Vanilla is related to Orchids, part of the cost comes from the time involved in growing it. The vanilla plant flowers every 7 years, so crops have to be started every year to keep up.
Though I did not know that about vanilla (thank you for sharing that by the way) the cost has truly triple and quadrupled since I initially stocked up on the vanilla beans I have now. The same amount I once paid $25-$30 for is now $90-$115 and this is a result of the bee die off - at least what I have read from different sources
Almost ALL vanilla orchid plants are pollinated today by hand due to its highly inaccessible status. A typical honey bee cannot access vanilla pollen. The Melipona bee is the only one that figured out how to pollinate the plant & most likely the dying out of the amazing Melipona bees were due to the wide spread use of "Roundup" weed killer. Bad stuff. Has also killed off many of our honey bees as well. So hand pollination is required now and is a very exact process & must not contain too much pollen. That is great, I am pretty sure though back when I shot this video several years ago you could not get any at Costco at all, let alone for that price. Since shooting this video I know that the general cost of them has gone down
You know, this place would look pretty good with a vanilla vine. Flowers smell nice, I can stock the beans for baking... I could put in the background when I'm streaming, double-win.
So excited to see this! I will be making coffee extract soon. Any suggestions for butterscotch extract? I've been looking online for a recipe and can only find butterscotch sauce recipes. I'm not sure what to put in a jar to make buttersctoch extract.
I have been thinking of making different extracts too. I am so thankful for this video. You posted this at the perfect time. I had not thought about doing coffee extract but that is one I am definitley gonna try. By the way my vinegar turned out great.
This video was only to show a few ideas, there are many, many more for those who want to be creative. I have even made a pumpkin pie extract: ua-cam.com/video/JT7XZMjtyec/v-deo.html
Several reasons, some people want to use glycerin and water instead of alcohol because they are avoiding alcohol. Also, the glycerin adds a natural sweetness that does not raise one's glycemic levels and adds to the flavor. For me, it is about both the flavor and cutting back on the amount of alcohol used. It is also more frugal. Since this video, I have experimented further and found that an even more frugal and organic way that turns out great is to use homemade wine mixed with glycerin.
I think maybe those with recovering alcoholics in house would prefer non-alcoholic extracts. Saves on temptations for family members. U let my extracts sit 12+ months as I let mine get totally aromatic.
The coffee one really turned out amazing as did the raspberry and chocolate. The almond was good but did not taste like almond but I have since learned that various fruit pits are used in making an almond extract so I may try again. Apple seeds have an almond flavor to them.
Holy cow! I’m so glad I got my vanilla beans when I did. GEESH! I’ve made several extracts now since following ya along and I LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! Talk about a money saver! For pennies on the dollar you get four times and sometimes more the amount of the little bottles bought in the store! Annnnd you know exactly what’s in it! In fact, last night I experimented a little with my fever few/catnip extract...I added it, some ginger extract and a little turmeric extract to my cup of tea and AHHHHHHH sooooooo good!! It was so much easier to swallow that herbie tasting Fever Few with that little bit of sweetness from the sugar. Plus the ginger made it yummy and the turmeric actually tasted very mild too. Made me think of the song, “A spoon full of sugar...” Lol Well it works for adults just like kids! Hahahah TFS Love, hugs and blessings ~The Kid!
O wow, I have been thinking of doing something similar, at least making my next pain extract the way I did here with half alcohol and half glycerin. My newest one I made with a blend of marshmallow, catnip, feverfew, and echinacea so far as the best flavor but adding some sweetness and spices would really help too!
Rain Country now I’m even more excited to get my marshmallow!! Plus I already have some echinacea seed sooooo looks like I’m bout to blow my daughters yard up with herbs till I figure stuff out. ♥️♥️♥️
Since my videos are usually a week out before publishing, I check these the other day and the coffee one smells amazing! I can only imagine how wonderful these will be when they are done!
As you use your extract you can add more liquid to keep it going. I've been doing that for a little over a year, to prolong my vanilla, orange and lemon extracts. I think I'll try adding some glycerin. Thank you for sharing, can't wait to see the results on the chocolate. Been wanting an idea how to make my own.
@@RainCountryHomestead another question should you sprinkle the extract flavoring on the herbal loose leaf teas and let them air dry before packaging them in a tea bag?
I've got plenty of fresh spearmint right now and will try to make extract from it once I buy some rum and food grade glycerin. Thanks for another great video!
Just a note, this video is old and I have since used these extracts, they turned out amazing. I like them FAR better than extracts made with vodka only. I have even used my own homemade wine mixed with glycerin to make a peppermint extract and it too turned out wonderful and the thing I love about that is it was far cheaper and I know what went into making that wine :)
Rain Country : Glad you enjoy your homemade extracts. Just saying what the difference Grain etch makes when making extracts from citric fruits. Of course, it is often a fine line being ‘Extract’ or liquor. Thanks for sharing. God Bless!
