    I started when I was 50 and became debt free by 60 and still building.

    I love your authenticity. I got started late in the game with retirement as well. I just wanted to get past living paycheck to paycheck in my 20s. When we know better we do better, and so I learned and disciplined myself. I still know people who think they will always have a car payment, rolling equity into new loans. I keep telling them about your channel😂😁

    This is our concern because we really did not start until we were in our 40's as well. We bought our home consumer debt free. We felt like we made it so we ended up going back into debt. We do have an Emergency Fund. Now we are getting rid of the car notes. We regret doing that but we are working on those. But our origional concern was making sure we could eat, afford rent, and gas. We cashed out retirements in the beginning. Even with the debt on the cars we have a positive networth now. When we bought the house we made sure we could afford it and even made the bank lower the amount of the approval. But this is the first time we have a positive networth. 42 and 43 years old.

      Knowing better gives us the opportunity to do better...one of the things I play with is a Compound Interest calculator...play with that and see how adding an extra this or that every month looks. You'll find that over the next 23 years, you have time to put enough away to retire comfortably. Another plus is there are 2 of you making it potentially more income to invest :-)

    Very inspiring. I'm 39 and we'll have to start over with 401k and paying off debt so hearing your story gives me so much hope. ❤

      You cashed out yours? I had definitely cashed out mine.

    Great video. I did start that 3% 401K when I started working. I always thought that was good, until I found Dave. I use to get out of debt all the time. I would just get back in, because I thought I had to. Everyone has a car payment, a credit card. But I realized you don’t have to.

    • @FunandBudget
      @FunandBudget  6 місяців тому +1

      Exactly...I was under the same school of thought of you will always have a car payment and a mortgage.

    Content for that property made you so much money. That tenant gave you a blessing in disguise once you got over the initial shock.

      And I totally to forgot to talk about the part when I did the thing they said to NEVER do...cashed out my entire 401K - paid the penalty for doing it - to use the money to put down on this house...lol.

    I completely enjoyed this conversation. If I could do it again I would absolutely put money into a Roth IRA from the time of my first job! We would be even further along for sure. However now that we know better we are teaching our children so it's all a win🥰

      Tinesha, this was really good! I was just telling my younger cousin don't get caught up in the home approval amount focus on what you can afford. Years before I purchased my first home, this older gentlemen said the same. He also added if you're married think about being able to carry the mortgage if your partner or you suddenly didn't have income.
      That stuck with me. Yes, it's how you manage that debt! Whew, talk about what the flesh desires!

    Hello...I believe you are in IT and work for the Federal government? I am also in my forties and in IT. I work for government but not local. Do you have any videos on the subject/topic. Especially when talking about retiring early. I know that can most likely happen when you have a high or higher income. TIA

    • @FunandBudget
      @FunandBudget  6 місяців тому +3

      No I don't. Heres the thing there are a lot of high income earners with equal amounts of high debt to prove it. Its not about the income you make but the habits you build no matter the income. Now let me google federal government.

    She there any plan to leave anything to your son. Can you do a video on generational wealth

    • @FunandBudget
      @FunandBudget  6 місяців тому +3

      Believe it or not...I don't believe in "generational wealth." I think its another gimmick of straws America tries to brainwash us into reaching for and feeling bad about when we are not on the imaginary path of achieving it. To build generational wealth we would need Oprah or Steve Harvey type money. Most of us are struggling with retirement money nevermind anything else. So because we are not moguls with a half a dozen successful businesses and partnerships under our belts, the best we can do is make it so that our kids do not have to spend their financial resources taking care of us in our elderly years and if there's anything left over after that...great, that's what they'll get.
