    This is Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy, set on the Western Front from July to September 1944. One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea). You can find out more about Combat Mission by visiting www.battlefront.com and especially the forums.

    If this was Enter the Soviets there’d be no town left, five empty batteries of 122mm howitzers, the Germans would take 90% casualties (despite no Soviet scout ever successfully making a spot), and the Soviets would lose 13 tanks and two entire companies of infantry.
    Still a Total Victory though because there were nine more companies loitering in spawn after the player suffered a sprained finger pressing Pause and drawing Quick Moves.

    One problem i have when switching between the brits and the americans in cm is that i tend to be over confident wifh the americans.. i know i have superior squad firepower and am too likely to throw them into situations above their head while with the brits i tend to have the oposite and be way too safe and slow. I do find that the other area the americans do well in is that they are less susceptible to bad luck. The loss of a bar is bad but once a british or german squad loses their mg they become very weak. In that way a damaged us squad might still have most of its firepower where as a single german mg might have most of their squads power still but if a brit or german squad takes an unlucky hit and loses their mg i almost write off that squad until i hopefully budy aid it back😅

      Remember that IRL, if a german Gruppe lost its MG, the Gruppe was disolved and members splitted to reinforce other gruppe.

    Worth pointing out that the US 60mm Mortar was supposed to be used at the Company level, whereas the 2-inch Mortar was supposed to be used at the Platoon level.
    Interestingly the French planned to have the best of both worlds, using the 60mm Modele 1935 Mortar (of which the US M2 was a licence-built copy) at the Company level, and planned to use the Lance-Grenade 50mm Modele 1937 at the Platoon level, although France fell before this weapon could be widely issued.

    Well it’s as the old WW2 saying goes
    “If you come upon a group of unknown soldiers fire a single shot
    If it responds with a hail of machine gun fire, it’s German
    If it throws up its hands and surrenders its Italian
    If it responds with a hail of accurate and deadly rifle fire its British
    If nothing happens and your position is obliterated by artillery fire, it’s American.”

    I appreciate the effort made for this video. I absolutely adore the 60mm mortar in general even in modern titles but for BfN it's probably even more favored to my mind because of the terrain faced in Normandy. I kinda wish using indirect fire utilizing a nearby officer with LOS to target worked as it does in CMx1 without the need for the artillery call-in window. You can use the target command slightly behind crests without an FO, sure, but it feels like you need to be closer to the crest than one would think (or care to be) and kinda dodgy as a mechanic as a result.

    Very interesting. I have found the extra smoke loadout on the British 2" mortar extremely useful before now. Depends on the particular nut you are trying to crack as to which is 'better' perhaps?

  • @David-rs4po
    @David-rs4po 8 місяців тому +6

    This is very interesting. You managed to modify one of the campaign missions. That's a tough nut to get into as someone who has tried modding CM a lot. The Road to Cheux was an interesting choice. I honestly think the main difference was that you had a worthwhile mortar.

    I feel like the BAR v. Bren comparison is a bit more, exaggerated in commentary than it really is. Yes the Bren is better, it's not *that* much better though, especially in comparison to a belt fed machinegun, and sometimes the US squads have more than one BAR, and the Bren is not better than two BARs.

    "I never use British 2" mortars because they only fire smoke".
    You really, really should. The smoke round for the 2" mortar was White Phosphorus. As were the smoke rounds for all the British CS tanks (3",3.7" and 95 mm). You don't see the historians talk about it much (Hague Convention, chivalry etc.) but the fighting troops fully understood the value of chucking WP at targets in the open.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  8 місяців тому +5

      WP simply isn't as effective as HE, it's an insant obscruant that happens to work via an aggressive incendiary effect. That's not to say that getting WP on you isn't going to ruin your day, more that someone beyond the splatter radius of a 2in WP bomb is going to get shredded by shrapnel from a 2in HE bomb.

    • @MandolinMagi
      @MandolinMagi 8 місяців тому +1

      There is absolutely zero legal problems with throwing WP at people. It's legally smoke per absolutely everyone, and even if it was classed as incendiary there is again zero legal problem. Some nations' specific regulations might forbid it (the US does not), but even then nobody is going to care that the smoke mission landed on bad guys.
      WP is according to everyone who matters a smoke munition with secondary incendiary properties. The toxic effects people whine about ("chemical weapon") are so long-term you might as well complain that people are using lead-cored bullets

    • @samb2052
      @samb2052 8 місяців тому +2

      The 2” smoke bombs I fired were never WP. That said, they provide a better screen than WP because the smoke isn’t hot and doesn’t rise. HE should be available for 2” during WW2, along with illum. HE was discontinued afterwards until the 51mm replaced the 2” around 1990.

With those as the foundation, this really is a brilliant addition; I appreciate it may have been intended as a one-off, but I'd be very enthused to see more of them to explore the nuanced differences between equipment, doctrine, force structure, etc.

    If you had played the first mission of the campaign with the Americans and suffered fewer casualties, how big of a difference would it have made in the mission?

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  8 місяців тому +3

      It's hard to say how much easier Mission 2 would have been if I'd done better in Mission 1- the sticky parts would probably be the same because they're that tactical problem of clearing buildings and having extra bodies isn't necessarily going to help with that.

  • @MilesStratton
    @MilesStratton 8 місяців тому +1

    The biggest issue with the British 2 inch mortar isnt the mortar itself but the ammunition load assigned to it. There should be a huge amount of 2 inch HE and smoke in the trucks accompanying the British units to draw from, but sadly they simply aren't available and it really limits the british rifle platoons tactical options.
    Just another side effect of cm being a niche title with a small dev team and long dev cycle. Stuff like this slips thru the cracks all the time.

    I'm a recent returnee to CM (I used to play Barbarossa a lot) and I've been struggling with unit commands - for the life of me I can't get individual squads to follow an order, instead I find them following a route set for another team which almost always leads them into difficulty.

    How did you change the units from British to Americans?

  • @kgb613
    @kgb613 8 місяців тому +1

    US forces are far better suited as a squad can fight back a german MG, while the british will probably be pinned down. To fight the german, the british needs more men compared to the US. Other thing is that historically, the british armoured forces didn't like the M2 cal. 50, which is a super asset on US tank. Even not being armoured as a Churchill, or powerfull as 95mm CS or 17 pounder gun, the US M4 Sherman are good for everything. The US infantey is from my point better suited for everything. Maybe the only thing they will struggle more than the british counterpart is the antitank capacity, bazooka is less powerfull than PIAT.

    • @MandolinMagi
      @MandolinMagi 8 місяців тому

      Properly the US 105mm Sherman would be the counterpart of the Churchill 95mm.
      Also the bazooka should be on par with PIAT power-wise. PIAT was nominally 100mm but realistically 75mm. Bazooka had M6A1 rounds with 76mm pen, replaced by Normandy with M6A3s with 100mm pen. M6A5 with 125mm pen showed up....eventually? There's also M6A3C with super-sensitive fuze which might increase pen a bit but again I can't figure out when they showed up.
      In any case, bazooka is far more accurate and long-ranged than PIAT. Backblast is IMO overrated and PIAT has some nasty recoil and doesn't always recock itself
