I'm curious your thoughts on the non-dominant hands role. Lately I've been using it to a greater extent by pushing the racquet at the beginning of the swing all the way till the hand reaches the hip to get racquet speed instead of letting it "drop". Do other players do this?
Given the way Wawrinka, Musetti and Thiem have used it throughout 2020 I am not sure if there is a 'best one-hander' anymore. I would say for analysis Gasquet, Thiem and Wawrinka are great to employ but also points can be taken from Dimitrov and Lajovic and of course Federer
For me overall Wawrinka is the goat and Federer in 2017 only with the most aggressive backhand of all times when he has totally exposed Nadal and had he played backhand like in 2017 he would not have lost a match to Rafa. Shame he decided not to play RG 17 as the only thing RF has missed in his career is defeating Rafa at RG.
Thank you, Coach Simon. Occasionally, I am so focused on creating topspin on the backhand, that even though it has high RPMs, my ball lands around the service line, too short. How could I correct this, to get more depth on my heavy topspin backhand? Also, when supinating my forearm, I shank many balls. Do I just need more repetitions to time it better? Thank you!
Hi Mark Focus more on lifting the ball. More height over the net will help you hit deeper shots when going for heavy topspin. The more topspin we apply, the quicker the ball dips down so to counter that, we need a higher trajectory. Also, focus on the supination after the contact zone, if you do it too early, you’ll likely shank it. All the best Simon

Do you think a club player can attempt to open up on their backhand like wawrinka? Or should they first get an amazing one like Federer that stays closed? I’m not really sure I’m thinking it’s probably better to develop one with staying closed first before opening up. What do you think? I definitely would want wawrinkas over federer
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thank you for this, perfect! I will work on this technique. And alright, cool, I live in Coventry and Manchester as a student.
I’ve always felt the one hander was weaker than the two hander (for me personally) and the return of serve gains I get with two hands outweigh the reach with one
Thanks for the answer! You guys are amazing, you’re able to answer all the comments, congrats! Me too I think that the two hander is more solid than one hander, but I feel the one hander more natural and I’m able to produce some serious winners! But it’s harder to hit the ball high and in extreme situations
That will allow you to produce more topspin but you may struggle to flatten out the ball or deal with low shots. So these options can help you produce topspin but use the optimal grip, the eastern 👍 All the best Simon
My followthrough isn't as high as I would like. I finish almost like a windshield wiper forehand, but then on the onehanded backhand. Everything else is in place for a good 1h (prep, racketdrop, supination, legdrive). What are your thoughts on such a follow through? Should I try to force a higher followthrough or is it a none essential?
I work on my left hand for two main reasons: 1. Balancing out the body 2. Switching on the artistic side of the brain. In this video I’m simply demonstrating both sides though
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I'll give it a try. I used to hit forehands with my non-dominant hand when I was trying to learn a two-hander. I've since embraced my single handed backhand, but will do some left handed work for the sake of balance! "Balance good? Karate good. Everything good. Balance bad? Pack up. Go home."
What about the stance which you eluded to? Most players take a big step to the left with the right foot which resulted in a complete closed stance. At the same time when they dropped the racket they dropped to the back fence instead of keep it on the left side
Good lesson, you only missed a few details. 1. Chin on shoulder as ball approaches, so you can pull on the handle. Bent elbow ok. 2. Pull on the handle, butt first, saving the outward snap as long as possible. 3. On the follow through, push through the shot with the tip of your thumb. Don't finish with the racket square to your wrist, or you'll have a rally backhand like Tsitsipas. Stan does the thumb point best. That's why he can mash cross court winners better than others.
All valid points that we’ve covered in our other lessons on this channel. This was focused on producing topspin, not the overall technical mechanics of the stroke
Simon how are you? Isn't it better to say punch the ball from low to high rather than brush because for most club players when you say brush they don't hit the ball the basically sweep the back of the ball and so they have no power
If a student is brushing the ball and getting no power, I’d simply tell them “The same motion but with more power” or “Great job but increase your racket head speed” Problem solved. If I told someone to punch the ball on any shot, it would be time to find a new career
I play everyday but Monday is holiday for me so when I get break from tennis and again play tennis next day(Tuesday) My game gets in horrible position. My groundstrokes power decreases, Speed decreases, Depth decreases and many frames so how can I Get help with this please help me.
Yes actually! So I’m a former D1 player and I just recently played my friend who is currently 800 in the world. I did not expect the rallies to be that fast. I could not keep up at all. I know I haven’t been playing competitively for a couple of years but I still hit every other day and I have never had troubles with young college players or other low ranking pros. So all in all how do get my timing right against fast pace heavy hitters? How do I prepare and move to the balls even though I believe I’m early I’m still late. Please help Simon thanks
You gave away the secrets but execution is the challenge. Always taking it to a new level while still able to slow play the ball. Tennis is a game of chess. The techniques are the fundamentals. Roger Federer had a great forehand but a weak serve and a good backhand. Federer knew the chess of tennis better than all of his opponents. I am not a Federer fan, but his style teaches more about the game than sampras, nadal, or novak. Novak and Nadal have emotional problems. Federer has acquired some emotional problems recently. The triumvirate is ending. Sampras used sheer power to overwhelm but very limited thoughtful play. I doubt that he could have beaten Federer when both were at their primes. Watch Federer attack the Nadal’s backhand at the Australian in 2017. By analyzing that match you learn more about tactics which I find is lacking in so many players who think tennis is serve and volley or baseline play. It is controlled positioning until the situation gives a real advantage then to make the play. Rocket serves unless they are aces are very easy to return aggressively so you better have great control if you want a flame thrower. Good tennis play reminds me of a cat on the hunt. Hope my words contributed something. Wish I had a good coach when I was young, but now with one eye I can still hit better than most players and that is challenging. No matter. Enjoy your time on the court. Tennis is the best sport!

