  • Veteran reporter Dan Rather visited Kent State University on Friday as a part of the dedication to a portion of the college's campus into the National Historic Landmarks.
May 4 marks the anniversary of 1970, where protesting students, observers and soldiers gathered, before the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four students and wounded nine others.
The 86 year old Rather talked to members of the press prior to the dedication of the land, where he answered questions about his career, this day in history, and on the state of America currently.

Was 11 - I don’t remember the rocks - I remember the girl putting a flower in a soldier’s gun - I remember crying watching the news and my dad, a WW2 vet, telling me never trust the government- they’re not on our side. What a time- and now we repeat- can’t imagine what would happen if the protesters today were treated the same.

There were some instances of rock throwing, but the guard was too aggressive. The objective of the guard was to disperse the gathering. They accomplished that without going over the hill and onto the practice field. Two of the students who were shot never attended any rallies or protests. One was in ROTC, and they were just trying to go to class and like everyone else thought it was over and safe to pass when the guard wheeled and fired. Many public officials asked Governor Rhodes to allow the campus to be shut down for a few days to allow everything to cool and get back to normal, and he refused.

Probably more than 4 would die but that would also depend on whose president. Don’t know your political views but if someone of Trumps ideology it would be horrible

When my sister lived in Cuyahoga Falls in the early 2010's while getting her Master's at the U of Akron, my daughter and I would go visit her. We would go to a shopping center in Stow and you can see the Kent State Library from the parking lot. I was 6 and remember some of it when it happened while my sister was 4. She barely remembers any of the turbulent times of the mid to late 60's. I pointed out to my daughter where the campus is and we tell Josey about what happened there on a beautiful May spring day that turned tragic and did expose how divided we were over Vietnam. Nothing more chilling to hear someone living in Kent while being interviewed back then actually say that those kids deserved to be shot and why wasn't more of them shot.

Sad comment Joe. This event was Kent State murder by the guard. This country is based on freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. One student killed was in ROTC training to go to Viet Nam. One girl killed was training to be a special needs teacher and was going to class with books in her hand. Your lack of intelligence and missing of the facts does not give me much hope for you.

The place I go for straight news is NPR news: Who, What, When, Where and How. Why is trickier Leave the detailed Why for a different page. News is bound to be less accurate when all that motivates are how many likes it gets, or the number of viewers, but not the accuracy of the stories. Ya'll know this and I don't really know why I keep typing here. All I wanted to say is that NPR is where I can find straight news. I honestly don't need anyone to tell me how I should feel about it. I'm perfectly capable to form my own opinions. I need no color commentary after a debate.

I have watched a number of videos on this horrid event. That one picture of jeff Muller, I just burst into tears. I ameven CRYING now as I am writing this commentary. I am so sad. I am still myself a male youth one year before adulthood (17). I am a young male that has been devastated from just watching history. This country has just TOO MUCH VIOLENCE! When shall this country EVER LEARN? WAR is NO answer to anything and for those Guardsmen to open fire on my past peers, I can't take it! I have listened to CSNY's 'Ohio' and that puts me in tears. Maybe I can go to Kent myself and volunteer at that memorial. museum. I try to be aperson of PEACE and I get distraught over war -- even the current war in Ukraine. I just cry my eyes out. What is currently going on in Sudan is also very sad to me as innocent people are losing their lives over WHAT? The Human Race is the only species on this planet that kills their own, it is so shameful. being an intelligent species, WHY oh WHY are humans KILLING other humanbeings over stupid labels? So sad. I am going to have a good cry now!

I have no desire to hear what Dan rather has to say about Kent State. He was probably a draft doger also. The students of today seem to care very little about what the government has to say. Partying at Ohio State and fighting with the cops. They used pepper balls this time, it could be deadly weapons next time. Students need to grow up.

Dan Rather was also roughed up while at the DNC convention in 1968...check out crowd control with that protest as well. Dogs, batons, beatings.....it was total chaos.

Dan Rather tried to enlist in the United States Marine Corps but washed out. Also he tried to discredit then-President Bush with fake documents supposedly proving he was AWOL during his military service but got caught out quickly. Even Walter Cronkite said Rather deserved to be fired from CBS.
