- "Hunger" : The last six weeks of the life of the Irish republican hunger striker Bobby Sands.
Sands debates the morality of the hunger strike with a visiting priest
- How's your smoke going?
- Grand.
- Mm, filthy habit, disgusting.
- Oh aye, awful. Lovely though.
- Aye, praise the Lord.
*both chuckle*
This is a great piece of acting. Fassbender gets the best lines but Liam Cunningham is simply outstanding.
To set this exchange as the crux of the entire movie is clever to the max.
As good as it gets
see the way sands threatens the priest ?
I couldn't agree more. I have rarely watched such a moving scene.
I just finished watching this scene and immediately had to come onto youtube to see what other people had to say about it. Incredible stuff
Haha exactly what I am doing
Sands . What a guy . Didn’t know him . But what a guy
I saw this at a cinema on release. I almost had to be carried out to a bar to get over it.
And it was a first date film! Well i did fuck her the night before, so we thought we should go through the official process 😂
I like to TEST potential GFs. See how far I can push the limits and what they're made of
I still do at 59. 😁
Such an underrated piece of art
Liam Cunningham moved in with Michael Fassbender and they rehearsed 15-20 times a day.
thanks for that, I hope its true
One of the best dialogue scenes in movie history.
Superb film, wonderful acting, dialogue, directing, all of it
I almost had to be carried out of the cinema. To the bar for a LOT of Jack Daniels with beer chasers. To process it.
It was a first date film, though I fucked her the night before. Thought we'd go through the correct channels
I'm now 59 and don't act any different
One of the best pro Irish films ever!!
Should have had a wider audience.
These 2 Irish actors show how much talent there is in Eire.
Acting.
Art.
I'm an Australian soldier, with Irish heritage and proud, serving OS.
Tiocfaidh ár lá
He was also really awesome in Fish Tank. And, though his role was brief, his part in Inglorious Basterds is my favorite of that movie.
"At least you're not bitter," "Aye, I could never be" - lol
Liam Cunningham is one of the most underrated actors going.
One of the most moving scenes I've ever seen.
Imagine being in a play in a theatre, you'll have to do scenes about as long as this and sometimes longer. Most actors have done that.
Before filming the movie they moved in together and practiced this scene at least 12 times a day.
No it only took one take. Cunningham said it himself in an interview. Just talent.
One of the best scenes ever !!
If you think about it, actors who do musicals, operas, and plays have to memorize over 3 hrs worth of choreography, lines, and song.
One of the best scenes I've ever seen
Michael fassbender does a good natural sounding northern Irish accent which is tricky to get right as they can come out Scottish or southern Irish. He probably listened to his mother as she is from larne and had a good idea of it from her he's an fantastic actor
true. my dad came from Tyrone and I went to University in Belfast (I'm english) between 1993-96
and I was speaking Irish within 3 weeks!
imagine if you got back to the editing room and saw a streaker run across the set
this movie did the Hunger strikers pure Justice which is something they deserved but never got
rip Bobby Sands ;_;
BIH
great fucking scene, one of the best ever!!!
great fucking movie as well!!!
they moved in toghether for a couple of weeks before shooting the scene!
@Gonko100
"To prepare for the scene, Cunningham moved into Michael Fassbender's apartment for a time while they practised the scene at least twelve times a day, sometimes repeating the scene fifteen times in a single day"
Excellent scene, the lighting enhances the intensity of the scene.
It is easy to know they both have huge theatre experience
I just realized that's the same actor who plays Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones. Time to look up more of his films.
this is one of the best banter scenes thus far
#bants
HUNGER seems to be impressive movie to watch
Holy shit I was 5 when this was uploaded
Incredible that it's been waiting here all that time for me to now stumble across it
wonderful
Great, natural scene.
This is such skillful movie making and acting....
Steve McQueen actually makes his actors "act"
I honestly like this even better than the famous monologue (that comes immediately after this) even though that's awesome also. But I lived in NI for a while (Derry) and the thing that really gets me on this particular part of the movie is the sense of humor. Nothing and nobody outside of Northern Ireland cuts the line between the most hilarious thing you've ever heard and the most live-alteringly serious thing you've ever heard so close....
