What’s the deal with the red clay-like looking soil in the root ball of the dogwoood tree they removed?? Could that have been part of the issue outside of the shade?
See how they had all the dirt removed and roots exposed for the dogwood? That's what you're supposed to do on the burlap around purchased trees, and how you need to let roots spread out straight to prevent the circling roots.

I’d say so. Red clay isn’t very suitable for good tree health