Please, can you share some tips to perform a solid backhand in parallel?
Thank you, Coach Simon. Occasionally, I am so focused on creating topspin on the backhand, that even though it has high RPMs, my ball lands around the service line, too short. How could I correct this, to get more depth on my heavy topspin backhand? Also, when supinating my forearm, I shank many balls. Do I just need more repetitions to time it better? Thank you!
Hi Mark
Focus more on lifting the ball. More height over the net will help you hit deeper shots when going for heavy topspin.
The more topspin we apply, the quicker the ball dips down so to counter that, we need a higher trajectory.
Also, focus on the supination after the contact zone, if you do it too early, you’ll likely shank it.
All the best
Simon
Holy crap, you can hit a nice backhand on both wings! That's super impressive. Did you and Alex both play on the ATP tour?
Thank you for the support
Alex played on the ATP tour, I played the futures circuit when I could afford to do so.
Are there any lessons you would like to see in the near future?

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial how to lessen the disparity of game play vs practice in terms of being overly tight with your swing during match play.
I tried this today and it made my backhand More consistent. Thanks for that but i have one question: i am little too close to the Ball almost always when i hit my forehand so do you have any tips to fix this?
Focus on tracking the ball properly, and make sure you’re using the correct stances for each type of shot
My point of interest:
9:43 - Backhand topspin jump
I am thinking about purchasing a few courses on the website, should I become a VIP member first? Those courses don't require membership to purchase, but would it be cheaper if I were a member? What are the benefits of the monthly membership (29 per month)?
You just missed out on our Christmas sale. Are you an email subscriber?
The basic VIP membership gives you access to all our VIP lessons, the advanced VIP gives you the VIP content plus one course per month.
To get lifetime access to a course you need to join outright, most courses are between $197-497
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Indeed I just did! That's so bad, I was wavering between the membership and the direct purchase. Can I still get the sale price? (didn't expect it to end so soon :( ) I have my eyes on a few courses
I’ve taught middle aged men to open up on their one handers, I’m sure you’d be alright 👍
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 😂thanks
Brilliant. Thanks

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thank you for this, perfect! I will work on this technique. And alright, cool, I live in Coventry and Manchester as a student.
Lol wait what?? You’re ambidextrous?? Just casually hitting great one handers with both hands 😂 wowed 🤩
🤣
Wow Simon such a beautiful one handed backand (lefty also💪🏻), why don’t you use it in your matches?
I’ve always felt the one hander was weaker than the two hander (for me personally) and the return of serve gains I get with two hands outweigh the reach with one
Thanks for the answer! You guys are amazing, you’re able to answer all the comments, congrats!
Me too I think that the two hander is more solid than one hander, but I feel the one hander more natural and I’m able to produce some serious winners!
But it’s harder to hit the ball high and in extreme situations
what about semi-western backhand grip?
That will allow you to produce more topspin but you may struggle to flatten out the ball or deal with low shots. So these options can help you produce topspin but use the optimal grip, the eastern 👍

How can you do that. You can do both left and right one hand backhand.
Years of practice 👍
wow, did you ever play a match (just for fun) using just backhand as your groundstroke? that is what i would like to see.
Is there a training benefit to working the backhand with both wings, or are you just displaying thy fearful symmetry?
I work on my left hand for two main reasons:
1. Balancing out the body
Pack up. Go home."
awesome
Thank you for watching 👍
Maybe next video about one handed backhand grips?
I'll add that to the list
Was your phone going off while you were recording?? Scared the crap out of me i thought my phone was glitching out lol
Yes, sorry about that
Grete points was discussed. Back hand and four hands tips
Simon how are you? Isn't it better to say punch the ball from low to high rather than brush because for most club players when you say brush they don't hit the ball the basically sweep the back of the ball and so they have no power
If a student is brushing the ball and getting no power, I’d simply tell them “The same motion but with more power” or “Great job but increase your racket head speed”
Problem solved.
If I told someone to punch the ball on any shot, it would be time to find a new career
He is on the middle of a lesson recording, call later😂😂😂(Just joking) excellent ,thank you
🤣
I play everyday but Monday is holiday for me so when I get break from tennis and again play tennis next day(Tuesday) My game gets in horrible position.
My groundstrokes power decreases, Speed decreases, Depth decreases and many frames so how can I Get help with this please help me.

Bro how are you doing that both ways lol 😂 that’s insane I have never seen that
Thank you for watching 👍

Yes actually! So I’m a former D1 player and I just recently played my friend who is currently 800 in the world. I did not expect the rallies to be that fast. I could not keep up at all. I know I haven’t been playing competitively for a couple of years but I still hit every other day and I have never had troubles with young college players or other low ranking pros. So all in all how do get my timing right against fast pace heavy hitters? How do I prepare and move to the balls even though I believe I’m early I’m still late. Please help Simon thanks
You’ll have to shorten the swings and increase your intensity. If you train with that player a few times, the body will adapt 👍

Novak and
Nadal have emotional problems.
Thanks for the insights
