We all have shortcomings, even this narrator. In spite of his shortcomings, John Wayne remains my favorite actor in my 80 years on this earth. I never get tired of watching him act. The Quiet Man, The Shootist, The Searchers, and True Grit are my favorites.
True Grit is also a great Duke Wayne movie. (Here's something the Left never seems to notice: The best example of someone with "true grit" in the John Wayne version of that movie is the Kim Darby character, Mattie Ross.) And I, a political conservative, also enjoy Big Jim McClain. As a lover of our U.S. armed forces, I'm extremely fond of EVERY Duke Wayne film I've ever seen about the U.S. military. Fact is, the vast majority of Duke's movies I've ever seen, I have enjoyed very much. Enough to have seen my favorites, at least two or three dozen of them, four or five times or more (on VHS, DVD, and later on Blu-Ray). Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Hawaii.
When, in an interview, JW was asked what his favorite movie was of all the ones he made, he said there were several reasons why he chose what he did, one was location. But when pressed to narrow it down, he finally stated that "The Searchers" was his favorite.

Far too much emphasis on "race." John Wayne was not a racist. He was a political conservative. We conservatives don't believe in giving anyone anything. People who work for the things they receive make better citizens. This has nothing to do with skin color. We, the American people, can do, should do, and must do far more then has ever been done before to help all our people have a better opportunity at success. Too much welfare, at least in my mind, and when it's not properly administered, causes more harm to people---no matter what their color---than most anything else. John Wayne was far from perfect.
