  • Episode 15 of the Chicago & North Western Harvard Subdivision in N Scale. The Harvard Subdivision imagines a world where the CNW is still operating today, and features modern operations in N scale. This episode we work on the area where benchwork was laid in the previous episode, installing the backdrop boards and laying over 14 feet of new triple track mainline. A large order of Scale Trains Dash 9s also arrived to reinforce the roster!

Love your work and great to see some warhammer hidden away. My hobby room has hundreds of them along with the trains.

If you're modeling the CNW as if the UP never took over there's a good possibility that those units had been repainted by the 2010's. UP tends to run everything into the ground and then maybe rebuild it. I think a little weathering makes everything look better but they don't necessarily have to be rust buckets.

Totally agree, my goal is to weather them enough to show that they've been in service for 20+ years, but are in good shape. If you look at photos of the CNW twins in the 2010s, they were in pretty good shape too. I definitely don't want to overdo it on the weathering!

I am familiar, but it has been years since I've visited. I need to go back there and make another trip now that I'm working on the layout!

I found your channel a few months back, and was briefly disappointed by the fact that someone else already thought of doing an alternate history CNW, but we're far enough apart in era and location that it should be just fine. Mine is set in the late 1980s, and what makes it alt history is mostly the bold and slightly insane plan of revamping the Cowboy Line, extending to Salt Lake City, and merging with the Western Pacific to make a Chicago-San Francisco connection that is just slightly longer than BN's Chicago-Seattle connection, but should theoretically be faster.
The changes are subtle, namely because I'm modeling an area that stays more or less the same feature wise, but still apparent. CNW's predisposition towards EMD power means that the C40-8s ordered in the late 80s in real life are a second order of SD60s, half of them standard cabs and the second half 'Triclops' 60Ms. They also order a handful of GP60s by trading EMD some mothballed WP equipment.
Last and most interesting, Oelwein's 'last hurrah' as a locomotive rebuild shop, CNW acquired schematics and details of the CF7 rebuilds done by the Santa Fe, and rebuilds some of their Fs to the second model pattern. These were rebuilt in the late 70s and still saw limited local and yard service into the early 2000s.
