- "The best in the world." That's a bold statement, but I've been dealing with ants in my kitchen for many years. I keep my kitchen clean, but if I fail to wash a knife I used for chicken, the ants swarm to it. These bait packets are the best way to eradicate ants. They take the bait back to the colony where the poison kills the queen and other ants. And I should mention the ants that invade my kitchen are protein ants. They love my roast chicken, especially chicken breast meat. Some ants seek sugar rather than protein, so a variation of these packets - such as mixing some of the poison with honey or jelly - might work better for sugar ants.

The ants that were eating sugar a month ago are now eating protein! Different needs at different times of their growth cycle? 🤔
Maybe protein ants moved in and took over. After fighting protein ants for a while I noticed sugar ants going for my jar of honey. However, the protein ants came back. The battle never ends. -Dennis

Thank you so much. Darn black carpenter ants around mothers day start intruding on the house and now they gonna be exterminated. I hadn't thought of the difference of sugar ants and protein.
I used this system for getting rid of our ants. It works. I had an old piece of chicken tender that I had over cooked. It was very dry, and I figured...let's give it a try. Like clockwork...after I minced the tender into as fine a particle size that I could with a sharp knife, I mixed in regular borax powder (same that you use in laundry) and placed the mixture into Ziplock baggies (3 of them). I left one end of the baggie unzipped so the ants could get in. The amount of Borax powder was about half a tablespoon. I didn't want the mixture to be too strong because I wanted the worker ants to make it back to the colony with the bait. The ants came in droves (verifying they were protein ants). A few days later...there were fewer ants. By the 4th day...they were all just about gone. The queen was terminated. This system works like a charm. The trick is understanding if the ants respond to protein or sugar. If they come back, I'll repeat this process. I have lots of Borax left over.
It's an excellent laundry booster and many other uses.

Borax, also known as sodium tetraborate, is a white mineral powder that's also used as a cleaning product. It can help get rid of stains, mold, and mildew, and can kill insects like ants.
I clean houses for a living and this might be a great tip to pass along to some of my clients who can't seem to get rid of their ants in the conventional way. However, I'm wondering if you couldn't just use a can of cat food or a jar if chicken baby food instead of having to chop up a chicken if you have it on hand...
I think you can. The ants in my house love cat food!
A clean house is useless here in the Philippines. Been living here 9 years. Just no way to make any house ant proof here, not that I know of. Nothing seems to permanently keep them out.
Ants are cannibalistic and when an ant dies it's buddies just consume it as part of their regular food supply. The ants that find the bait (either the protein as you described or Boric Acid and Sugar) will consume some of the bait before bringing a supply back to feed the colony.
Between the bait that is shared around and the now dying ants the Acid is spread around to kill the entire colony.
The protein and acid mix is also effective for Yellow Jackets, Hornets and Wasps and can be positioned UP out of the way of pets.
Not all ants are cannibalistic. I used to put out earwig poison in some spots around my house. It killed the earwigs and potato bugs but then the ants dragged the dead bugs back to their nests and all the little mounds that pop up between the patio bricks had piles of dead ants around them as they pulled the dead out of the hive and threw them out.

My ants don't like sugar or grease. This worked. I have only seen one or two ants since I made the bait. Will use it again.
Well today you showed me there are two kinds of ants. For 2 weeks I have baited with sugar+borax+water to make a paste and a liquid. No luck. Next I tried powdered sugar +borax+water. No luck. Today I put out peanut butter+syrup+borax. No takers. I watched your video and I put out a piece of scrambled egg and they swarmed it. Now I will make your chicken bait and I am sure they will be gone. Thank you Dennis.

You can actually use sugar and gelatin powder mix with borax. I use it it works for both
Thank you so much for sharing that not all ants are attracted to sugar. I have been unsuccessfully trying to kill them for a couple of years and they only got worse. Did your aluminum foil test with meat and some juice. Well now l see with my eyes they are protein ants. No one else ever shared this needful bit of knowledge.

This is very interesting! I never knew there were some ants that like sugar and some like protein! I have an ant hill in an area outside that I want to plant in so I'll try this to see if it gets rid of them!

About chopping the meat up fine: would one of those chicken or tuna cans work? They are chopped up and usually fall apart quite easily

How do you keep animals from taking the packets ...like crows and other animals ?
I put them under heavy ceramic pots where the ants can go but the animals can't.
Canned meat like Canned Ham, spam, chicken, even tuna works. Canned cat or dog food.

