Its not her being hated, but the kind of story, her character in Ashes of Love.she caused so much chaos and even her loved ones gets killed because of her.all she can do is to cry, she cannot even decide for herself, thats why she is being hated on.

Oh the number 1 is soooo true for me. Like I hated him sooo sooo so much. There are few characters in Chinese dramas I have hated that much. Like I couldn’t even really feel bad for him. Like if I felt bad for him at all it would have maybe been like meh okay. But like his acting was on point. Most I don’t like because they are annoying like overly stupid or whiny female leads but no 1 was the worst

Concubine Lin from The Story of Ming Lan was such a manipulative, self centered, two faced, green tea, murderer. But she would never have been so damaging to others if Ming Lan's father was even a slightly better person (stronger, more caring, paid attention, whatever).
Of course, another reason we hate Lin so much, is that Ming Lan spent so long (and so many episodes) being abused by her, seeking the truth, and then setting up her revenge.
And WHAT a revenge! Such a beautiful setup, she let Lin and her daughter walk to their own doom, slowly planting ideas and opening doors, but THEY made the choices to walk through them. Ming Lan (or her proxys) warned them again and again, don't make that bad choice. Ultimately, they were punished for things they actually did, that they wanted to do.
And then Ming Lan went on to have an amazing life. She didn't dwell on past injustices, but it did color her future. That experience taught her to use the slow manipulation, let them willing choose the bad path, make all paths lead to victory.
She was so smart. Everyone in the capital thought she was the most gentle, the most obedient... Until she closed the trap. And even then, half the time they never knew it was her.
I love that show. Such smart writing. Yes, the beginning is super slow (and the first few episodes aren't as good). But every episode builds on itself. Ming Lan learns something that she uses later on. So worth the time and effort!!
I think about Lin Xinshuan in the same way than Big Madam Wang think about her sometimes: I even admire her LOL but in this show there are three more females whom are worthy to being mentioned: Zhu Manniang, Big Madam Kang and Big Madam Qin ❤ they are very bloody females indeed lol

It's often said that strong bad guys make the good guys even better. Certainly true here. Ming Lan and Gu Tingye are better characters because they have to overcome such incredible bad guys.
Each of the bad guys in this story were not just ruthless and dangerous, but also unique in their motivation and method (their way of taking action); nobody was interchangeable. All the characters were so well written.
Speaking of well developed characters, after thinking about it for some time (and after several re-watches), I think there are 3 characters that are a 'reflection' of each other. They are Ming Lan, the Emperor (the later one), and Grand Madam Gu. While they have much in common, two become heroes (are good guys), but one is a villain.
Not sure if I can get my idea across about how they are alike... To some extent, each person hides who they truly are. They appear to be slightly stupid, good natured, easy going, and agreeable, who have issues making decisions; but they are actually very intelligent, have a core of steel, and should never be crossed when it really matters.
For example, (paraphrasing what the Prince once said early on about his father) 'he doesn't make the decisions I would, he always seems to choose the safe decision, which is frustrating; but he has managed to survive thus far, and in his place, I would have gotten the family killed'.
Ming Lan hid her intelligence and personality to survive her family and Concubine Lin,
the Emperor hid his strength to survive the royal family fight for power,
Grand Madam Lin hid her vindictiveness, hate, ambition, etc to enable her to marry into the Gu family, then manipulate them, and destroy all those in her and her son's way.
Whatever, and whoever, they would have been without the threat of discovery is still there below the surface, but it's automatically suppressed, and not the face they present to the world.
Some people saw through their act(s), but most did not. Ming Lan's Grandmother was shocked when she realized her personality was all an act, and her father was quite surprised. So was the Empress Dowager by the Emperor. And Grand Madam Gu lamented her own life of hiding at her death.
It's interesting to think about their similarities and differences, especially because Ming Lan could have become something like the villain of Grand Madam Gu. But she didn't.
Anyway, I hope that made sense and is interesting for you too. Again, such great writing. Characters to remember.
