The "sunk cost fallacy" was a revelation to me when I finally accepted that the money was already wasted when I made the purchase. Passing the items on was cathartic and helped me move past that particular roadblock. Plus, it was a learning experience each time. What a fantastic attitude your dad has about sending items on to their new homes as well.

First time viewer. Liked this video. I emptied my parents house 6 yrs ago and my dad’s senior apt 4 yrs ago. Not one grandchild wanted any of their stuff. I kept a tea cup set my brother kept tools. After both of these huge jobs I came home to my husband and said, “ we will not do this to our kids!” We have declutterred about 75% of our stuff… 2000 books, we read almost everything digital or use library now, a college was thrilled to get my husbands theology books, 42 bins of Christmas to one bin and a 4ft tree. I love everything we kept and the time I save cleaning, dusting, storing has freed me up so much.
@@CassieW-97 You don’t just get 1 gold star! You get 5 GOLD STARS! What an incredible accomplishment especially on your holiday items and books. I always loved to declutter but after having to deal with the contents of my grandma’s and dad’s houses, I had the same epiphany as you did. My kids and my sister’s kids took things like one scarf or a sweater and the rest, we had estate sales and donated. I just like less to manage in general. Please subscribe if you haven’t already. I have a large game room that I have been using as a storage shed for too many years. It looks like a hoarder’s nightmare. I dream of using that room for home Bible study groups and large family gatherings. I have stumbled upon something that truly helps me with decluttering it. Every time I walk into that room for a decluttering session I say out loud, “Nothing in this room is more important than the people I want to have over!” That declaration really helps me with purging the sentimental stuff because instead of stressing about keeping the old memories I’m focusing on the new memories I want to create in this space. ❤️
@@shutterbugkc I absolutely love that and it is so true. No possession is more important than people! Filling that room with people enjoying each other’s company outweighs the clutter any day of the week! Good for you to come up with such a good way to motivate yourself. I’m sure you will make it happen with that kind of mindset. 🥰💕
@@goulash64 oh thank you so much! My daughter bought me the shirt I wore and the mic would not cooperate so I thought what can I use and my spatula spoon won. 😂🌸
Thank you. I'm going through this right now. The hardest stuff to get rid of are the items that have a family back story to it that is precious. But you're right, our kids do NOT want our crap (their words for it).
@@deborahdevane6330 I love it! One thing that helps me when I’m decluttering is the concept that every item I own also owns me - because I have to maintain, clean, dust, or store it. So, when I’m deciding whether to keep, donate or toss an item, I ask myself, “Do I really want to be owned by this item?” Usually, the answer is a clear Yes! Or No!
@@gailwhite8796 I love that Gail! Thanks for sharing that thought. It better be worth all the effort if you keep something, because you are so right things can own you and not the other way around. I used to struggle with the yes or no thing. Often times, I would try to justify something when I knew it was a clear no. 🌺💕
@@terrihubbard1437 I’m so glad! I understand how kids don’t want brown furniture…it’s not their color maybe but my white dishes did surprise me. @@MyBlessedNest I’m the same as you! I struggle sometimes with an item even though I know the answer…I will try to justify it. An example is an old handbag I sold this year. I still do NOT regret it. I hope you subscribed because I’ll be posting a new video every Friday at 2:45pm. Today is Friday. 💕🎉🌸 All the best, Bren
@@ReginaChristenson I lost my dad a few years ago and his voice is often in my head when I’m trying to figure something out. I love that saying, too! 🥰
My community has a garage sale once a year in the spring. I am decluttering and pricing as I go, using my son’s old bedroom (he recently bought his own home) as a storage unit until the sale. In the spring, everything will be priced and ready to go. Knowing I will make a little money back is helping me part with things and my husband and I have already agreed that whatever does not sell gets donated to the thrift shop.
@@livingthedream923 Such a SMART idea to use your son’s old room to store the stuff you’ve decided to sell. I love that idea because you can just close the door and it’s not invading your living space. It’s awesome your husband is on board with donating afterwards. You’ve given me a great idea: price as you go. With as many sales as I’ve done, I have never priced as I go, but I sure will do that going forward! Thank you so much! Every Friday, I’ll be putting out a new video. If you have any suggestions as to what you’d like to hear about, feel free to let me know! All the best, Bren 🌸💕
I find when my community has a garage sale, I don't sell very much. Too much competition! I create my own garage sale and put ads up online. hang a few signs, and be prepared to start very early. Then I sell a lot.
I added personal photos. I am of the era when pictures were printed. I had 20 albums of pictures that got heavy if I had to pack them and move plus they only gave me something else to dust. I pulled out 5 of the most significant periods, happy periods, and dumped the rest. My family does not want pictures of me upon my demise. And work binders, I had a 20 plus year career as a financial consultant and I still had all the binders related to that career, I dumped those as well. Now, if item reminds me of the past, I dump it because it is distracting me from the dear precious present. Thank you for sharing your experience.
@@Prodrig817 oh I just LOVE what you shared! I think those photos can be a burden. I completely get it. When my grandma passed away, I inherited all the pictures. Early this past year, I put them in albums and it was honestly depressing, but at the same time, something very good came to me. I thought to myself that all these distant relatives (great, great grandparents etc) are all gone and they have no more opportunities to live their best lives. In that moment, I decided to make sure I remember that and live my best life. I’m glad you parted ways with things that didn’t make you feel good or gave you bad vibes/feelings! Who needs that stuff! GOOD FOR YOU! ❤️🥰🌸
@@downsizetoupsize thank you for your kind words. It took courage and acceptance that the life I lead was excellent because I worked really hard to make it so, but it didn’t turn out like I thought it would. I appreciate the mention that the photos kept are the ones that make me feel good. It takes valor, to move on, while there is life to live. Viva the current life! 🎉
I just spent two nights at a friend’s home specifically so we could go through pictures. We’ve been friends for 50 years so many life experiences overlap for us. We swapped some family pictures and laughed about old school pictures, etc. Biggest thing was, she emptied 2 large bins and I emptied one.
@ Congratulations 🎉 I had to do it by spurts because the emotions that came up to the surface were painful to process all at once. Then I realized the albums were more of a burden or distraction like something I still have to get to. For example, a book that I haven’t finished reading yet. That gave me the energy to push through the emotions that were weighing me down.
I take a picture of the item I don’t need anymore. I had luggage, the old kind without wheels that my parents had given me as a HS graduation gift. We stored those pieces for years just because of the sentimental factor. Finally I took pictures of the luggage inside and out and let them go. Having pictures is just as sentimental and makes it easy for me to let go of stuff.
@@GBev7 What a great point. You don’t need the physical item to have the good memories associated with it and taking pictures of it is absolutely just as good! It might even be better because it’s so much easier to access pictures. Happy you let that luggage go! Good for you! 💕🎉

