UAV/Drone 4K Views of Peachtree Street - Dawn & Dusk (Atlanta Skylines from Buckhead to Downtown)

  • Aerial views (via UAVs/drones) of Atlanta’s historic Peachtree Street/Road, which runs through the center of the city and anchors its three primary, in-town commercial districts (downtown, midtown, and Buckhead).
    At the southern end, Peachtree Street starts at Five Points, and it terminates in Brookhaven (a couple miles north of Lenox mall), though its name changes to Peachtree "Road" in Buckhead.
    This 8.5 minute video includes aerial footage from Brookhaven to the northern edge of downtown (roughly 0.75 miles from Five Points), and it is comprised of two distinct sections:
    (1) 4.5 minutes of individual aerial shots from multiple angles/speeds/directions (each of which last approximately 4 seconds) along Peachtree Street, starting near Brookhaven and concluding downtown; followed by
    (2) 4 minutes tracing the same north-to-south route through 5 extended and smoother shots.
    All the included shots have time compression between roughly 200% and 3,600%. Most flights were conducted below 10mph for purposes of safety and filming.
    The music is a highly edited (arguably defaced) version of Aftonland, a piano piece by French piano composer Niels Mori. My edits were in service of the video, and almost certainly undermine the composition’s inherent balance and beauty. I strongly encourage anyone interested to seek one of Mori’s original recordings of the piece, which are near perfection and can be found at niels1.bandcamp.com/album/aftonland

      Indeed, Buckhead’s skyline is meaningfully less identifiable than Midtown or Downtown. Most of its reflective-glass, curtain-wall-design towers would be equally at home in Houston, Phoenix, or Orange County, CA.

    I'll admit I didn't realize Atlanta was this long but at the same time it really isn't that dense. Based on what I saw from this video, it really seems like the Atlanta skyline is just mainly centered along one main road, with some decent sized buildings on each side and the occasional skyscraper. Decent skyline that's comparable to other small skylines like Houston or LA, but if you want to see a real skyline come up here to Chicago!!

    • @batteryplum
      @batteryplum  7 років тому +5

      Without a doubt, Atlanta's skyline doesn't rival that of Chicago, a city that pioneered many of the engineering techniques underlying skyscraper construction. During the heyday of pedestrian-centered city construction, (1880-1950), Chicago became one of the nation's principal centers of commerce and innovation, and it built a skyline to match its importance. Conversely, until at about 1950, Atlanta was just modest-sized, regional transportation and banking hub. Prior to air conditioning, most large corporations were reluctant to locate their headquarters in the southern united states, regardless of the significantly reduced labor and real estate costs. By the time Atlanta's population began to grow at a rapid clip (1950-2000: 400% growth in MSA pop.), city construction was conforming to (arguably being deformed by) the automobile, resulting in a diffuse skyline, scattered along a 10-mile stretch on or near Peachtree Street (with some notable exceptions). All that being said, it's a very livable (and, at times, quite lovely) city with excellent, welcoming people. Perhaps its skyline will be comparable to Chicago's in another 50 years. Stay tuned.

    • @rjayerge930
      @rjayerge930 7 років тому

      Ben Fox thank you for the interesting history, I figured there would be a good reason to the unique design of Atlanta's infrastructure. Atlanta in a way does remind me of a baby version of Chicago's "gold coast" skyline, which is pretty much the skyline that extends behind the John Hancock stretching towards Wisconsin.

    • @batteryplum
      @batteryplum  5 років тому

      @@cruzechevy3485 A few more years are warranted before revisiting Atlanta's skyline (at least Buckhead, Midtown, and downtown). Since this footage was shot in 2015-2016, I believe only 1 new building over 500 ft. tall (Icon Midtown at the corner of 14th and West Peachtree) has been completed. That being said, there are numerous new buildings between 300 and 500 ft. tall throughout the Atlanta metro area.

    This is incredibly smooth footage and I notice that you don't mention the specifications of the drone? Can you let us in on what model you used? Also how did you control it over such long distances and heights?

