The velvet looking ant is actually a wingless wasp. If you look up the phrase cow killer, it will show them

That cute little "furry beetle" you are so eager to pet is actually a velvet ant. They are a family of wingless female wasps (males have wings) which will aggressively sting you if you even try to touch it. Their stings will most likely be several times worse than the most painful wasp sting you've ever experienced in your life and unlike bees, the same individual will sting you numerous times over. Beware!

For those of you curious about why they are called velvet ants, firstly, they look like giant ants covered in velvet (pretty obvious) and secondly, all ants evolved from wasps and many ant species still have powerful stings.

"Black widow spiders are native to North America, where they are part of two closely related species: the western black widow and the southern black widow. They are also found in temperate regions around the world, including Southern Europe and Asia, Australia, Africa, and much of South America. In the United States, black widows are primarily found in the South and West, and are especially common in Florida and Texas."

I got bit by a brown recluse on my arm back in November. At first, it looked like any other bug bite. Then as it spread, it formed a 2 inch circular scab. Then it just kept getting infected over and over, even with Neosporin. Still to this day, part of the original bite is still scabbed and you can easily see the difference between normal skin and scar tissue. Not life threatening, but still would not recommend.

There used to be a black widow that lived on my back porch that built its web right against one of my windows. I wasn’t scared. I would go check her out every day to see if she was still there.

That furry red and black insect is a cow ant which is a ground wasp. It's basically a hornet without wings and you definitely don't want to get stung by it.

I remember hearing one case of a fatal brown recluse bite where the toxin entered a young girl’s bloodstream and basically caused her red blood cells to explode. Despite constant transfusions and dialysis, the doctors couldn’t keep up and save her. 😢

I think that bird-eating spider you were thinking of is the Goliath Birdeater Tarantula (has venom by the way, most spiders do) which lives in South America, although to be fair I guess you might have also been thinking of the Funnel-Web Spider since it is also quite big and I would not put it past them to be capable of catching a bird.
I guess on that note I'll recommend a video from Paleo Analysis called "Why Australia was SO MUCH SCARIER in the Past! (2 NEW SPECIES!)" which mentions the funnel-web spider for a bit.

I’m terrified of spiders but I actively watch his channel. It’s worth it! I went from not being able to look at spiders to being able to watch them and look at pictures of them. I’m now ok with being in a room with a tarantula as long as it’s not darty and quick (not all are). I will never be totally ok with them, but learning more about them has helped some. Plus they are fascinating! Some spiders are even trainable hahaha

We had a lot of black widows in the house I grew up in. I'm arachnophobic, but they're scary no matter what. We also had rattlesnakes in the area. I learned very young you never put your hand in a hole or under a bush without looking, never put on shoes without shaking them out, stuff like that.

We have a large population of Brown Recluse spiders in Kentucky. Their venom kills skin cells and people have lost arms, hands, feet and legs to the venom that has eaten their skin off. They scare the shit out of me.

That's right! My sister-in-law has a hole in her leg the size of a potato because of that spider. Her skin turned black, and they had to cut it out. I had one in my bed that I had dismembered from rolling on it all night. Fortunately, I wasn't bitten.

Brown recluses are the ones you want to kill on the spot and they love your house and every cournor of your land. Any widow spider is no joke. Black widow is no joke with kids and elderly or immune compromised. Had a nabour that got bit by a Brown recluse had to have a good chunk of the mustle in his arm removed after a bit, from doing some cleaning his yard. I have taught my kids to identify these spiders and to stay away. And the good ones to leave alone. That scorpion my brother got stung by it, he was in horrible pain for days, never seen anything like it, he was writhing in pain, he was 11 at the time. He is a heart murmur now. That was decades ago when he got bit.

I got tagged multiple times by brown recluse spiders while I was mowing about 15 years ago. Two bites on the right wrist, four on the right elbow, one on the left arm, and one on the left elbow. Took a bunch of benadryl and made sure to clean the bite area daily because I was afraid the bites were going to damage my right elbow joint. Ended up with divots about the size of a dime and one to two dimes deep, or about 10-12mm in diameter and 1-2mm deep. Took about a month for them to fill back in, and I lost a little surface feeling on the interior of my right elbow where those four bites were, but otherwise no worse for wear. I will say that the bites didn't hurt initially, just a little itchy, but it turned into glowing hot needles for 2 or 3 days. Probably the nerve endings being scorched by cytotoxin. Would not recommend.

  • @TOM-C.