He's a sneaky wee bastard...
...so he is
This bit was the break in the film for the audience to relax and gather an understanding (for those that the hunger strike was new to) to understand what was going on. Without this scene the film wouldnt be as amazing as it is.
tiocfaidh ar la
I have a hard time understanding everything and can't find this movie with English subtitles anywhere.
up there with the "casino desert scene"
Amazing scene, amazing acting, beautiful film. However, this wouldnt be all too hard for them to do with the theatre experience they have. Only took them four takes apparently (source:IMDb)
How the fuck do you remember all that dialogue. I can usually barely remember my own name. And I'm 59.
I almost had to be carried out of the cinema to a bar to process it all.
It was a first date film, but I'd already fucked her night before...😏
I LOVE LIAM CUNNINGHAM!!!! THAT IS ALLL. "Once there's wine involved."
Brillaint
They actually moved in with each other the rehearse for 12 hours a day
apparently cunningham and fassbender lived together for a while to practice this scene again and again.
Incredible
Good to see sources on the internet.
Sad but true long live Irish the brave, Irish the true, Irish the honorable,🇧🇬🇨🇽🇨🇮
Liam Cunningham moved into Michael Fassbender's apartment and they practiced the scene 15 times a day.
@jocksmen, they did it in one. It holds the record for single longest take in film.
they actually lived together for a while to practice this scene.
I think this sometimes rigid thing is the side effect of his controlled style (which, to be fair, I absolutely love, thus I can swallow the side effects too). By "controlled" I mean a bit more than "technical" . His friend McAvoy interprets this air of control as a result of a change in his state of mind. It's probably true, I don't see that in his early works.
Yeah not saying its a bad thing its just something i picked up on .The moment seemed to be lacking gracefulness in some parts .Like he was just trying to get through his lines still a good actor.Watch brando in apacolypse now the scene where he's talking to martin sheen. He's describing the first time he seen death on the battle field. The way he flows the way he pauses the way he re lives the experience. It's very natural like he meant to say everyword hes speaking
Fassbender has said that he reads the script tons and tons of times, like probably more that a hundred times
@shinewearsoff the whole movie is on youtube with english subtitles
@Gonko100 For actors who've done theatre, memorizing a 20-minute scene is probably child's play. Those guys usually have to retain up to an hour or two's worth of material on the night, so it's likely that a scene like this wouldn't provide much of a challenge for them.
@jeffersonpedler This isn't a pro Irish film, it's just a film about the last days of Bobby sands. The creator of this film Steve McQueen (an english man) said throught the making and during the premiere of this film that he had no agenda to promote or demote the politics of Bobby sands or views of the republicans and unionists in norther ireland.
@Xbibleblack Every single person on earth has an accent. American, Irish, English, Scottish, Welsh, German, Italian etc.
Go and watch the scene i described and watch carefully you'll kind get what im talking about . i cant help it i tend to pay attention to detail partially because im and aspiring actor myself .
@JAY OH The director of Shame directed Hunger he's the future of cinema IMHO
at 0:51 when the priest says "Cig ?" he answers "come on" (as in of course) ..is this a typical way of saying "yes" in belfast
There talking in English but don't understand a word of what their saying
In the single sentence you wrote you had two chances to get the word THEY'RE correct, and you couldn't do it. Pathetic. I'm not surprised you can't understand English, considering the fact that you can't write it.
c585 In fairness it is a tough, rough, tricky one to understand if you're not used to it. There's a version with subtitles
Well maybe if you opened your ears. You would understand what they are saying.
Michaels good at memorizing lines when he's doing his dialogue its like he's trying to remember his line .Not so much giving the appearance of putting together a thought
"childish skullduggery"
That was not mockery, 🏴🏴
Yeah, I also think sometimes he's a bit too technical. (What attracts me to him as an actor is not his techniques to be honest, although I think generally he uses them very well. I don't know... It's probably the atmosphere, the intense energy flows, the way he interprets characters.. He's quite an all-rounded actor, with some special weapons of his own).