Very good advice as I’m going through my own downsizing and decluttering process! It is so hard to sell clothing for cheap or give it away knowing how I much i spent on it. But the lesson is to maybe stop buying so much stuff lol! Thank you for all of these great tips!!
You can do it! It will feel so good to have only the things you love in your closet and it will leave room for new things that make you feel like a million bucks when you wear them. If you sell clothes on eBay, sometimes you can get more $ listing them as a "lot" in the same sizes/styles. Also, you would be amazed what you can get for vintage clothes these days, ESPECIALLY brands like Gap. If you have anything that is over 20 years old, check Poshmark and eBay before donating or selling at a garage sale.😍 90's & early 2000's thrifting is a real thing.

The doozy on your list - keeping something bc you spent good money on it is a tough one for me. We still have two platters that I insisted we needed that have spent 29 years in their original boxes! Love the clear bin/shelving and tip of buying your containers after you’ve decluttered.

Here are two tips that have helped me declutter. 1) Set a timer. Somehow if my brain knows in advance that the difficult task is limited to a short time, I'm much more efficient. 2) Ask for help. Good tipps. Love them. Even though I'm still in the beginning of my journey, I do prefer to buy bins out of a line up from a name brand or in a standard*. Reasons: 1) I can buy more, when I need them, even years after my first purchase 2) I need them in different sizes and with all of them being the exact same design, it's still not to cluttered and they stay stackable (I stick to 2 sizes lenght* width and 2 sizes hight). *standard: I live in Europe and there is a standard "Eurobox."

I love you calm vibe. I'm excited to have found you and learn more about how to downsize and declutter...even though I don't meet your 40 and above criteria, but it is essentially impossible to find anything about downsizing that doesn't imply that you have to be of a certain age, it just feels exclusionary, like I'm not allowed to want to better my life until I reach a certain age.

