What's your favourite movie from the '90s? It was a special time with amazing films both in Hollywood and internationally, so it's hard to choose really.
Naked always 🥰 people misunderstood as a misogynistic no it’s about individuals who are misogynistic. The cook the thief the lover and the wife. Great soundtrack and pure romance. City of Lost Children Raise the red lantern Run Lola Run (my dads fave) Natural Born Killers Sonatine The film being improvised makes this pure genius and my fave film. It’s the London I know… beautifully dark and dangerous, pregnant with possibilities… Cruel to be kind… But I disagree it absolutely is about the city. The blue grey light is like nowhere else on the planet. It’s about juxtaposition of class which is still rigidly perceived in London. But most importantly it’s about the very British pastime of winding you up, taking a piss … about how he destroys everything he comes into contact with but johnny is and Jeremy are unreachable. They come to destroy. Until they meet two women who are invulnerable to the usual tactics. One stands up one’s apathy is lying down until they both have the button that is off limits. Both Johnny and Jeremy are rattled retreat return. This movie is not about an epiphany of redemption, reform but repetition. Same shite different pile.
@@kayoss8787 Great analysis, thanks for sharing your thoughts! The amazing thing about Naked and Leigh's films in general is that even for someone who is not familiar with London it can show that world through his detailed characters. That's a great list, I love Takeshi Kitano too. I actually have videos about The Cook, The Thief, The Wife and Her Lover and Raise the Red Lantern too, if you're interested :)
@ yes thank you I’m watching both 🤗 If you enjoy Beat Takeshi he had a lively stint as host on an awesome game show “Takeshi’s Castle” not high art but lots of fun as he started his career as a standup comedian in between live sex shows 😝
This remarkable performance of David Thewlis was etched in my mind and i immediately recognized him years later when he appeared for a few seconds in the big lebowski. Both are some of my favorite films
Yeah, because it's terribly expensive to shoot films like these. And want it or not, there's just no money to be put on indie productions like these nowadays. Films like these being done nowadays just come out of a place of pain and suffering, because there's almost no support to shoot them.
@@joaocorreiamedia I partly disagree. Many of Mike’s Lees films were way cheaper than studio films and made money even in small markets, and then especially on VHS. As for modern film in this style, you are correct; developing a film like this day would never budget for rehearsal and have hands off but not because of money…..there’s no trust in film makers these days. All they care about is the lowest denominator super heroes/well known actors in trifle. Sad. We are saturated with good film still but it much harder to become aware. Having the same problems with music. It will improve but it’s janky times we live in.
@@GIBKEL There used to be a big market for mid budget films, mostly thanks to DVD sales. With streaming, you either strike when the iron is hot, or you make absolutely no money. And people won't put money on a film that might be good, they'd rather back up a slightly more mediocre film that brings results rather than an expensive masterpiece that might bring some money back (maybe).
Great presentation. I saw this film back in 1994 in an underground cinema in Croatia during the Homeland war. It had a tremendous impact on me on many levels!
Glad to see Naked getting some attention, it's been a favorite of mine for a long time. Definitely too bleak of a film for some, a lot of people I've shown it to either hated it for being pretentious with it's dialog or for being overly cruel. I always viewed it as a dark odyssey of someone trapped inside unrealistic expectations of others and himself whilst unable or unwilling to cope in the face of trauma. Some awful things are eluded to in regards to Johnny's past and while that doesn't excuse his actions it clearly effects his ability to emote in a way that is genuine. He gets frustrated easily especially when he feels misunderstood and lashes out. It's an excellent character piece of someone who's clearly suffering but whose actions and outbursts allow the cycle to continue. And all his charming and clever fronts won't save him from that cycle.
11:06 nah thats just london and London in the 90s was probably worse also love this video Naked is one of my favourite films it captures the feeling of the city at night the loneliness of it
I was just Watching your Wong Kar Wai analysis then this drops! Can’t imagine how revitalising it is! From a student in Cinema here in Paris 🇫🇷France 🇫🇷 sending Flowers.
