3800 Series 2 beyond Ignition Module issue

- Cylinder 4 misfire issue. - NOT ignition control module
TRIED:
swapping a working coil - issue persist
Replaced ignition module - issue persist
Test old and new modules - tested good
If the first coil at the front don't fire on both, switch coils and retest. If it now fires, it's the module. Retest the coils after replacing the module. Maybe replace the coil because it may have damaged the module. Use silicone grease on the module. Get plenty of grease.
What the heck are you talking about
Thank you for demonstrating this simple, easy test.
Just saw this and not sure if you still have the car but a common fail point on these is the actual harness itself that runs from the ICM to the Cam and Crank sensors. When they do fail it's usually at or in the connector itself that goes to the ICM. Doorman makes a good one Dorman 645-688 Cam, Crank And Ignition Harness Compatible with Select Models. Original problem: eating ICM's. Looked at the ICM connector and had a pin that wouldn't lock, I could pull the wire in and out easily. Common failure on these now “older” cars and engine is a failing ignition control module harness at the front of the ignition control module / coil packs.
If you try the “wiggle test” and notice issues on your engine this may, or may not, solve it.
For me it was the cure.
Yes, you could go buy this from a junkyard however, it would be a pain one to pull this from a junkyard as the wires are nestled in some tight corners.
Also, in the process of pulling the harness you may just break the part you need or some other wires... so weigh those options when considering if you want to pull a suspect part from the junkyard.
I weighed the options and decided I wanted a known good harness.
Good to know. Mine "looks" pristine, and I can duplicate the issue by tapping very lightly on the module from either below or above, idle quality becomes poor & stalls, so I think my ICM is definitely bad....but I'll inspect the connector very carefully, maybe just price a new harness.
This info helps me a lot, I need a new harness for the ignition module, was thinking in getting one from three jy. But a new one would be much better. Thanks
You're a genius! I appreciate little tricks like that.
I re-did the cylinders and the control module and it still has a rough shaking idle. The Buick dealership saying it COULD be the rear case valve! The said it could be build up… the dealership is killing me 😭😂
You could have a bad spark plug. Pull the indicated plug and see if it has burn mark or visible crack in porcelain. The plug boots will hide the shorting spark. I usually go to junk yard and get another control module with coils ($35-45 for all) as control module alone is $120+.
I have the same problem, first it was on coil 1,4...i bought a new ignition control module and now it jumped to coil 2,5... I did the switch test On the coils.. The Coils were good.. The thing I seen on my obd scanner was that when the misfire occurred, my spark advance went down to 12 degrees at a speed of 39 mph.. So that was kinda weird since at idle my advance was 20...and when driving it went up to 30...but as soon as the misfire occurred it dropped to 12... I've tried everything... The only thing I'm thinking it could be is a failing crankshaft sensor that can't keep up with the engine.. Because in my pontiac grand prix.. I'm 100% sure it's a ignition system problem... Because it's giving a weak spark.. Just can't put my finger on it...
I suggest getting a used one to see first before buying new, 50 bucks used, 136 new!
Y I always swapped around when I tested to know if it was the ice n if thts bad you also change the cups because when either goes the other will take the other with it shortly after
Fixed mine, changed Electronic Spark Control under coil pack!
M Parsons are you talking about the ignition co trol module underneath? Having the same issue on 3 and 6 (top coil)
"Ignition Control Module"
@@KJackskii hey did you ever find out what was the issue I have the same problem on mine 3/6 don't have any spark coming out of them and I'm thinking it's just the spark plugs
@@godmusicandspirit that's what it was brotha. It's the ignition control module. I paid 16 bucks for it off a grand prix at a junkyard and it ran great ever since
@@KJackskii did u apply thermopaste ?
I had a misfire in number 6 and change the coil the next day the whole car went dead. I wonder should I change a whole ignition control module....
Mine is having the same problem 🤦🏻♀️ only on the 1st and can’t figure out why 🤦🏻♀️ any idea ?
very good information, thank you
Did you ever figure out the problem on that coil?
I changed my wires and plugs before my P305 misfire. i bought a new and installed it but it still misfired. i did this trick with new coil, no spark. i replaced old one and did this trick, it sparked once, i tapped the top of it coil then it sparked constantly. now no more P305 CEL. i measured the secondary posts, but my meter was not working and i lost my Fluke, well it got stolen from me.
So, what did you replace to fix the issue? Having same issue.
Kenneth Wiggins did you figure it out?
I got a crank no start... I got fuel to the rail (not only do I hear the pump go off but I can press the Schrader valve and get a squirt of fuel)... but I wanna make sure I got spark. Can I use this to test spark or no
Did you solve your problem? Having same thing
@@Izhart_ Hell no, I thought it was the ignition control module... replaced it since it was easy to do so and the old one was yucky anyway... aaaaaaand nothing
So right now it's sitting on a jack stand till it gets warmer out and I can get a proper socket to remove the crank pulley
@@Izhart_ oh BTW indeed I didn't have spark, just so ya know
My car doing the same thing what should I do I think it’s the coil pack not sure
Ignition control module trust me same issue
problem is your motor facing the wrong way
What will cause a 91 Buick. To miss fire
Get a timing light and check plug wires. If two on a coil don't fire, switch coils and retest. If it fires, replace the module. Use silicone grease on the module. Get plenty.
i have a 3800 it keeps burning modules.. NOBODY can get to the root of it. I've gone through about 6 of them. THey just keep putting a new module on. then it stalls again..
Put dielectric grease on bottom of module when changing. Also check under the module plate and see if ground wire is attached to bolt that is attached to engine.
@@johnsnyder9033 Wrong. You use thermal paste, not dielectric grease.
@@coleman6131 Yes! important.
@@johnsnyder9033 what!? theres a ground wire to reattach?
Its probably the cam/crank/ICM wire harness. Take the harness out and peek inside all the conduit. Mine was shorting together from wire insulation that dried up and fell off.
????? So what was wrong?
Title of video should be 'How to NOT fix a misfire issue'. "I tried several different things, none of which worked." Gee, thanks for all your time wasting 'help'.
The title should've been your first clue of deferment if a repair was what you were looking for 😏
So was it a bad ICM or coil pack?
Bad coil.
Also used a voltimeter to test coil
TheRedBullXJ did you figure it out? having same issue with a #5
Hello I am having the same problem The very front coil no spark at one terminal changed it with another coil I have and no spark again at one terminal same as yours what was the problem? Much appreciated thanks Rich
I changed the coil, and it still dosnt spark. Now what? The module?
That's exactly what I did...Heh heh, yup...20 bucks. Worked like a charm!
+EclipseStrife You can't go by that. P0300 could easily mean other things instead like fuel pump failure, clogged fuel filter, broken fuel pressure regulator, vacuum leak to pressure regulator, or intake manifold gasket(s) leak, among other things but the other things usually throw up other scan codes too or instead.
did or does it work
