and the police all said Duncan returned his equipment even though they discovered 14 years later that he actually didn't. Additionally, Walter's (the snowboard instructor) statements over the years kept changing. Additionally, an Asian man had a fatal accident in the same crevice area that Duncan disappeared just a year prior, yet Franz Brecher (the same inspector who conducted the investigation for both cases) did not think of mentioning the similarities and simply said Duncan probably went for a hike and got into an accident. Some people speculated that there was a group effort between the ski resort and the police to coverup Duncan's death, possibly to allow them to keep the business running without trouble.

Nearly every story I've ever heard of people going missing and/or dying in wilderness type areas begins with "he/she decided to go hiking/skiing/snowboarding/walking/jogging/or... alone." Alone is the keyword here, yet again. And most of the time, the person lost never told anyone where they were going or when they'd be back. How many lost or deceased people does it take before others learn from their mistakes? NEVER go out alone. And definitely, tell someone where you went and when you'll be back. His own parents didn't even know where he was going. European tour? Europe is a HUGE continent, with thousands of touristy type destinations. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. RIP Duncan.

Actually, wasn’t it the afternoon of his first day? Either way, he should have at least checked to see if the guy was accounted for. And when he didn’t come back for his sweater, you’d think he could have lifted a finger to do something, even if only for his own peace of mind. Sad and infuriating.

This was truly a heartbreaking story. What was originally an accident ended up turning into a crime. Whether his injuries were life threatening or not, all the guy needed to do was get the poor guy some help. I couldn't imagine how his parents felt after learning what really happened to their son all those years ago. So sad.

@@onlyontfish3784 Yes, it is literally the definition of murder. Murder has multiple degrees under law. If the worker had only run over the guy and killed them, but taken the time to report it to authorities, they would be charged with vehicular manslaughter (charged, but not necessarily convicted).. However, due to the fact that they hid the body and covered everything up, the charge would be 3rd degree murder, in addition to tampering with a corpse, and any other charges they could tack on. I am no lawyer, but I don’t think you understand how the law works at all. This is 100% a murder. It just happens to be a 3rd degree murder which is less common than 1st and 2nd degree murders.
What I learned from Mr Ballen’s show: don’t ski or snowboard on a glacier, don’t hike in any mountains without a locked and loaded large caliber weapon, don’t buy a house without checking basement, attack, perimeter, and with neighbors about local legends. Don’t move to unpopulated areas even if there is a fence around the property, and always leave a full itinerary when traveling alone.
That is horrific. I feel for his parents who never stopped only to end up with such a terrible understanding of their son's last moments and no justice. And knowing how they must of talked to his killer at some point. Truly devastating.
Former Ski resort instructor here. All resorts have had written schedules of snow cat operators, and their routes, so the resort knows who what where etc. Never go skiing/riding alone RIP

But if they did, that employee 100% needs to be held accountable and it’s ridiculous that they haven’t been. I am Duncan's brother. We know the initials of the people working on the ski grooming that day as well as the supervisor and it's not difficult to know their names.
It wouldn't have been too hard to figure out who the likely drivers of the snow cat were on the day in question. Plus, we know Duncan showed bad judgment snowboarding in heave fog, but what the devil was the cat driver doing driving around in dense fog?
I wonder why the ski instructor didn't report Duncan missing. The instructor and management should have searched and scouted out the area before the ice chopper was used. I hope the ski area counts the people going up the hill, and the people coming back so this doesn't happen again.

I am also a big NHL/hockey fan and I vaguely remember it being discussed in 2003, but I was still pretty young then so I would not usually watch the pregame or intermission segments at that age so it's possible I just missed it. Very sad

Such a sad story. Im sure hearing the story doesn't make anyone scared to go visit the country. Theres bad people that do bad things in the whole world sadly. Its too bad people do crazy things to stay out of trouble.
There are two possibilities. One is that he quickly went into shock from the blood loss, and that can bring on a sense of euphoria. The other is that he suffocated to death from the snow piled on him before euphoria set in. I hope it was the former. Or that he lost consciousness within a few minutes. Either way, he did suffer pain and panic for at least a few minutes, and the driver is evil.

