Dave Casler is a super great guy and a good, patient teacher! I know because he is my big brother! I enjoy watching him "do his thing" for all of you ham-mers. I grew up hearing him talking to people world-wide late into the night. To this day, I can remember his old call number..."Whiskey bravo 6-golf bravo tango". Great memories!

I love Raspberry Pis while I am coming a 3d printing and general technology background over to ham radio. I am seeing I have even more excuses to buy them. They can handle low overhead tasks with such a small form factor and efficiency that they will fit almost any where... Can't wait to try them out here as well.

I have been active on FT8 for over 3 years. Bought a IC-7300 a year back and just received the HamPi and the 4B 8G Raspberry Pi. Connected USB configured FT8 out of the box and within 5 minutes had my first QSO. Outstanding, simple very cost effective way to get active on WSJTX, WSPR and other digital modes. G4PEY.
Extra. Found to be as good on FT8 as my i5 Dell. It is less prone to RFI than my desktop computer and keeps good time.

In linux, you should be able to install new versions of software by simply running the update procedure for the raspberry pi. I believe that Raspian (The Pi OS) is debian based. In this case, run sudo apt update. After this completes run sudo apt upgrade. This should update the versions. You may need to add repositories for each of these programs, but this is much easier and safer than burning a new image each time you need to update.

Great video! I love the raspberry pi, I still have the first model I pre ordered when they first announced it. It’s a great little machine, don’t be afraid of Linux it’s a great OS. It’s great to see Hams embracing technology like the Pi, there is a lot that can be done with it.

I downloaded HamPi and installed it on my Pi 4. While testing, I noticed my Pi was overheating and thermal throttling. I tracked the problem down to a program running in the background to donate cpu cycles for radio telescope research (all four cores were running at 100%). I sent an email to the author (W3DJS). I received a rather nasty reply "Read the license agreement. If you don't like HamPi, don't use it."
I read the licensing info and saw that it said the user must not disable the background processing nor the nagware screen at startup. While I agree that donating CPU cycles for scientific research is a noble cause, I believe that the Pi, with known overheating problems, is a poor platform for this use. In addition, I believe these restrictions violate the spirit of open source, if not the GPL itself.
Needless to say, I no longer use HamPi.

Windows users: Unfortunately W3DJS chose to use a Linux ".tar" archive instead of .zip for the rest of us. The free program "7Zip" can deal with a .tar archive. BalenaEtcher can then work with the HamPi_vX.X.img.xz file inside.

Dave - 1st, I think we were at BYU at the same time. I transferred in from Rexburg in 1974 and was class of 1976.
Now, for the meat... (for both Dave's)
Do you know if Ham Pi will this work on a Pi Zero? I have one around here somewhere and if it will I'll dig it up. It TINY and might be a good addition to my kit.
BTW, great name, Dave S! Tell your XYL the logo rocks! I'm really looking forward to having this in my station AND in my 72-hour kit.
Keep it up, Dave! Probably the best Ham channel on UA-cam! I direct all new hams here.

I'm not impressed with HamPi since none of the SDR radio apps seem to work! Another problem is if I wanted to install something else like Dump1090 or ADS-B there doesn't seem to be any way to do that. There is an Add/Remove software feature but it doesn't do anything! It looks like Skywave Linux would be a better choice.

If you enable sshd or a VNC server on this, you should *really* change the default password for the "pi" user and any other default users. If you are behind a home rputer/firewall, you're *probably* ok, but why make a hacker's job easier?

Tried HamPi and was unimpressed. To be fair, I never got anything working because my first try was setting up Direwolf and, upon finding out that there was no default configuration file, I closed it all up and re-inserted my KM4ACK Build-a-Pi SD card. If I have to hunt down a config file right off the bat, I'm not interested.
It's instructive that the developer hasn't tested on 'other' audio devices like your sound card dongle (which *will* work with Raspian, as long as the codec is recognized by Linux), only using more modern transceivers. If you're using a transceiver that doesn't have on-board digital connections (or a Signalink) you'll likely have problems setting up anything on a RPi, simply because of the way that Linux handles devices and the way that different programs report what the OS finds.
If this is your first exposure to Linux, then buckle up because while Linux isn't anything too scary, it ain't Windows. Folks who have been using Linux for a while (I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty Fawn) won't have any trouble but if you're a Windows user, Linux can be frustrating (as some of the comment questions show).
To be honest, I don't see much difference between HamPi and Build-a-Pi, except that HamPi is already built for you, while Jason's Build-a-Pi script allows you to choose what applications you want to install on top of the Raspian OS.

Great video Dave! I downloaded the unix tar file and used 7zip to extract it for windows. Once my new rasberry pi 4 shows up i can install it. Question...if I install this onto the card that has the rasberry pi o/s and boot files on it, will it create a separate directory for the HamPi app? Want to make sure I don't wipe out the boot files off the card. Thanks!