I like Hunger and don't hate Shame. But yeah I prefer X men and Prometheus. Maybe some people have problems praising something (scifi/)superhero-related, thus they tend to praise his arthouse's roles more? Both roles open my eyes to the power an actor can have over a role, a lot. A thing of note is it seems both those directors allow actors to make experiments or change the script. Maybe that's why?
Yeah, best price should be on Amazon.
Really? I don't have that impression.
Plus from what I've heard, this man has an amazing memory when it comes to movies' little details and he has an obsession with reading scripts, like 250-300 times before doing a movie just to make the character get under his skin. I really don't think memorizing lines is one of his problems.
A German actor fights for the unity of ireland in this awsome film, how ironic, or not?^^ Go bless the Queen^^.
I watched it carefully, certainly. In fact I think that he says some parts too quick. I think if this was the real Sands there would be more awkward moments. I'm not an actor, thus probably I don't know as much as you (but I had to fake memory-related problems quite a lot:) so I tend to pay attention to things like that myself.)
He doesn't read many times to memorize the thing. He treats it like a musical score, reads and reads until a rhythm appears in his head. Thus, obsession, it is:)
ya blurt we need ya
Michael Fassbender has the same look as Roger Casement, which was also another Irish libertarian. last year i read "the dream of the celt" based on Roger Casement's personal journals. Michael Fassbender could make him great justice.
great post
@MrIrishrover2010 youre right, and hes from germany.
Smokin Books
@Xbibleblack No, we don't know what you meant. Don't say something that's incorrect and stupid and just assume other people know what you mean. And what do you mean we watch foreign films? Nearly every movie we watch is foreign, Ireland doesn't make many movies.
" he has an obsession with reading scripts, like 250-300 times " if he was so good with scripts it wouldnt take him this many times to learn his lines would it ? ?????. What i meant by that was i watched the scene where its a close up of michael talking to the priest..He's breaking down a child hood memory of his but the way in which he does it .It lacks fluidity like he's trying to recall his lines its not as if he's recollecting and experience. Not a bad thing just something i noticed
Such claims should be backed up with sources/facts.
Go on...
i know also that fassbender can be very technical with his craft maybe thats why he comes off.So rigid at times
bet a lot of this dialog was based upon actual meeting.??
@jamesanddaddy dialog was constant wonder how many takes.?
uk/usabhoy.
@jocksmen especially if ur from over there.?
Thank you, mate. Sorry if I offended. I could have asked in a much better manner. My apologies.
you play and play and play with the script till you have it naturally plus when the text makes sense to you it's easier to be memorized but than again I guess your question was rhetorical ;)
Why is Bobby shirtless and only wearing pants?
@jack23371 It is :)
@BioWolff subtitles are ignorant.
@mister18cm Im not Irish. I can't decipher their thick Irish accent.
@londonthistle Took 4 takes to get it done.
Does anyone have a transcript? I'm working on one right now, and having a real rough deal with understanding what they're saying.
sample:
B: *sometihng*
P: Priest Ettiquette. Never said before your arse.
B: Sit down then.
P: Thought i'd come over to you eager.
B: Best to over at the door.
P: You'll learn that at your first week at a seminary, boy. Cig?
B: C'mon.
P: Bit of a break from smoking the bible.
ack come on fucksake lol
Lol why can't people understand whats being said, i can understand them perfectly.
how the fuck did they memorize that
@mister18cm
No, his mother if Irish......
yeah i liked him in promethesus and x men hes really good at playing a robot not a fan of hunger. Not much of a fan of the movie shame either i felt like he could of done better without
Yeah he killed it in promethesus him and noomi rapace were all the movie needed in my opinion anyways . I like him in shame i just dont like shame i dont like the director .He claims to be this "Artist" i feel to many these days pass that word around like its a hanky.Shame reminded me of a jim carrey movie with a serious of sketches thrown together .Theres no continuity
please, don't insult this movie
@futsalfred2 it isnt that hard. quite easy if you open your ears
@Xbibleblack So you're one of those Americans who think the world revolves around them.
So you've eliminated the rest of the country except California...would you like to discuss how the rest of the country feels about you jaded, mostly over privileged, under traveled, know nothing outside of California folks? No? Because if you do, I'll tell you how I really feel.
Bad movie, but great scene.