It happens more often than you think. Somebody abandoned a car in front of our house. The first couple of nights, I thought, Someone must be visiting a neighbor. After a week, We called parking enforcement since the car NEVER moved. Parking enforcement never came. On street sweeping days, they would just keep posting tickets. A month later (after I checked the doors--unlocked-no wallet or purse or personal effects really,, just the owners manual for the car. FINALLY after the whole neighborhood calling parking enforcement, it was towed. So, yeah, I can imagine it happens more than we think.
Absolutely heart breaking!! Things like this is another reason why the buddy system is so beneficial. I’m so heart broken for Duncan and his family. He was so young and full of life! The reason you never heard of the story is because the ski lobby in Austria has tremendous influence on the media - they don’t report “bad news” - it is not good for business. The ski operator and the ski/tourist industry pay big money to advertise with the media. If the media reports “bad news”, they risk losing bit advertising dollars. money counts more than someone’s life😢

They are tightly knit with local politicians. There was a terrible incident with 155 dead people in Kaprun, Salzburg. It is a difficult situation when the people entrusted to uncover the truth are actually the people preventing the truth from emerging! I will not give up on doing what I can to expose the cover-up. The prosecutor I am dealing with today has acknowledged “many mistakes were made” in the investigation of Duncan’s death, BUT, he told me that he “must refrain from Commenting on closed cases as he DOES NOT WISH To CRITICIZE HIS COLLEAGUES! To which I said, you are paid to investigate possible crime, NOT protect your colleagues. I am sure he hopes I will go away or die. I have no control over when I die, but quitting is not an option! Yeah, this reminds of the horrifying incidents of children being abducted, where the authorities know and basically everyone else knows that after a day or two the odds of finding that child alive are virtually nonexistent. But these parents, they won’t ever stop looking for their kids. They will stop everything and do nothing but travel to the ends of the earth and back looking for their precious babies and it’s utterly heartbreaking. This story, like those stories, really demonstrate how totally undying the love of a parent is for their child.

About a year ago i found the book "cold a long time" in a local thrift store. It's signed by duncans parents with the message "thank you for caring". The story is insane and its wild to think that something like this could happen. I had surprisingly (as a canadian) never heard of the story before reading the book and was just in shock the whole time. Its so tragic what this family had to go through but hopefully through sharing their story it will never happen again
It's in our nature to want to help someone that is in distress, or even get help when we find someone's remains. What happened was a complete accident, and no one would have been in trouble. Yet instead of taking the time to help Duncan, or even take him back down the mountain whether or not he survived, the man operating the machine chose to "solve" his own problem by getting rid of Duncan completely. In order to save himself a day or two of inconvenience, he destroyed the lives of several people and made them suffer for 14 years.
I think, he could get in big trouble, or, at least, would have lost his job. But it doesn't really matter if it's about a human's life or plain murder! An absolutely horrible creature, not even a human who could do that to a person.
My hope is that he was dead before any of that happened. Or unconscious so he didn't have to suffer at all before being terribly wronged by a fellow human, then ultimately dying. This is such a heart breaking ordeal. But, like you, I can only imagine.
There are two aspects to Duncan’s story- I) what happened on 9 August 1989; and ii) what happened when Duncan’s body was found on 18 July 2003. MrBallen told the story of what happened on 9 August 1989, but did not address the investigation of death by police, coroner, and state attorney. One might be able to halfway rationalize the operator’s motivation in concealing the body in a crevasse - they at least had some excuse - fear of prosecution and/or losing their job. There is NO rationalization of investigating officials who took active measures to prevent the truth from emerging. Their job was to investigate cause and manner of death, NOT conceal it.

Police and ski operator concealed from us, and from Canadian Search and Rescue the fact that on 4 August 1988, a young Asian skier disappeared in the same area of the slope where Duncan was last observed(and the precise location where he would be found 14 years later). On 18 July 2003, Duncan’s body, together with the rented snowboarding equipment, re-emerged in the middle of the ski slope, not far from where he had last been observed on 9 August 1989. The coroner was not notified, and police did not attend the discovery site; thus no investigation of the scene, no documentation of the evidence. Recovery of the evidence was carried out by unidentified slope workers, employed by the owner of the property on which Duncan died, who for 14 years was considered potentially liable for having caused/contributed to Duncan’s death. An autopsy was mandatory, given the suspicious circumstances surrounding Duncan’s disappearance. The prosecutor denied our request for autopsy, erroneously invoking a statute of limitations. (The statute of limitations for criminal negligence is 3 years from the time you discover what happened (cause and manner of death) It is my very strong conviction the prosecutor thwarted an autopsy, the autopsy, not only to bar prosecution, but to suppress the evidence, and prevent the truth from emerging

