Talofa lava everyone. They say a lot happens in a day, well for me its been a crazy 22 hours. I performed last night in Apia, spent early hours of the morning nursing a loved family member in hospital and on my return home i found out my youtube channel got shut down. And no one can explain why... which put a downer on the launch of my E LE’O A’U SE FUFULU ULO video.
But as they say, its hard to keep a good man down so we will try this again. So, thank you all again for your amazing support & I hope you will join me on my country music journey #NashvilleDreams. Fa’afetai tele lava & GB - MrCowboy62 (Sam Chookoon, Vaitoloa, Western Samoa).

As a cook island maori, I must say that out of all of us polynesian's, the samoan's would have to be the most modernised in music making. Not only in tradition, but they also mingle in with other cultural musicians mixing in a spice of multicultural flavour within their music. And a very nice song. I'm very intrigued and impressed!

  • @theephraimite
    @theephraimite 2 роки тому +61

    Translation:
    Verse 1
O my wife, why have you treated me like this?
You used to call me honey and your darling.
Maybe my taking care of your parents is the reason
But you swore to me it was good in your sight.
I was pounded by the chores I did many times
While your brothers went hanging out and bus riding.
I sleep at night while shedding tears.
It’s as if I am a serpent being slain while it’s eyes are open. (Samoan proverb/metaphor)
    Chorus
I am not a faalifu maker (faalifu: a Samoan delicacy/dish) and nighttime security.
I’m not a laundry boy and a pot cleaner.
I’m not an offspring of an animal that you can treat me like this.
The cocoa pounding bowl is there for you to have for a husband.
    Verse 2
You thought I didn’t catch sight of that car you came in, that parked off some distance.
And I heard his voice say, “Baby, see you tomorrow morning.”
O my heart, it felt like I was dying.
I saw you around the corner while I was standing alone with my umbrella.
I didn’t know there was another man since you applied for a job at the transvestite’s salon.
But, girl, return my rock. (Sung after the last chorus to end the song. The rock he refers to is a very smooth rock that is used to pound cocoa seeds to make Samoan cocoa.)

FULL TRANSLATION as requested by @Lena Sopi. (just copied this from the other video)
The story is about a husband who believes he's been taken for a ride by his wife and her family.
He gets snowed under with household chores. From working into the night which makes him feel like a night watchman, to washing pots (hence the title of the song) and pans while his wife's brothers do bugger all and enjoying the breeze from riding on buses. The last straw is when he suspects his wife of being unfaithful so he decides to leave but not before offering his wife his cocoa-mashing mortar as his replacement.
    Here it is.....
Oi lo'u to'alua 'ea, se a ua fai ai ita fa'apea Oh! My dear wife, why am I being treated this way
E le sa e ta'u honey ma ta'u o lau manamea The one you referred to as honey and your love
Pei ai ona o le tausi ai ina o matua le fa'apogai Perhaps my treatment of your parents is the reason
Na e tauto mai ai ia a'u ua sili i lau va'ai You swore that I'm the only one in your eyes
E tu'i pala lava a'u i fe'au i le tele o taimi Most of the time I'm smothered with chores
A o tafafao ou tuagane ua ti'eti'e pasi While your brothers chill out on bus rides
Ou te moe i le po ma le maligi o o'u loimata At night I go to bed in tears
Ua pei ita o le gata e fasia ae pupula ona mata I'm like a snake that looks on while being slayed
    E le'o a'u o se fai fa'alifu ma se leoleo po I'm neither a cook nor a night watchman
E le'o se fai tagamea ma se fulu 'ulo oh oh I don't do laundry or wash pots
E le'o se tama a se manu ua e fai fa'apea ia a'u I'm not a beast given the way you treat me
Le tanoa tu'i koko lena e fai mou to'alua Take as your husband, the cocoa mashing mortar
    E fa'apea lava oe e le'i maua atu i la'u va'ai You thought I did not see
Le ta'avale lea na e sau ai ae tu mamao mai That car you came in stopped a fair way from me
Ma lona si'uleo na ou lagona I heard his gentle whisper
"Baby see you tomorrow morning" "Baby see you tomorrow morning"
Oi aue ita e lota fatu pei ta te oti Oh! My heart, It felt like I was dying
Ua ou maua taitaia nei ma oe i le tulimanu I've somehow driven you into a corner
    A o tutu atu ai o a'u ma la'u fa'amalu As I stand idly with my umbrella
Ou te leiloaina ua iai seisi tagata I didn't know you've found somebody else
Talu na e apalai i le fale faiulu a le mala Since you joined that gay hairdresser's salon
    (repeat chorus x 3) (repeat chorus x 3)
Ae toe fa'afo'i mai suga o la'u ma'a But return my pestle back to me.

For those who don’t understand Samoan, I hope the simple translation above might help you understand the meaning of this amazing song. As I was listening to it, I realized that the writers of the song touched a raw-nerve so to speak. Suffice it to say that the cultural context from which this song was written, addresses the issue of the “faiava” or the “son-in-law’ who lives with and serves his wife’s family, As is often the case, these men are sometimes treated as servants (in the song he calls himself a “slave”) of the wife’s family. If the wife’s father is a chief in her village, and her family is quite prominent, the role of the “faiava” becomes even more difficult, particularly if he is from a less prominent family of another village. So this song deals with this issue. In a way, I would call it, “The Lamentations of The Son-In-Law!” Hahaha... to all the “faiavas” out there, cheers man! Somebody finally hears your cry.

    • @MusMasi

I remember one laughing samoans show I went to, Tofiga said there is a samoan word for son in law, Faiava, it also means .......slave :)

It can really suck though, even if its a nice girl and all her friends and most of her family, like 90% approve of you, just one or two siblings out of 5 or 6 can make it almost impossible for you, especially if they are brothers, older brothers and she is not ready to stand up to them. the scenes in the video and the words and emotion are really bringing back memories for me hahaha.