I remember it being a very powerful film. I got a similar vibe and feel from Midnight Cowboy, not exactly an equivalent, but the raw bitterness and torn idealism, the brilliant and explosive acting and overall grittiness impacted viewers as deeply. Completely different kind of movie, and basically soulless, but The Usual Suspects got me the most from the decade in terms of what it did with the language of cinema and what it did to my head.
Man, your channel is my greatest youtube find in months. Amazing editing given how few eyes you have on you. Cannot wait to see your work catch on, as given its obvious quality i have no doubt it will.
Thank you! I really appreciate your comment and I'm glad you feel this way about my channel. My main focus is to improve my content and share my love for movies with others, so as long as there are a few people interested I'm happy. If the channel is growing in the meantime that's just a bonus and a good indicator for me.
Neat to see both David Thewlis and Timothy Spall in two different movies by the same director, they would later appear together in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Nope. Apocalypse Now opening scene in the hotel. He was really, as in real life, drunk as a skunk. Real blood too. Must have been surreal to film that.
Nope. It’s easier as an actor to be in that state if you’re actually drunk, he would have walked into the room drunk so the idea that it was a spectacle is rubbish. It would be far more surreal to film someone switch to that state like nothing, most people couldn’t do that especially not Martin Sheen. Any addict could have done what Sheen did, act like an ape. It’s far more impressive to get to that state sober. It’s lazy acting under the influence.
When you have nothing, you must sink everything into it. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ "Before I start, I must see my end. Destination known, my mind's journey now begins. Upon my chariot, heart and soul's fate revealed. In time, all points converge; hope's strength, resteeled. But to earn final peace at the universe's endless refrain, we must see all in nothingness... before we start again." 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨ --Diamond Dragons (series)
The original was bleach bypass film just saying it was darker than the colour added DVD version you are using for the film exposition which made it better. But the colour release was terrible to destroy a classic. The most interesting thing about Johnny and Jeremy/Sabastion is that they are the mirror of each other like ying yang characters. Try making that movie in 2020's it would get cancelled before shooting.
Here's the tracklist: Ardie Son - Wayfarer Ian Post - I Must Be Dreaming Lance Conrad - Going to a Dark Place - No Piano Lance Conrad - Waiting and Hoping Maya Belsitzman & Matan Ephrat - Once Upon a Time Nono - Appassionato Nsee - Frozen Lake - Slowed and Reverbed Rotem Cinamon - Dusk
Someone in the comments really mentioned Martin Sheen in Apocalypse now, it’s like comparing Kim Kardashian to Kate Middleton. Sheen was a drunk acting like an ape, which any man can do. You could have grabbed an addict off the street to resemble Sheen for no money at all. If you think spilling your own blood makes you a better actor then you’re drunk yourself. Thewlis reached that state sober over a much longer period of time, something Sheen could only have dreamed of reaching, which is why he was intoxicated on Apocalypse Now, he couldn’t reach that state sober.
Amazing film, saw it in the cinema when it came out. "I've seen more life in an open grave"...which is exactly how I feel about the narration to this video. 🙂
In order to achieve a good performance, you have to be immersed into da character, think of Joaquin Phoenix in Joker (2019), some of his scenes were improvised, frankly I always knew Joaquin would make history at the Oscars and he made it.

Damn…they rarely make movies like this anymore. Mikes movies gave me some of my deepest film memories when I was coming of age and taste being made.

I had my first role in a Hollywood production last week and drew on some of Thewlis' character for the role. An inspiring actor and director!

Stumbled across this late one night, had no idea what to expect, it was riveting but bleak.
Phenomenal analysis, this was great! :)
Method acting and staying in character are two different things.
an actual artisitic method of recording to film, actual art
Amazing video!
I think Naked reduced my life expectancy with five years at least
Amazing video. Subscribed.
"just three days in johnny's life" so true and so very depressing
hey THAT'S GABE NEWELL AT THE 0:16 MARK
Naked is probably the greatest film of the 90's.
this is a great great video about a film i loved when I saw it but forgot about. thank you for this. inspiring.
2:16 it’s actually all set in One Day (24 hours to be accurate) as far as i remember
I love it. I've never seen this film but now have some homework.
Reminds me of how much I want to find the screenplay and act the monologue!
It was actually published by Faber & Faber called 'Naked and Other Screenplays', so you might be able to get it if they are shipping to your country.
Incredibly good job
Have my copy on VHS! 📼
That was great!