Your assumption is correct; however as we have learned, authorities DO NOT WANT to know what happened to Duncan - they want to protect the ski operator/tourist industry. Explaining what happened to a Canadian snowboarder is not worth upsetting the lucrative industry. The corruption in the Innsbruck judiciary is obvious to anyone that examines the details of the story.
This is one of the saddest uploads. I cant imagine the horror and helplessness that Duncan must have felt those last few hours of his life. His parents are two of the most amazing people i have ever heard about in terms of the hope and perseverance that kept them from ever giving up on finding their son. If it weren't for their actions ( and theirs alone) i doubt anyone would have been able to know Duncan's story. He would have been a missing person whos fate remained unknown like so many others. Although i am sad that Duncan and his life full of promise was taken away, i sincerely hope his parents know how much of an inspiration they are to those who have had the misfortune of a person they love going missing. To see these two people narrow down his whereabouts in a foreign country no less to the exact place he was found is an immeasurable feat. I hope Duncan's story will remain a word of caution while his parents story continues to bring hope to those who may still be trying to find their lost family member. It’s kinda hard to pin point who did it , since there are at least 2 to 3 drivers daily and after 14 years you won’t really know who drove that time of the day + I won’t believe the hotel will have records of daily activity’s of all staff after 14 years.
If that driver has a soul, hes haunted by this. If that was my loved one, I would forgive them for the accident that they couldnt have possibly foreseen, but never for covering it up and letting everyone worry and wonder for years.
This story had me speechless, as a snowboarder myself this was super relatable. One time I fell and dislocated my shoulder in a very similar low visibility situation all alone. Luckily it was a short run and I could stand up and ride the rest of the way down. It’s really terrifying to imagine breaking a leg riding all alone, and then you see someone driving up thinking you’re saved but instead get chopped up by some giant blades and thrown down some giant crevasse 😢
Much like driving off-road (which is my jam), please don't ski/snowboard alone. Even if it's a "popular" ski resort, with tons of guests and the mountain is crowded... bring at least one friend with you. Preferably more - the more the better. It's *always* dangerous, and there is safety in numbers.
Or, at the very least, tell someone where you going and what you are doing, how long you'll be. Even if it's the receptionist at the hotel or the barman. Just make sure someone knows when you aren't where you're supposed to be. RIP Duncan.
My sister fell over while skiing in low visibility conditions, luckily someone else fell over near her and she screamed loud enough that my mom found her as well because her skis hadn't come off, twisting and trapping her leg. Can't image what would of happened if it happened while she was alone

Yeah i went to iceland a few years back in about autumn i think? We went on a tour of a glacier with like snow mobil thingies idk. There were these massive crevasses that i was terrified of ending up in. I will never mess with a glacier unless i have a guide because that’s terrifying 😭 beautiful country though 10/10

As a parent of four children, I would never stop looking if one of them went missing. And if I realized that they had been murdered, I would never stop looking for the insensitive soul that did that to them. I cannot even fathom what his parents experienced.
Its a little scary that so many tragic stories end after: “just once more” or “Just a little longer” or “I’m not ready to go yet, go without me”. I wonder how many folks would not have ended up a tragic story it they had just stopped doing whatever it was they were doing and went home.
A friend of mine I used to ride BMX with was very superstitious about saying “okay let me just try this trick one more time.” People always seemed to get hurt on a last attempt. Also, I’ve noticed that some tragedies seem to happen after a harmless but unexpected change in plans.

The ski resort is also liability because one of their instructor recommend Duncan to practice after lunch & ski resort did not put up a close sign when it was foggy & they knew a racker was going to be coming down the slopes in a fog.