Assuming mine are protein/grease ants as well. They’re going after the wet cat food and won’t touch the bait traps from Walmart and hardware store. I bought food grade diatomaceous earth, Terro granules for around house perimeter, boric acid, and Combat 2 in 1 ant bait stations (supposedly works for both sugar and grease ants). Received everything today except the Combat traps so I’m going to try this method right now before they find my pantry cabinet! My only problem is the pets and keeping them away from harmful powders, sprays, and granules. That, and the fact that my mom’s house is literally falling apart and I can’t pinpoint where they’re coming in. This has been a yearly occurrence the last 3-4 years. Now that mom passed away last month, I’m trying to minimize any further damage to the house. I’ve been here for 3 weeks and completely overwhelmed.
I have cats also.. i think for outside.. putting a heavy like flower plate over the bait would work, ants could get between the floor and the plate.. // in house you can put it like in containers from yogurt and tape it around so cats wont get into it. People make a drier mix with water sugar borox and also liquid. with liquid they can spray a bit. But i thik i wwould use Cant of tunafish for Protein ants.. maybe a cat food pate, and again put it in some platic that has a top on it. securely over.
Protein ants ! should be in a title or make another video with Protein Ants in the title. People are really searching for this. The difference why sugar water and sweets do not work for some ants. They are looking for protein. Mine certainly did look for protein, cat food.

See, the other ant killer folks always tell you to use a mix with sugar. Obviously that will NOT work for "protein ants." I put a combination of sugar and baking soda out on a trail I found by our front door and it did not do much good but then we noticed the ants often times carrying dead bugs around. This tells me (with your confirmation) that we have ants that want protein and not sugar. For Yellow Jackets I learned that they like sugar in the earlier time of the year but as fall approaches they then want protein rather than sugar. Just FYI folks. Great video and thank you.

I haven't tried peanut butter. Put a little dab on a piece of foil and place it next to a trail of ants. Wait a while. If they gravitate to it, there's your answer. If they seem uninterested, try something else.
So if the ants were on a knife in your sink they are coming up the drain pipe into the kitchen sink. Hmmm. How do you block them from getting in?
They can't come up the drain because of the U-shaped trap under the sink and I have the area around the pipe sealed. They were going along the back of the kitchen counter and down into the sink. I put the bait packet on the counter after I washed the knife and 12 hours later they were gone. -Dennis

I live in the Philippines and ANTS are just everywhere in every home. I have been here for 9 years and in my house I have both sugar and protein ants. I have had American ant bait and stuff sent to me here but none of the American stuff seems to do anything. They just don't eat it or are attracted to it. Any suggestions?
Thank you for this video. I believe my ants are protein eaters since they go after the cat food I put out for the feral cats I feed outside. I will probably make these packets for the ants, hopefully the bags can keep the cats out of them. If not I will try small glass bottles with covers and just punch little holes on the cover. You may know this -- but to keep your cat food free on ants, set the cat food dish inside another bigger dish that has water in the bottom. The ants will not cross the water to get to the food.
What about if they go for just about anything or everything you put on countertop? I'm sick of them. I can't feed my cat without having them come outta nowhere.
Never knew about the two types of ants. I wonder if you mix hot water, sugar, and chicken. then mix the boric acid in a small plastic cup. Leave it out on a cap. wonder if both types of ants would go for it??

Didn’t mix well, didn’t work better than borax sugar and water.
Put your dog's food dish in a larger dish with some water in the bottom. The ants won't cross the water to get to the food dish, but the dog / cat can still eat.

Another tip.. used cat food pate.. so you dont have to mince chicken.. I have cats and ants have been attacking the leftovers of cat food. So now.. i used the pate cat food and mixed it with boric Acid. They have been eating it. Just did it last night .. waiting to see how fast it works.

This is great! And better than just leaving an open container of bait under/behind appliances, HOPING the cat or dog can’t reach it. Uuugh. I love my mom’s pets like my own, but it makes things a lot more difficult as far as getting rid of any pests. Mice- I tried an electronic mouse trap that zaps the mouse when it goes in and stands on the plate, since the cat wouldn’t be able to get her paw in and around I thought it’d be perfect. But… it’s still flashing green for almost 3 years, and the cat has brought me many dead mice since buying them.

And that’s another reason why I don’t use poison for the rodents- I don’t want the cat ingesting any poison as a result of consuming any part of the mouse, and I don’t wanna find the mouse only after it starts to smell in some inconspicuous spot of the house. I worried a little about outdoor pets getting into it. But I find an overturned flower pot with a heavy rock on top works well.

