Makes me wonder, how Oxford Rail do what they do at a fraction of the price!
Do we really need all the extra parts, when most will go unfitted.
Bit of a high score in my book due to the price.
    Sorry for disagreeing.

I agree and Accurascale wagons are even cheaper and just as detailed as Bachmann and have sprung buffers!! Also look at the bag of bits that is not fitted, how much would these cost if they were? I am not sold on this is how much stuff costs and more a case of how much can we squeeze the customer.

Great review Jenny , you obviously know your subject and I’ve learned a lot about these wagons I never knew from your review . I’ve no doubt these wagons are stunning but I’m sorry I completely refuse to pay £35-£40 for a wagon so the price just rules it out . Not even under consideration . Others have pointed out that Accurascale and especially Oxford are capable of bringing wagons to the market at a fraction of the price, in Oxfords case less than 50% . What you have here is a Kader premium . It really should not be encouraged or before you know it all wagons will suddenly be £40 . Bachmann have definitely gone above and beyond on the price .Definitely not a 9 out of 10 for value .

I love your line that this should not be encouraged. I couldn't agree more and I must say I am disappointed that after a week Jenny has not replied to any comments on here.

@@maringarvanovic8011 That wont happen. Almost as if she's paid to give bachmann tat glowing reviews.😂 I take them with a large pinch of salt. Some folk on youtube will give a dog turd a glowing review it seems. If you want ballanced, give Sam's Trains a look, many take the rise out of him but he's straight down the line honest. He's a good guy, not afraid to tell it like it is.

To all those upsets by the pricing, you have to consider that everything has shot up in price recently across the board and with OO gauge detailed coaches in the 50-60 pound mark, and even N gauge coaches at up to 40 pounds, these are not really over the top. Accurascale products are fantastic (I have some) and they most likely work with much lower operating costs so can retail at a lower RRP. If you want to see something overpriced by a long chalk,, go and fill your tank with diesel!!! LOL

These are nice models. I have a number of their army vans in two designs. They are well made and look good. I recently watch an N gauge training of the grey and red railfreight wagons and it looked really good. Thx for posting.

I rember seeing these vans being used down here in Gosport. There were some small exchange sidings for the munitions base called Frater where you'd see the base shunter cross the main road and collect these vans and move them to the transfer munitions barges to meet the Royal Navy ships for loading.

    Hi Jen, Great review.
I have got a rake of of these including 1 with the red roof.
Once weathered up & combined with other Railfreight red & grey wagons on the market they will look quite a sight.

Hi, a nice review although not sure I agree with a 9.0 for "Value for Money", especially after seeing the number of seperate bits to fit yourself. Maybe with all those bits factory fitted they might be worth £30, similar to Rapido's Gunpowder Van, but not as they are. Just my opinion, thanks anyway, all the best Dave.

Instanter couplings would not be used on vacuum or air braked stock but screw link only, instanter couplings were used on unfitted vans & wagons a more updated coupling than the chain link

I bought some of these at the Alexandra Palace exhibition for an EM gauge club layout - I have yet to convert them!

The tare weight is 8.7 tonne with a gross weight of 12 tonne, so these vans could only carry 3.3 tonne or 3,300 kgs - just three 1 tonne pallets !! .... That has surprised me Jen ? ... The lamp irons were fitted to all wagons, not just air-braked stock. ... They needed to display a rear light if left on a siding at night. ... The silver fox on the Rfd model denotes Carlisle Currock depot, so not prototypical - as I'm sure other vans would display there own depot plaque ?

These are £39.99 from Bachmann and you gave a 9 out of 10 for value for money. I'm sorry to bang on about Accurascale again but when you order more than one pack you get 10% off. That makes each one of their wagons £22.50. Compare one of these to their PFAs or MGR. There is no reason what so ever for Bachmann to be charging £39.99 for a small wagon.

    • @formidable38
      @formidable38 2 роки тому +1

Ive also noticed this. I bought a 2 wagon set of Accurascale JSA's coil wagons, far bigger, more detail and works out at £27.50 per wagon. These are just insane!

They did not look to have metal wheels, if not, not worth it, only if Bachmann put them in to packs of four and provide a discount maybe retail for £100. That for four wagons is possible. We also might see a collectors club edition in the future that I hope like the one you reviewed might also be weathered.

I got 4 at the ally pally show in London 2 railway distribution wagons and 1 red and grey roof and a red with red roof that’ suits my modelling period they are top quality wagons price you have a choice you don’t have to pay for them

Yes they are lovely to look at but would not touch them with a barge pole. Just far too expensive and this price cannot be justified. I type this as I look at my just delivered Accurascale HYA hoppers that have cost me £33.75 each and are 3 times the size of these and have loads of detail on them.

Very nice, but still not worth £40 or ~£35 from the retailers in my opinion. Around the £25 mark and I might be tempted. Be interesting to see if some of these end up being offered with a 1/3 discount 6 months from now to hasten their departure from the shelves. My guess is they will.

Very nice up top but honestly dont see any value to all the detail underneath that isnt seen if the models used as intended.....its just added to the already high price.

They do look like nice, well observed, and well tooled wagons. I particularly like how Bachmann have successfully reproduced the differences in suspension this time. This is not something they always got right -- look at their TTA for example, where they tooled the as-built underframe, and ignored changes later in life, representing later liveries on incorrect early underframes. They also put that underframe under wagons that were built on old TTA underframes -- but which only ever appeared with the later suspension in real life.
But that price is the elephant in the room. That RRP for a short wheelbase van? It's a good deal for O gauge, but in OO gauge it's too far.
The comparison to Accurascale and Cavalex has to be made. Their wagons also feature sharp printing, lots of factory fitted detail, and tooling variations to reflect modifications over time. There's nothing here that sets these a step above what either of those two manufacturers are capable of. However, four of these (at Rails *discounted* price) would buy you six Accurascale HAAs from the manufacturer. They are more expensive discounted than Cavalex at full RRP.
We also have to bear in mind that while 2000 original vanwides were built, only 550 were ever converted to air braked examples (and there were only 50 that wore freight brown -- most were painted straight into red and grey after conversion), and they spent their productive life dedicated to MoD traffic.
By rights they should not sell at that price -- and we should see them stick around and become heavily discounted.
There's a problem though. VEA vans are a meme. Firstly, a lot of people will have had a Hornby VEA in their train set as a kid, and I suspect there'll be quite the "memberberries" effect. Also, this is THE wagon that everyone uses as the counterexample when someone says "Modern rolling stock is too long for a boxfile shunting puzzle layout". With these two effects combined, I suspect a lot more of these will sell than either the price or the in-service usage would suggest...

Worth mentioning at this stage, whilst Bachmann go from the sublime to the ridiculous,
Accurascale have just released pics of their forthcoming CDA .
    A pack of 3 for £74.95 / under £25 each.
That puts Bachmann's over priced tat , Zero out of 10 for VFM.
I dare say the suckers will still pay it though. 🤣

I agree. Also once you order that second pack they are £22.50 each.