100% the employee did that because there was another factor. They could’ve been drunk at work, drugs, no license, ect something that had nothing to do with this incident but scared them enough they would lose their job or worse. There’s no way that person does that if everything about them was legal. They just would’ve called for help…
That's the part I immediately disagreed with in the video. I personally think I wouldn't have done what the driver did, but "wouldn't have been in trouble" is definitely a stretch. I'm sure being mutilated and amputated at the very least knocked him unconscious, and might have killed him. Imagine being that driver. Almost certainly thinks he just accidentally killed a guy. There is definitely such thing as negligent homicide, or other charges for accidentally killing someone. Absolutely doesn't excuse hiding the evidence, but it makes a lot of sense especially in such a heightened emotional state to be terrified of the consequences for killing someone, even on accident.

I actually got chills from this from how insanely close this is to something that happened to me. Last Febraury, I decided to go snowboarding at Ragged Mountain in NH. I don't have any friends who snowboard, so I was alone. The big difference though, is that I am very experienced and I had been competing for three years. I was bombing a hill that was also completely vacant, until I caught an edge, and face planted into the snow, and slid a good ten feet on my face. I was seeing black and white for a minute, but was still somehow fine, and I still have no idea how I am, but this makes it even more scary to me.
The growth of this channel is unbelievable, and even better is the fact that it’s the exact same as it was when I first started watching a year or so ago. Keep up the amazing work, Mr. Ballen!

I grew up in Saskatoon Sk and we knew the MacPherson family. My oldest brother and Duncan were the same age and they played ball together in the 'off season'. As the little sister, I had a 'crush' on Duncan because he was always very kind to me.
It was so very, very tragic and scary when Duncan went missing. Thank God Bob and Lynda finally got answers, as horrific as they are, and could bring him home and lay him to rest.
It's hard to believe that we are all in our 50's now. My most vivid memories of Duncan are from a time when I went to all my brother's ball games because I was too young to stay at home alone. A time when we lived on orange soda, hotdogs and licorice from the concession stand.

For 14 years, while we were doing everything we could to find out what had happened to Duncan, we received NO cooperation from the ski operator, or from police. In fact, they were doing everything they could NOT to discover what had happened. If a search action had been initiated on 9 August when Duncan did not return the rented snowboarding equipment, there is no question he would have been found.

The ending to this story is so frustrating. The fact that he might have still been alive and just left to die up there, and that someone could do that to him without any conpassion is just horrible.

I disagree, while the event sucks it would have been avoidable if Duncan used some common sense and waited for the Fog to clear. The fact he didn't do that and didn't wait for others to start back up means he put himself in danger. The thing with the machine is a freak accident, can't blame the guy for trying to do his job just to accidentally run someone over who shouldn't have been there at that point and chances are he was dead the second the thing ran him over and even if not (as the host says) the chances of him surviving that situation would have been low. You'd also have to keep in mind the laws of another country, the dude could have been jailed for murder despite it being an accident and with no witnesses he did what he thought was best (which is a crappy action but one most people would have made). If he had waited and been safe... He'd still be alive.

I was 15 when this happened, and I remember hearing about Duncan going missing on the local news and hearing over the years about how hard his parents were still trying to find him. It was huge news locally that he was missing and again when his body was found, but for some reason, I had never before known exactly how he died. I am so infuriated and heartbroken for him and his parents. Thanks for finishing the story for me.

I love how Mr. Ballen pauses to explain terms in simple words during a story without breaking the flow of a story. ‘They grabbed onto the tow-rope, which is a way to get to the top of the slope. There’s a cable that rotates from the top to the bottom of the mountain, and there are all these bars attached to the cable, and skiers and snowboarders grab the bar while standing on their snowboard or their skis and they literally get pulled up the mountain.’
Simple, concise, effective. And extremely helpful for a diverse audience who may never have encountered such things like Snow or Mountains (hello from Florida!)
As a hockey fan, I only knew Duncan's story as a first round bust who died in a skiing accident. Props to Mr. Ballen for giving the full details and humanizing Duncan as more than just a news story

Why is it that the people who are paid to investigate accidents (police and prosecutors) do not do the job that they are paid to do? The European Court of Human Rights expounds about how the “right to life” is a fundamental right of all people. Yet time and time again, I read cases where a person lost their life through no fault of their own, and the case is dismissed with no investigation whatsoever, and no one is held accountable. The court dismisses so many cases that involve police and prosecutor abuse of process, obstruction, and corruption . A human rights advocate that I follow expressed article 2 (Right to Life) of the ECHR this way:, which I thought was excellent:
“ The Right to Life in action is demonstrated by our strength in questioning death.”
In other words, just saying we value life is not enough. If we do not do out best to investigate and explain so-called accidental deaths,, we learn nothing., and we cannot claim to be a society that “values life” when we are nit willing to investigate sudden, unexplained deaths.