    • @batteryplum
      @batteryplum  7 років тому +2

      Greg: Thanks for the comment. Most of this footage was captured with modified Phantom 3 (Advanced with after-market gimbal and GoPro H3+ Black) and Phantom 4 models, both of which are pretty smooth in low-wind environments (though it's nearly impossible to turn them without some tremor). In my experience, smoothness can generally be improved by dialing down stick sensitivity as low as possible, keeping the UAV's speed extremely low (before accelerating in post-production), and being prepared to shoot the same sequence at least half a dozen times (discarding all the shots destroyed by wind and operator error). With respect to distance, I make an effort to find locations where line-of-sight can be maintained (standing on top of my truck if necessary) and wireless interference is absent, and I sometimes use after-market, super-bright LED lights, which add weight but aid in tracking the UAV at a great distance with the naked eye. I hope this answers your questions, but let me know if anything is unclear.

    • @juanh1093
      @juanh1093 4 роки тому

      @@batteryplum Ben this is superior! But what's the furthest you flown with this drone? You flew a Phantom? Can you confirm whether this is a hyperlapse or video? If it is video did you fly in 60fps?

    • @batteryplum
      @batteryplum  4 роки тому

      @@juanh1093 Most of this was shot with a Phantom 4 (though portions used a Phantom 3 Advanced). This is a video, not a hyperlapse. The vast majority was shot in 4K at the highest frame rate available on the Phantom 4 at the time (I cannot recall if it was 30, 48, or 60). Because I wasn't slowing down the video, the frame rate wasn't that important to me at the time. For the most part, I operated the UAVs extremely slow and flew in as windless environments as I could. Given that slow movement and how fast I accelerated some of the footage during the editing process, I can see how certain shots could appear to be hyperlapse. For instance, there are shots in this video that lasted nearly an entire battery and occupy only 3-5 seconds in the video.

I recognize that the two-part structure (i.e., individual staccato shots moving north-to-south from Buckhead to Downtown, followed by a few extended shots along the same route) isn't entirely intuitive, and I initially considered breaking it up into two videos. Thanks for the comment, and I hope you enjoy your Mavic (when it finally arrives). As the title frame of this video indicates, the footage it contains was captured during entirely recreational flights in 2015 and early 2016. As a result, those flights may not conform to the more specific and generally more rigorous regulations on commercial UAV/UAS operation promulgated in recent years or subsequently released rules on recreational flights. Though I have a backlog of older in-town footage I'll be editing and may be posting in the months ahead, over the last six months, I've turned my attention to collecting new aerial footage of Atlanta's parks, local rivers/lakes, and the Beltline. As a result, I'm not fully versed in the latest limitations on recreational UAV/UAS operation over the city and its roadways. Sorry I cannot provide more guidance in this respect. Shoot me an email (fox @bmelaw.com) if you post video from your Mavic.

    Wow .... this city is surrounded by a forest

      Yep, Atlanta has a rich tree canopy (giving it the nickname "city in a forest") that provides shade and actually keeps the ambient temperature down in the summer months.

    definitely has a smaller downtown proper than either Dallas or Houston, but it has a nicely distributed cityscape of modern buildings unlike Houston that has really separated skylines.

      Reed, you are correct regarding Houston's more robust skyline, but my impression (having spent time in all three cities) is that Dallas has the least developed business district of the three cities. All three cities suffer from experiencing their primary development after the dominance the automobile and having no natural barriers (e.g., large bodies of water) to expansion. While both Dallas and Atlanta developed as early railroad and banking centers, Atlanta's relatively steady growth outstripped Dallas following WWII partially because it had no serious regional rivals in the southeast U.S. (whereas Dallas was increasingly in the shadow of Houston, a city that experienced nearly unprecedented growth fueled by oil-price inflation starting in the early 1970s).

      Joe: I take your point. During the relevant period, I was experimenting with variable time compression techniques to manipulate the perceived physics of the shots. In retrospect, the result may have been more disorienting than I intended at points. Notably, this video was uploaded in 4K, 60 fps; so I invite you to adjust the speed (in your UA-cam settings) to 0.75 or 0.5, which will make the camera movements less pronounced. Thanks for the note. -Ben Fox

      Carolyn, you make a good point. I recognize that the the editing techniques I experimented with in some of this video (e.g., speed ramping) aren't for everyone. Notably, if you haven't viewed the entire video, the second half of it (starting at about the 4:33 mark) includes longer, unbroken aerial shots with less acceleration.
