For a damaged skin barrier which is some of the many forms of acne, psoriasis, and eczema the answer is petroleum jelly preferably Vaseline brand. Many of the other products she mentioned are good but the ingredients can cause irritation because the barrier is compromised. The molecule of petroleum jelly is too large to enter the skin. It is also volatile meaning it doesn't sink into skin, it instead eventually evaporates into the air. Volatile sounds bad but its actually good when it comes to skin. Natural oils and butters penetrate the upper layers of skin. Many moisturizer ingredients penetrate the upper layers as well. If you skin barrier is damaged, those thongs can wreak more havoc and even cause allergies and bad reactions. Lanolin, shea butter and other ingredients that may be considered great for the skin aren't all that great when the skin barrier is compromised. Many skin ailments are supposed to be healed from the inside anyway. A person grows new skin cells from the inside. Vaseline protects what's compromised from the outside. I hope this helps.
I have Psoriasis & I can 110% attest to Vaseline being the superhero topical product in my routine! I slather on Vaseline an hour before my shower, then wipe off the excess & put on my salicylic acid shampoo [it can penetrate better when the scales are softened], wait another 10 mins before showering, gently exfoliate off the dead skin w/ a scalp massager, then I put on Vaseline again after I dry up. I've been using salicylic acid & coal tar for years & it's done some damage control, but my scalp has never been in such good condition as it is now. I'm gonna see if it helps the psoriasis & eczema patches I have elsewhere. 💕
I love how direct and to the point you are and how you mention products of all different prices with differing ingredients having similar /same purpose. Thanks for always being honest and not trying to sell people on anything
This absolutely works. When my psoriasis and/or eczema act up, I only moisturize and use vaseline. My skin heals much more quickly that way and I don't have to worry about additional irritation.
Dr. Dray delivers the important information, analysis, and options for treatment in a coherent and comprehensive way, all in a quick minute. (And looks fab.)

I appreciate you keeping it real, regardless of what people comment or think. I still love and use the Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Hydration Face SPF. It feels like moisturizer and doesn’t burn my eyes like most do. I love the smell of it. I also still use and love the NYX Lingerie lipliner in Embellishment, sadly they discontinued it. I also consider that 50 is not really middle age as the average life expectancy is around 79 or 80. That means 39 to 40 is more mid in age. Cicaplast b5 actually reddens and irritates my damaged moisture barrier for some reason. Only thing I’m using on it now is a eurecin moisturizer. even cerave heavy moisturizing cream reddens and irritates it.
They changed the formula of Cicaplast. I read many bad reviews, even on La Roche-Posay website, that it makes their skin worse... I have no clue what ingredient could be the cause. It's super weird, because Cetaphil cleanser changed their formula too, and same thing as with Cicaplast. But there is no a single ingredient that could cause it. Do they hide some ingredients and don't put them on the labels? Anyway, that's so disappointing, as I wanted to try them both, but I don't want to risk...
Thanks, Dr. Dray! I feel as though you were speaking to me directly because I put something on my neck last night that caused a burning red patch. It hurt so much it kept me up all night from the pain. This morning I did put some baby diaper rash ointment (triple paste zinc ointment) and it helped a lot. I think it may have been from a cream with a lot of ceramides and other ingredients that my skin is not used to.
Many cosmetic companies took mineral oil or parafinnium liquidium out of their moisturizers and I think it was a mistake as it is soothing to very sensitive skin, in my case anyways. It acts as a barrier but only some creams worked for me. The formulas were changed though so I have to look for others. It's difficult when products get discontinued if they help sensitive skin, like Lancome Nutrix. I wish Lancome would bring back Nutrix, as it was a healing product from the 1940's on but they stopped making it 10 years or so ago.
The Cicaplast baume repaired my skin barrier within a week. I love it so much and can only highly recommend it. I even use it every single night a moisturiser by now. I have combination skin, it still doesn’t break me out, it keeps my skin so moisturised and i even noticed that i barely ever break out anymore. My skin has never been better.
Funny, I recently went to my dermatologist office for a horrible rash on my face and neck and the PA I saw told me I didn’t need to change my skincare routine. When I came for an f/u, I saw my dermatologist and she thinks I’m allergic to some skincare or hair are I’m using, but even she didn’t tell me to back off. I was told to come in a few weeks for patch testing and given a triamcinolone shot. It’s….better but still here, but I hope it’s nothing I’m really attached to. I love my skincare! 😢
Ok, I’m not a derm but I have used that moisturizer & continue to use it regularly. It’s one of my favs and really does help keep your skin barrier health and intact. I’ve been using Altreno for a few years and Mighty Biome keeps my skin from getting irritated on Tret nights. Also, another fav, if you wanna check it out, Cosrx Pure Fit Cica Cream Intense. I had to do this recently! I used 1% tretinion and it was too strong. My skin started to peel on my face so I washed with a mild cleanser, used a thick cream and then applied cerave healing ointment. It worked so well!!
I innerstand this is for a damaged skin barrier. However my curiosity can't help but ask, can this be done as a proactive measurement? Thank you in advance.
Bioderma kerato+ has 1.8% salycilic acid burnt and damaged my skin around the chin area. I had a few acne there but when I put on that product, the area started to peel, had a massive purging in the same area and now i have blisters. It's also heating up. I'm lost and I'm gonna cry myself to sleep😅
How do you use sunscreen if you have a damaged skin barrier though? How can you even wash off the sunscreen without stripping your skin? A mild cleanser won’t wash off a water-resistant sunscreen. This is the part that confuses me, since I don’t know what sunscreen would be tolerated by a damaged skin barrier, and how that sunscreen can be properly removed at the end of the day so it won’t clog the pores and further irritate the skin.
Prequel has 4 different skin protectants available. I’ve tried the gel and the balm, which are both great, and I assume the ointment and cream are high quality as well.
I often get damaged skin barrier ( hypersensitive oily acne prone skin) but can't use anything other than oil free water based gels like glycerin or hyaluronic since thick patrolatum, silicones or ceramide based products aggravate my acne all the more😢
I had to use laser treatment. Very expensive but it worked. Other creams that were prescribed really did not. A dermatologist allowed a technician to put a chemical peel on me for 15 minutes instead of 5 minutes. This was a very serious burn. It would not go away with time or creams.
@@katec4096 I am just afraid of laser and that it might do more harm. And I heard people have to go back every so often but not sure if it's the same case with chemical burn type of damage. I tried retinol creams but it just made the redness spread so had to stop.