I def believe something was wrong with the snow cat driver for him to do that...not mentally there, personality disorder, intoxicated on the job, etc...something. That behaviour is not normal, imo. It's possible that more than one person had been involved in his death. It has been reported that Josef (the manager of the equipment rental shop) and the police all said Duncan returned his equipment even though they discovered 14 years later that he actually didn't. Additionally, Walter's (the snowboard instructor) statements over the years kept changing.
Additionally, an Asian man had a fatal accident in the same crevice area that Duncan disappeared just a year prior, yet Franz Brecher (the same inspector who conducted the investigation for both cases) did not think of mentioning the similarities and simply said Duncan probably went for a hike and got into an accident.
Some people speculated that there was a group effort between the ski resort and the police to coverup Duncan's death, possibly to allow them to keep the business running without trouble.

Duncan was a very close neighbour, he and his family were friends of me and my family. Those 14 years were absolutely soul crushing. I never knew about the devastating events until now. Nearly every story I've ever heard of people going missing and/or dying in wilderness type areas begins with "he/she decided to go hiking/skiing/snowboarding/walking/jogging/or... alone." Alone is the keyword here, yet again. And most of the time, the person lost never told anyone where they were going or when they'd be back. How many lost or deceased people does it take before others learn from their mistakes? NEVER go out alone. And definitely, tell someone where you went and when you'll be back. His own parents didn't even know where he was going. European tour? Europe is a HUGE continent, with thousands of touristy type destinations. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. RIP Duncan.

That's the first thing that came to my mind thinking about who may have driven over the guy, gotten out, inspected the scene, tossed the poor guy into the abyss and then repeatedly drove over the hole again.
This is immeasurably horrible. They have to know who did it! They know who worked there. The PARENTS probably met the person!!! And they played stupid for years knowing they likely murdered someone. They have to live with that now. RIP poor Duncan. I wish his family peace and healing.

Actually, wasn’t it the afternoon of his first day? Either way, he should have at least checked to see if the guy was accounted for. And when he didn’t come back for his sweater, you’d think he could have lifted a finger to do something, even if only for his own peace of mind. Sad and infuriating.

If the worker had only run over the guy and killed them, but taken the time to report it to authorities, they would be charged with vehicular manslaughter (charged, but not necessarily convicted).. However, due to the fact that they hid the body and covered everything up, the charge would be 3rd degree murder, in addition to tampering with a corpse, and any other charges they could tack on. I am no lawyer, but I don’t think you understand how the law works at all. This is 100% a murder. It just happens to be a 3rd degree murder which is less common than 1st and 2nd degree murders.

What I learned from Mr Ballen’s show: don’t ski or snowboard on a glacier, don’t hike in any mountains without a locked and loaded large caliber weapon, don’t buy a house without checking basement, attack, perimeter, and with neighbors about local legends. Don’t move to unpopulated areas even if there is a fence around the property, and always leave a full itinerary when traveling alone.

That is horrific. I feel for his parents who never stopped only to end up with such a terrible understanding of their son's last moments and no justice. And knowing how they must of talked to his killer at some point. Truly devastating.

All resorts have had written schedules of snow cat operators, and their routes, so the resort knows who what where etc.

I am Duncan's brother. We know the initials of the people working on the ski grooming that day as well as the supervisor and it's not difficult to know their names.

I wonder why the ski instructor didn't report Duncan missing. The instructor and management should have searched and scouted out the area before the ice chopper was used. I hope the ski area counts the people going up the hill, and the people coming back so this doesn't happen again.

There are two possibilities. One is that he quickly went into shock from the blood loss, and that can bring on a sense of euphoria. The other is that he suffocated to death from the snow piled on him before euphoria set in. I hope it was the former. Or that he lost consciousness within a few minutes. Either way, he did suffer pain and panic for at least a few minutes, and the driver is evil.