That was manageable and got me on a roll to tackle the closets. I would always tell family and friends please don't buy me anymore cloths or Nick knacks. How many shirts or pants should a person own ? Not that many that you only end up wearing the shirt once a year. Too much ( stuff ) causes me terrible anxiety, plus my family was not honoring my request, which added to my anxiety. I like neatness and order and it seems they would load me with stuff they didn't want. I'm feeling so much better knowing I regained control over my clutter situation.
@carolsipala1639 I’m so happy for you that you regained control. I’m right with you on your point about having too much stuff & it causing anxiety. I think your family has great intentions and they don’t want you to feel left out when gift giving occurs. Have you tried asking them to give you consumable gifts vs physical items? That way, they can still gift your something, but it won’t stick around your house forever. You’re right, how many pants or shirts do we need. I regretted decluttering something once but it’s not what you think. Etsy sells these lovely art prints and I purchased and printed one for holiday decor. It was an 8 x 10 frame. I decluttered the frame with the Christmas print in it. Later, I remembered that my children’s and families past photos were behind that print. I specifically remember leaving them in there. I went back to goodwill to rebuy it or at least open it up to remove the personal photos, but it was gone.

Asking your kids if they want something or not is a tricky one. Depends on their moment in life. My mother asked me if I wanted the Christmas decoration my father had made himself in younger years ( he was a glass blower) when I was at University. Of course I didn't, living in a one bedroom appartment, so she gave that unique stuff away. Guess who regrets it now every winter. Also: reduce plastic!!! You may as well store everything in pretty cardboard boxes, you label everything anyway.
@@berits.2346 I totally agree with you on the stages of life your kids are in. That is a good point. 🎉 Back in the day…I tried to use cardboard boxes but the weight of items would often cause them to be unstable or they got dented or crushed over time when the cardboard would get worn out. When I come across something I am on the fence about, I leave it out and visible. So when I walk past it or have to walk around it or trip on it, I am aware of it and I have a reaction to it. More often it is "Why don't I just get rid of that?" and it makes it easier to put it in the donate box (or trash). If I just put it back in the closet or in its box, it will just continue to exist as hidden clutter. And continue to "own" me by its presence. This forces a decision.

I have the most trouble getting rid of stuff given to me by family. Recently, I asked them not to give me anything I couldn't eat or drink or blow up. Brenda- what is your opinion on estate sales? We had a huge one 10 years ago when we moved into our house bc the elderly man who sold us the house left stuff he did not want. The estate sale was a success, but he had left mostly tools and equipment. I recently got an email from the estate sale company that we worked with those 10 years ago and they said they are no longer conducting estate sales. The company said that people no longer want to buy dishes and housewares, etc., which seem to be a majority of what people have to sell at an estate sale. I was disappointed to hear that trend but I guess it makes sense. Most everyone has the dishes, etc, that they already need. Are estate sales still popular in your area? What do you think about estate sales? My Mom and Dad have a house filled with dishes and servingware and knick knacks, etc. My Mom, at 81, will not part with anything or downsize or do any meaningful decluttering. While my Mom is still in excellent physical and mental shape, I wish she would see that she only uses a fraction of all of her stuff. Sorry to ramble here... back to the topic! I was hoping to use an estate sale service to help clear the house when she eventually passes. But if estate sales are no longer popular for selling housewares, then should I just donate everything to a thrift store? I won't throw out these items because they are in good shape and can be used by others..... Thanks for your opinion, Brenda!
@@Shelly_B Hey Shelly! WHAT A GREAT QUESTION! I love going to estate sales here in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area with a few of my kids who are in their 20’s. They are always on the lookout for unique items. They love thrifting more than shopping in a store and that is very common in their age group. This includes furniture, dishes, clothes, handbags etc. It’s not me dragging them to these sales…it’s their idea for sure. All their friends do it, too. Trust me, it’s a whole thing with this generation. I think the main problem with an estate sale run by a service versus an individual is the price of the items. The estate sale company splits the sale total with the owner of the items and that means they charge a lot more than an individual running their own sale. You won’t be able to convince your parents to downsize now it sounds like, so unless they come around to the idea, I would just enjoy the time you have with them and worry about the rest when you need to. 🥰 Here’s what I suggest when the time comes, go through your parent’s home and locate the most valuable items. Anything with a brand name is something you should check on. You can get a company like Everything But the House to just sell that stuff or sell it on eBay yourself and then you can do a massive estate sale yourself if you feel comfortable. The set up is honestly more easy than you think and you can invite people into the home to go room to room so you don’t have to put it all in a garage outside. You might even sell their home that way. You can list the sale yourself on a site called estatesales.com with pics of the best items. I had a guy come from Atlanta to get a clock from me when I did my dad’s estate sale. If you think you’d like to see a video on this topic, please let me know and I would be happy to do it. 🌸 Thank you so much for asking your question and if you haven’t already, please subscribe because I have so many more videos coming your way.
Whether your kids want your stuff depends on the stuff and your kids. Just ask them. I for my part collect vintage and antique items and I am so sad my grand parents and parents gave most of their older things away or even put them in the garbage. It actually hurts to think about it.
@@anon-mx4jx It absolutely makes all the difference if your kids want your stuff. You have a fondness for antiques and would’ve loved to receive something like that. I rarely regret decluttering anything and usually forget about the decluttered items very quickly! Great tips! 💓💓💓

