He is one of the world's leading Ukrainian historians. He did not "escape" anywhere but worked in Soviet Ukraine and was invited to work in the west as part of an academic exchange in the 1990s. rather than "escape" he has kept constant contact and visits to Ukraine and promotes the knowledge of Ukraine and its history and culture on the world stage, especially to the enormous English-speaking audience.
This gentleman is a cheerleader, it’s impossible for him to be objective. No I’m not Russian & my opinion is neither side is worth the powder & shot it would take to blow them both to hell.
This author is crazy… he escapes the ‘war zone’ and lives happily in the West, with now a protected job at Harvard. What do you think he is going to say. I find his thoughts offensive. What person in their right mind would facilitate a war with a super power?? Safely opining from a comfy job in the West, he thinks it is normal to loose the several generations of a countries’ peoples. The Ukraine has been sold (lands) and it’s peoples have sold out to the West. Responsible leadership would have found a way for Ukraine to function as a buffer state to the super power. This guy is going to be seen on the wrong side of history, a term his handlers love to use.

That intro is too long
Whether his book is an accurate account of the events before and after the Russian and Ukraine war, at least his job at the university would be safe.

He is also biased and inaccurate in many of his analyses (as bias tends to do even with historians.)

@@liquidus Point is: it's easy to be absolutist and patriotic when it's not your skin in the game.
@BlueBottle Makes sense. And if one has a skin in the game, what changes then?
@@liquidus what changes is that one becomes more pragmatic and willing to compromise when said skin is in the game.