It happens more often than you think. Somebody abandoned a car in front of our house. The first couple of nights, I thought, Someone must be visiting a neighbor. After a week, We called parking enforcement since the car NEVER moved. Parking enforcement never came. On street sweeping days, they would just keep posting tickets. A month later (after I checked the doors--unlocked-no wallet or purse or personal effects really,, just the owners manual for the car. FINALLY after the whole neighborhood calling parking enforcement, it was towed. So, yeah, I can imagine it happens more than we think.
Absolutely heart breaking!! Things like this is another reason why the buddy system is so beneficial. I’m so heart broken for Duncan and his family. He was so young and full of life! He had so much left to accomplish in his life. Sending all my best wishes for healing to his family and friends. Duncan deserved more than this dreadful end. 💔

The reason you never heard of the story is because the ski lobby in Austria has tremendous influence on the media - they don’t report “bad news” - it is not good for business. The ski operator and the ski/tourist industry pay big money to advertise with the media. If the media reports “bad news”, they risk losing bit advertising dollars. money counts more than someone’s life😢

They are tightly knit with local politicians. There was a terrible incident with 155 dead people in Kaprun, Salzburg. The verdicts where more than just a shame for our whole country and everything looked like a huge cover up: "No mistakes where made, just a tragic accident."

Yeah, this reminds of the horrifying incidents of children being abducted, where the authorities know and basically everyone else knows that after a day or two the odds of finding that child alive are virtually nonexistent. But these parents, they won’t ever stop looking for their kids. They will stop everything and do nothing but travel to the ends of the earth and back looking for their precious babies and it’s utterly heartbreaking. This story, like those stories, really demonstrate how totally undying the love of a parent is for their child.

About a year ago i found the book "cold a long time" in a local thrift store. It's signed by duncans parents with the message "thank you for caring". The story is insane and its wild to think that something like this could happen. I had surprisingly (as a canadian) never heard of the story before reading the book and was just in shock the whole time. Its so tragic what this family had to go through but hopefully through sharing their story it will never happen again
It's in our nature to want to help someone that is in distress, or even get help when we find someone's remains. What happened was a complete accident, and no one would have been in trouble. Yet instead of taking the time to help Duncan, or even take him back down the mountain whether or not he survived, the man operating the machine chose to "solve" his own problem by getting rid of Duncan completely. In order to save himself a day or two of inconvenience, he destroyed the lives of several people and made them suffer for 14 years.
I think, he could get in big trouble, or, at least, would have lost his job. But it doesn't really matter if it's about a human's life or plain murder! An absolutely horrible creature, not even a human who could do that to a person.

My hope is that he was dead before any of that happened. Or unconscious so he didn't have to suffer at all before being terribly wronged by a fellow human, then ultimately dying. This is such a heart breaking ordeal. But, like you, I can only imagine.
There are two aspects to Duncan’s story- I) what happened on 9 August 1989; and ii) what happened when Duncan’s body was found on 18 July 2003. MrBallen told the story of what happened on 9 August 1989, but did not address the investigation of death by police, coroner, and state attorney. One might be able to halfway rationalize the operator’s motivation in concealing the body in a crevasse - they at least had some excuse - fear of prosecution and/or losing their job. There is NO rationalization of investigating officials who took active measures to prevent the truth from emerging. Their job was to investigate cause and manner of death, NOT conceal it.
I really wish Mr Ballen would've went more into that. Do you know how police were trying to conceal the truth? I'm very sorry you had to go through all of this.

Circumstances surrounding Duncan’s disappearance from the ski slope on 9 August 1989 were undeniably suspicious, raising questions of third-party liability, and possible cover up of a fatal accident. Police and ski operator concealed from us, and from Canadian Search and Rescue the fact that on 4 August 1988, a young Asian skier disappeared in the same area of the slope where Duncan was last observed(and the precise location where he would be found 14 years later).
On 18 July 2003, Duncan’s body, together with the rented snowboarding equipment, re-emerged in the middle of the ski slope, not far from where he had last been observed on 9 August 1989. The coroner was not notified, and police did not attend the discovery site; thus no investigation of the scene, no documentation of the evidence. Recovery of the evidence was carried out by unidentified slope workers, employed by the owner of the property on which Duncan died, who for 14 years was considered potentially liable for having caused/contributed to Duncan’s death.
An autopsy was mandatory, given the suspicious circumstances surrounding Duncan’s disappearance. The prosecutor denied our request for autopsy, erroneously invoking a statute of limitations. (The statute of limitations for criminal negligence is 3 years from the time you discover what happened (cause and manner of death) It is my very strong conviction the prosecutor thwarted an autopsy, the autopsy, not only to bar prosecution, but to suppress the evidence, and prevent the truth from emerging