Yes, in the event of pets the packets should be placed where the animals can't get to them, such as in the cabinet under the kitchen sink. Outside, I place them under heavy ceramic pots animals can move. -Dennis
Why not put both sugar and fat in the same packet? Does this work outside? I dont hae ants i side, but they are terrible outside- big & small, black & red, several types of nests- cant stand still in my yard!!
My ants have destroyed so many coffee pots now I had to throw away a beautiful new kurig k cafe and a new beautihul Bunn to replace would cost almost 400 dollars😒 so I just bought a old fashioned percolator I can see in wash out ... and I keep my kitty food and water in a cookie pan with diatomaceous earth .. thank you I'll give it a try
They always go to around my coffee pot. No think they’re sugar ants. Had it not been for my son, I wouldn’t have know man they were there. (I am legally blind) so I used the magnifier on my phone and they’re going nuts and getting in the bait but now it’s got ants in it, a lot of ants, do I need to change it out? I’ve filled 2 so far today. I wish I knew where their home is so I could just poor boiling water down it. They just randomly showed up one day.
The ants carry the poison back to the nest, killing it. But they'll be back. I keep bait packets set up all the time, especially under my kitchen sink. The ants will go away and I won't see any for a week or two, then they'll swarm to the bait again. I try to keep them under control, but unless I employ an exterminator to spray every three months, I'll never get rid of them permanently. -Dennis
They might be those tiny pharaoh ants. I hate them. I never knew such a thing existed.

Will this work for Pharoah ants ?
I did some research. Pharoah ants are supposedly attracted to sugar and sweet foods. Protein bait wouldn't work. You might try mixing a small amount of boric acid powder into some honey.
To me, the trick would be keeping pets away from the chicken.
Cover packet with heavy planter or ceramic bowl. Tape it down if needed. Place a 1/2 inch square of cardboard under rim so ants can get underneath.

What about powdered milk?
I haven't tried it. I wonder if the powdered milk would have enough aroma to attract the ants. However, it's inexpensive. Try a little and see what happens.
My best way is in Spring open all your windows-and doors and grab that handy can of WD-40 spray all along the trim and over the doors threshold, BRAVO lasts at least 4-6wks!! Works on ants, spiders(most) ticks.
Ps: my dogs and kits never messed with it on threshold, they don’t like the smell. Let them sniff the can first, the show them the smell of the threshold.

Does this work on goast ants
I have a much easier method. Get a can of pate cat food, or a jar of all-meat baby food. Already very finely minced or pureed. I use a plastic container food came in. Mix borax with boiling water until it's all dissolved and the water's clear. Only maybe a teaspoon of water to less than half a teaspoon of borax. Mix well with cat or baby food. Cut several triangular holes into container near top. Put bait on lid, and place container over it. You can use a rock to hold it down, or put a plant pot over it so no animals can get to it. The ants here have no interest in Terro or sugar either.

Can you just use a zip lock baggie to make these packets? I don’t have any type of heat sealer? Also, to use a sealed bag, do you make a small slit on it so ants can get inside?
Yes, you can use a zip lock baggie. I either use a paper punch to make a hole or I use scissors to snip off a corner. I hope that helps. -Dennis
Do the ants come back after 1 month or later? Mine seem come back from the same location/spots few weeks later...
They do come back eventually. I read somewhere that several bait stations all around a home and for several weeks might be necessary to really eradicate a lot of ants. However, they'll always come back because they're all over the neighborhood.
well I'm pretty sure the ants I'm dealing with are sugar... they are very small ants and are attacking my honey container.... I diligently keep the outside wiped off and my kitchen spotless... yet they STILL knew the honey was there... craazy!
Would this work on red ants?
I don't know. Do they prefer sugar of protein? Where do they go in your kitchen or pantry? Identify the food they seek and then mix some of that with boric acid powder. Leave it where they can easily swarm to it. They'll probably be gone in 12 to 24 hours. --Dennis
@@MyKitchenVlog I had a major problem over the summer. They swarmed my patio so bad it looked like a moving carpet. I dusted diatomaceous earth powder over them and that worked short term but they just moved the colony. I haven't seen them lately since applying DE to the new colonies. I think they were attracted to my raised bed garden totes that I applied worm compost to. The compost has kitchen scraps in it too, but no meat/dairy. I don't mind black ants because they're pollinators. Thanks for the recipe! 🧤
If ants eat only sugar or meat I’d think a bait for both types of ants is actually the best.