FYI, Black Widows are native to N. America. The similar Red Back Widow is native to Australia. Australia however has a much more dangerous spider called the Funnel Web Spider which can kill a human in as little as 15 minutes, and they are aggressive! That alone is enough to curtail any thought of moving there I might have had. Black Widows are everywhere in S. California! I've had them at every single house I have ever lived in which equates to about 10. The False Widow I've seen also in one property. They are brown, but can be black, and look like a widow, but don't have the telltale red hourglass on their abdomen so are easy to identify.👍😎✌🗽

Brown Recluses are the ones to watch out for and kill on sight. I have a bad black scar on my leg from one. Black Widows are really reluctant to bite people. If you rough-house them, like children are like to do, then yeah prepare to be bitten. But, while scary looking, I've held many black widows, sometimes accidently from picking things up lol, but they've always been calm creatures.

My dad nearly lost his hand because of a brown recluse bite. You can still see the divot left after a lot of medical intervention.
I got bite by something while doing yard work. Not sure what but it ate away at my upper leg, just where my shorts ended(i think something got on my leg, I moved, it felt squished so it bit). I had to do quite a few things to get it well. Took months to fully heal it.
Ive killed black widows that lived in my dogs dog house. I tend to leave spiders alone. They do good work. BUT I didnt want a whole nest of them living where she could squish them and get bitten.
My favorite spider is the wolf spider, tho. I have several that hang around my house and Im happy to see them. They eat pests. Between them, the bats, and the opposums, its like having a permanant pest control service living here.

I lived on a small lake in East Texas. There I was bitten by a tarantula when I was burning brush in a burn pile. All that happened was I got a swelled spot with two puncture holes and it went away in a few days. If you handle one, they rarely bite and be careful because they are quite fragile. I was bitten by a brown recluse that caused a divot in my ankle, but soaking it in Tide water and putting some salve on it, it went away in a few weeks. I've gotten into a dozen fire ant mounds. That stings, but a squirt of WD40 and the pain went away in seconds. I was mowing down by the lake and mowed over a sprinkler head. Replacing it, I took up a chunk of sod, replaced it and whey I grabbed the sod, I also had a water moccasin in my hand. It didn't bite and when I gently put it down, it disappeared into the grass. I've accidently stepped on an alligator's tail when she was sunning down by the water. I was looking through the lens of a camera and didn't know I had gotten so close. I actually felt guilty that I scared her so badly. One day my wife used a hoe to kill about 40 young copperheads around the base of a couple trees. My neighbor, a doctor who grew up as a hillbilly mowed his yard barefooted. He get bit by copperheads at least once a year. All he ever got was a tetanus shot. There was a 3' high cement block retaining wall by my driveway. I'd sit on. One day a large black widow climbed out then went back in. Another day I saw two smaller ones there so I just poured a little gas in there and lit it. No more spiders. The dangerous animal in Texas is wild hogs...they aim to kill ya. Rattle snake bites might cause the loss of a leg, but isn't usually fatal. The most potent poison in the world is found in daddy longlegs, but they have so little of it, it couldn't hurt ya. Also, their mouths are designed to bite legs of insects and isn't big enough to bite skin. No scorpions in East Texas, but in the dry parts, they can cause a great deal of pain except if you are Trinity in the movies. He just itched the sting...yep, Terrance Hill was great.

I had to work with several hundred cinder blocks being used to prop stuff up. Almost every hole in the blocks had a black widow inside. I took care not to hurt them and because they aren't aggressive I wasn't attacked.
My worst time with spiders was one year when I guess a large fishing spider(?) hatched eggs indoors. There is something about the way they look and their ability to to run really fast that freaked me out. I'watching Netflix, and plop, huge spider fallen on my chest or face. The real topper though was when I opened my eyes one morning and there was a freakishly huge one on the wall about 6" from my nose. Including legs it was almost as big as my hand with fingers splayed out.
The cute ant-like thing is sometimes called a cow killer or velvet ant but I think it is a type of wasp that is supposed to have an unusually painful sting. I have seen many but haven't been stung.
I wouldn't be shocked if Australia has spiders that bait their webs with saltwater crocodiles or people. I would want to go there if I weren't such a freaking chicken.

Also, I was stung by a bark scorpion which was very painful & had reoccurring pain ( Electric Shock feeling) in the bite area for about 6 months. I have tons of Black Widows around my house. I was at camp and at mission site in a field there were wolf spiders and black widow spiders I saw 2 wolf spiders and 1 black widow spiders unfortunately one of the wolf spiders I saw and another black widow spider that I did not see were killed like that is where they live they do not even bite unless you are bothering them or trying to kill them the black widow spider was killed because it was in the way and they did not want the spider biting anyone literally just leave it alone and go work somewhere else because you can always come back the very next day to work at that spot and when my grandmother was a teacher and living in North Carolina at the time she got bit by a brown recluse spider and she said there was a hole in her body and it smelled bad and she did not even feel it crawl up her and the doctor immediately knew it was a spider bite specifically a brown recluse spider bite but luckily she survived