Thanks for your input. Your assumption is correct; however as we have learned, authorities DO NOT WANT to know what happened to Duncan - they want to protect the ski operator/tourist industry. Explaining what happened to a Canadian snowboarder is not worth upsetting the lucrative industry. The corruption in the Innsbruck judiciary is obvious to anyone that examines the details of the story.
This is one of the saddest uploads. I cant imagine the horror and helplessness that Duncan must have felt those last few hours of his life. His parents are two of the most amazing people i have ever heard about in terms of the hope and perseverance that kept them from ever giving up on finding their son. If it weren't for their actions ( and theirs alone) i doubt anyone would have been able to know Duncan's story. He would have been a missing person whos fate remained unknown like so many others.
Although i am sad that Duncan and his life full of promise was taken away, i sincerely hope his parents know how much of an inspiration they are to those who have had the misfortune of a person they love going missing. To see these two people narrow down his whereabouts in a foreign country no less to the exact place he was found is an immeasurable feat. I hope Duncan's story will remain a word of caution while his parents story continues to bring hope to those who may still be trying to find their lost family member. That snow cat driver is a monster. Even if they can’t charge them, they should let everyone know who did it so they can be publicly shamed.
It’s kinda hard to pin point who did it , since there are at least 2 to 3 drivers daily and after 14 years you won’t really know who drove that time of the day + I won’t believe the hotel will have records of daily activity’s of all staff after 14 years.
That guy will definitely be haunted by this for the rest of his life. Especially if Duncan was alive and moaning at the time
If that driver has a soul, hes haunted by this. If that was my loved one, I would forgive them for the accident that they couldnt have possibly foreseen, but never for covering it up and letting everyone worry and wonder for years.

This story had me speechless, as a snowboarder myself this was super relatable. One time I fell and dislocated my shoulder in a very similar low visibility situation all alone. Luckily it was a short run and I could stand up and ride the rest of the way down. It’s really terrifying to imagine breaking a leg riding all alone, and then you see someone driving up thinking you’re saved but instead get chopped up by some giant blades and thrown down some giant crevasse 😢
Much like driving off-road (which is my jam), please don't ski/snowboard alone. Even if it's a "popular" ski resort, with tons of guests and the mountain is crowded... bring at least one friend with you. Preferably more - the more the better. It's *always* dangerous, and there is safety in numbers.
Or, at the very least, tell someone where you going and what you are doing, how long you'll be. Even if it's the receptionist at the hotel or the barman. Just make sure someone knows when you aren't where you're supposed to be. RIP Duncan.
My sister fell over while skiing in low visibility conditions, luckily someone else fell over near her and she screamed loud enough that my mom found her as well because her skis hadn't come off, twisting and trapping her leg. Can't image what would of happened if it happened while she was alone

I live in Iceland and we have lots of glaciers, even the biggest glacier in Europe and many visitors dont realize that the summer time is much more dangerous than the wintertime because of the crevasses opening up more because of the warmth. Also add the snow covering them and you got a hidden death trap. 15 years ago I worked at a gas station and my boss died when his snowmobile fell into a huge crevasse bless him.
Yeah i went to iceland a few years back in about autumn i think? We went on a tour of a glacier with like snow mobil thingies idk. There were these massive crevasses that i was terrified of ending up in. I will never mess with a glacier unless i have a guide because that’s terrifying 😭 beautiful country though 10/10

