I listened to the audiobook of 1776 narrated by McCullough and it's amazing. He takes you there and makes you feel the weight of every sacrifice. Definitely worth a read.
If you read one of Mr. McCullough's books, you will want to read them all and gift them to your friends!!! A master story teller! He is unique and a great historian.
He's a phony. 90% of the videos with him in them have the comments turned off because he's such a narcissistic hack that doesn't tolerate dissent. He is a coward that kneels in front of the Leftist, Woke Bolsheviks that wont anyone rights of Angela Davis speak on a college campus.
I saw Mr. McCullough in Columbia Missouri a few years ago. I loved the presentation and purchased a copy of his book about John Adams which he signed. I just love hearing these videos!
Those cannons went right through my hometown. My 5th ggf, Samuel Ellis was on duty one day at Bunker Hill when George Washington rode up on his horse. GW pulled out his eye-glass and was watching the movements of the British while the cannon were being planted. He then handed the eye-glass with a characteristic familiarity over to my 5th ggf so that he may view the movements of the British after which quite a conversation followed between a humble soldier and the father of our country.
Absolutely. But he's been given sort-shrift because of his consistency between conscience and actions. "All men are created equal" -- except those who aren't. He gives a terrific speech about Adams at the "John Adams Institute" in Holland/the Netherlands -- also available on youtube.
Unlike most academic historians, McCullough was an English major at Yale and I think it really shows in his work. He narrates history for what it is, linked stories rather than disputations. He is such an amazing story teller. 1776 and John Adams are 10/10 for sure.
This gentleman is a master of storytelling, and his passion on the subject shines through..as Americans, we should be very proud & show this kind of passion and realize just what sacrifice it took to give birth to the greatest country on Earth..sorry..that's what it is..thank u David!
@@DouglasShane1 There's a great many of us who try to live up to the ideals we hold as important but the bad examples get the attention..problem with the world today..not just our country
And so David McCullough leaves our earthly drawing rooms and sacred libraries of congress to take up his rightful chair in the celestial alma mater alongside the likes of Plutarch, Tacitus and Macaulay.
I’ve read his John Adams book and 1776. Enjoyed both, particularly 1776, which I’ve reread a couple of times. Enthralling. Edit - I live in NYC, go to the library all the time, it is not ‘private’ to my knowledge. Not sure what he means, anyone can go in anytime!
Probably the most in-depth and greatest lectures by David McCollough on his book, _1776_ . He captures history as no other historian has! In Volume 2 of his biography on Washington, Washington Irving states that, on June 16th, 1775, George Washington received word from the Second Continental Congress of its unanimous decision to appoint him as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army (Irving, Washington, Stein, Jess M] _Life of George Washington_ 1:109 Tarrytown, New York, 1975) John Adams wrote in his diary that, he proposed Washington "a gentleman, whose skill and experience as an officer, whose independent fortune, great talents, and excellent universal character, would command the approbation of all America, and unite the cordial exertions of all the colonies better than any person in the Union." (L.H. Butterfield, et. al., eds., _Diary and Autobiography of John Adams_ , 4 vols.[Cambridge, Mass., 1961], 3:322-23 GW was unanimously chosen general by ballot on 15 June (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904-37. description ends, 2:91).
Because they lacked the teaching skills , and imaginations, that kids love small details , they hate the big boring sweeping presentation ..... they want to know what musket ball does to your skull ....ect .
So unfortunate our Founding Fathers were slave owners. I'm a white Republican male. I must say, there was no excuse for slavery, at any time in the history of man. I love my country and her story but I must say, as smart as they were, as brave as they were, our founding fathers should be ashamed. 💔💔😥😥😥😥😥
Not all founding fathers were slave owners at all. In fact most if not all the New Englanders were vehemently opposed to slavery. Prime example is John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams. David's book on Adams explores this in great detail .
I hear our moder n millionaire public servants in office speak of the " intentions of our F.F.". If our F.F. could witness the times of our modern American life, once they regain their senses from the shock of not only the financial aspect of today, they'd, I feel would vomit repearedly, from the stretch of the u embarrassed corruptiin!!

What about Tom Petty?
Normally I read books vs listen to audiobooks, but I love listening to David’s voice and his storytelling so much I do his books via audiobook.
David McCullough is a national treasure.

Love this lecture on the Greatest Generation of Americans ever.
We need a memorial to John and Abgail Adams in this country.
Oh, we couldn't do that today!!! What are you thinking! :(
We have; it's called "The United States of America."
There is a Adam's Memorial in DC. Sadly most of America has no Idea who Abigail Adams is.

An American treasure, David McCullough, has just passed away. He was a great writer and historian and an inspiring speaker. He will be missed.
David Mccullough is a brilliant narrator.
Six years of research for John Adams.

What a model we set for the world😇

David McCullough's Book's And Speech's Are Set There In American History.
A historian you can always trust, and what a gentleman.
He truly was an American treasure.
Very great! I hope all historians are able to produce such wonderful books to educate the people all around the world.
This is incredible to hear. I have read a couple of his books. They are the best!
He makes history come alive! 🇺🇸
Thank you!

Excellent as always -- but what happened to the recording at 56:50 to the Abigail Adams quotation???

To think when in school I thought these stories boring... only compulsory education can make such excitement seem dull.

Im sure we will be ashamed of ourselves 250 years from now too. Meaning, we can only do as well as we know how.
It was the Hand of GOD- and anyone saying otherwise Has forgotten he is the creator of this world-
Having said that, I love love