That was so helpful! Thinking about "making someone's day" does make it easier to let go. You motivated me. The struggle is real.

Just putting this out here, though: Always ask your kids/grandkids if they want your stuff (like you did). There were certain things of my grandmother's that I wanted (including a ring she promised me when I was little), but most of her personal possessions disappeared after she died. Probably my uncles took them to the thrift shop. Thankfully, there were still plenty of mementos left when my family went to help clean out the house (including Grandma's wedding gown and Grandpa's Navy uniform from 1944!)...but it would have been nice if my uncles had waited until all the family could have a say. /RANT

Here are two tips that have helped me declutter. 1) Set a timer. Somehow if my brain knows in advance that the difficult task is limited to a short time, I'm much more efficient. 2) Ask for help. I helped a friend with purging her closet, and another time I hired a neighbor teenager. I did the sorting and purging and the teen did all the packing and carrying of donations to my car.
GREAT TIPS! I will try a timer, too. That's a good one!! I think sometimes if we have someone with us, it's just easier for some reason to declutter. Good tipps. Love them. Even though I'm still in the beginning of my journey, I do prefer to buy bins out of a line up from a name brand or in a standard*.
Reasons:
1) I can buy more, when I need them, even years after my first purchase
2) I need them in different sizes and with all of them being the exact same design, it's still not to cluttered and they stay stackable (I stick to 2 sizes lenght* width and 2 sizes hight).

YOU are ahead of the game!!! I LOVE IT! Good for you! I'm proud of you! It is so nice to encounter someone that understands the benefits of downsizing at a younger age. It took me a long time to dig in to declutter. I would have it in my head that on so and so day I would dig in. Well I got all pumped up but as soon as I opened a closet door to tackle it, I became suddenly overwhelmed and ended up closing the door. Eventually I started with decluttering a drawer.

The good news is I’ve had all my clear bins for about 15 years and none have broken. Yay!! I hope you subscribed because I’ll be posting a new video every Friday & I’d love for you to continue watching. Rumor has it that I might do a bonus video on Sunday if I can swing it. 🌸💕

All the best, Bren 💕🌸
When I come across something I am on the fence about, I leave it out and visible. So when I walk past it or have to walk around it or trip on it, I am aware of it and I have a reaction to it. More often it is "Why don't I just get rid of that?" and it makes it easier to put it in the donate box (or trash). If I just put it back in the closet or in its box, it will just continue to exist as hidden clutter. And continue to "own" me by its presence. This forces a decision.
@@EmerySand WOW!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 In all the years I have been decluttering, I have NEVER heard such a good tip! I absolutely love it and I am going to USE it! I have the most trouble getting rid of stuff given to me by family. Recently, I asked them not to give me anything I couldn't eat or drink or blow up. Also, I don't buy an item of clothing unless I get rid of two. Same with books. I read a book, then donate it, unless I loved it so much I want to read it again.

Would love a video on DIY estate sales!
It does just depend on the person. I think parents should always ask their kids, but if the kids say no….thats ok, too. Thanks so much for your comment. I hope you subscribed, because I’m doing a series on this topic. The video you just commented on is the first one and the next one in the series will be out this week regarding SENTIMENTAL items. Mom has a collection of Iris and Herringbone, but I am on the fence since I have my own teacups and cake stands. Maybe the granddaughters?

another alternative: Invite all your kids over on the same day. Ask them what they would like from the house, etc, have them write their name on a piece of tape and place in an inconspicuous place. when you're gone, thet take the item(s) and discard the rest.
@@aaronedmunds4829 What a great idea! My dad did something like that with me and my sister.