"If I try to save this badly injured man, I might get in some trouble for having accidentally injured him, so I'll just chuck him down a crevasse, mutilated & bleeding out, & bury him alive under chopped ice & hope no one ever finds him." Accidentally hurting someone & deciding that the thing to do is to bury them alive & pretend it never happened is antisocial, pathological behaviour, not mere cowardice. I'd bet anything that the person has been responsible for at least a few other deaths, considering where they work & their apparent way of responding in a crisis. Statutory limitations for homicide? I usually find it difficult follow American accent but i do always understand each and every word Mr. Ballen speaks. Kudos for being such a good story teller.
What’s really horrifying is that the killer’s judgment to just toss him to not be found really ended up keeping them from being held accountable. Like they were essentially “rewarded” for letting him die. That really hurts 😔 sad story all around 💔

Such a heartbreaking story. It’s crazy to think that “snow cat driver” is probably still alive and well, as much as you can understand how one would panic, too bad the driver didn’t just tell authorities right when the accident happened.
It’s amazing how they panicked over something that was just an accident but we’re able to live the next 14yrs NOT in a panic that they’d get caught….every time I saw a cop, I’d think “this is it, im busted”….if this person was paranoid that they’d get in trouble over an accident I can’t imagine he lived a very peaceful life thereafter

Alive and well? That guy will definitely have horrible guilt living with him for the rest of his life. He may have done something horrible out of panic, but that doesn’t mean he feels okay about it.
As a parent of four children, I would never stop looking if one of them went missing. And if I realized that they had been murdered, I would never stop looking for the insensitive soul that did that to them. I cannot even fathom what his parents experienced.

Its a little scary that so many tragic stories end after: “just once more” or “Just a little longer” or “I’m not ready to go yet, go without me”. I wonder how many folks would not have ended up a tragic story it they had just stopped doing whatever it was they were doing and went home.
Or how many times we've said "ok it's time to call it a day" and without knowing it, we avoided disaster...
A friend of mine I used to ride BMX with was very superstitious about saying “okay let me just try this trick one more time.” People always seemed to get hurt on a last attempt. Also, I’ve noticed that some tragedies seem to happen after a harmless but unexpected change in plans.

This story is so sad! And, you were right, I saw that first twist coming from almost the beginning. I’ve lived by Mt Rainier in WA state my whole life and I know how dangerous crevasses can be but I NEVER expected that second twist!
I feel so terribly for the loving parents, can’t imagine how you would cope learning the demise of your son this way and the heartless behavior of the staff’s involvement and cover-up of his death. And zero accountability? Beyond appalling! I am never skiing or snowboarding on a glacier, thanks Mr. Ballen!

The ski resort is also liability because one of their instructor recommend Duncan to practice after lunch & ski resort did not put up a close sign when it was foggy & they knew a racker was going to be coming down the slopes in a fog.

I honestly cannot believe someone did that to him for one, because it was just an accident and they wouldn't have been in trouble. For two, for that person to keep a secret like that forever is just incredible.
I mean they prolly thought no one would believe them as there was no proof of an accident. Just a mutilated body and a driver, but I don’t condone their actions neither. Terrible way to go out.

100% the employee did that because there was another factor. They could’ve been drunk at work, drugs, no license, ect something that had nothing to do with this incident but scared them enough they would lose their job or worse. There’s no way that person does that if everything about them was legal. They just would’ve called for help…
That's the part I immediately disagreed with in the video. I personally think I wouldn't have done what the driver did, but "wouldn't have been in trouble" is definitely a stretch. I'm sure being mutilated and amputated at the very least knocked him unconscious, and might have killed him. Imagine being that driver. Almost certainly thinks he just accidentally killed a guy. There is definitely such thing as negligent homicide, or other charges for accidentally killing someone. Absolutely doesn't excuse hiding the evidence, but it makes a lot of sense especially in such a heightened emotional state to be terrified of the consequences for killing someone, even on accident.
This story broke my heart. His poor parents!! I also can’t stop thinking about what happened to him and if he was alive and suffering before dying all alone.
Or if he was aware of the driver preparing to bury him alive.

I actually got chills from this from how insanely close this is to something that happened to me. Last Febraury, I decided to go snowboarding at Ragged Mountain in NH. I don't have any friends who snowboard, so I was alone. The big difference though, is that I am very experienced and I had been competing for three years. I was bombing a hill that was also completely vacant, until I caught an edge, and face planted into the snow, and slid a good ten feet on my face. I was seeing black and white for a minute, but was still somehow fine, and I still have no idea how I am, but this makes it even more scary to me.
He is definitely one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He really knows how to draw you in