Rain Country WOW! 7 months ago, well actually 9, adding what my comment said. I know I haven’t watched u as long as others, I wonder what my actual time is. Gee, time sure flies and u haven’t kicked me to the curb 👍🏼👏🏼 Thank u Heidi, I do appreciate u
Thank you so much! I use my own homemade soap and homemade skin cream. I actually sell both on my Etsy store but if you would rather make them yourself, I do have how to videos on these and you can search for them on my main page (just type it into the search bar)
good evening Heidi!! this video as we can see is six years old now. when it came out, i made a BUNCH of asst extracts...orange, raspberry, lemon, lime, and so on. also some almond....there might be some hazelnut in there too lol. fresh fruit and vodka. they have been in my fridge since. i never strained them. i am rather afraid to use them! can they spoil? they smell great still! i use extracts in my tea and coffee daily, but i have been buying it. what would you do?
The vodka alone would preserve them but considering they are in the fridge as well, I am sure they are fine. I suggest straining them and storing in your pantry
I am right there with you on the peppermint. I'm wondering, though, if the spiced rum would not be quite to my liking so I may just use some vodka...we'll see. I was thinking of doing one of the nut milks as a creamer (just use less water I imagine) and flavoring it up with some extract...I think peppermint would be lovely. Any suggestions on what nut milk might work best?
Cashew makes the creamiest but I do not care for the flavor as much. Pecan is my favorite but even a blend of pecan and cashew is quite good. You get the more creamy texture of the cashew milk along with the wonderful flavor of pecan (unless you are are like Mr. Rain and do not like Pecans). It has been years since I made Brazil nut milk so I cannot remember how much I liked that one or the texture. Almond is always a good one too.
Well, if I put some extract in do you think that would disguise any off flavors of the cashew? I know several people who do not like cashew milk even though they love the flavor of the nut itself, although I have never tried the milk before myself. While I have found a creamer that is not made with any weird stuff I still don't know where it comes from and it is expensive...and unfortunately I cannot get raw milk at this time. I am hoping I may have a source soon, at least with cow milk but you can't buy it here unless you do that shareholder thing (which is too far away to make it economical for me). Thoughts or experience from others here would be appreciated as well! I do love my one cup of coffee most days but MUST have creamer for it. :) Thanks so very much for your great feedback Heidi. I sure do appreciate it especially knowing how busy you are.
I just found you guys and am loving what I hear. We have been talking for a couple of years about homesteading and honestly just waiting for God to say "go". We are doing what we can with our little, less than 1/4 acre in town. I have a personal question, how old are you guys? We are both 51, are you ever to old to start living your dream?
I will be 52 in a month and Patrick is 53. Even though we are doing what we are doing on just a 1/3 acre, we are also currently waiting on the Lord to lead us to more land, if it is in His will. Until then, we just keep working on doing more right where we are at :D
I have been at our small place of not quite 2 acres, and I am soon to 61 next month. It makes all the difference in the world when you wait on The Lord. The outcome is amazing.
I am 62, my husband is 57. God blessed us by leading us to a foreclosed 5 wooded acre property 10 years ago and we have been rehabbing the house and working land over the entire time as time allowed. Doing the work ourselves over the years allowed us to scavenge so much used material over time. The work has been hard but so rewarding. We are so blessed to be where we are now in the project and are finally selling our home in town so we can retire to the homestead. We went for it, never questioned our decision and never looked back. If the thought of living this life is consistently tugging at your heartstrings, have faith in Him and go for it! God helped us along the entire journey. He has been so good to us.
hummm didn't think about coffee or chocolate flavoring!!! nor the almond, lol....that looks really yummy...I did do some anise, cinnamon, and lemon peel =)

@@tammyshirks6948 Even though there are herbs and supplements that can help, one cannot simply replace medicine with an herb or supplement. It is more about making several changes and we discussed what we did in this old video here: ua-cam.com/video/toj7Sh4vNGY/v-deo.html
Greetings Tutorial is on Point 🎯 Up in this Here Joint 🏡 Have you tried making extracts with essential oils? Add essential oils to your glycerin & rum. Since Vanilla beans are so expensive! Use vanilla essential oil! Or any essential oil like: orange, lemon, lime, pink Grapgrapefruit, cloves, cinnamon, peppermint, nutmeg, it's endless! I plan on buying those little amber McCormick looking extract bottles with a few drops of essential oils, glycerin & rum to make my extract! Love it!❤ Health 🥑 Wealth 💰 and Bliss ✨ #ladyduchess👑
I do use peppermint citrus oils from time to time (mostly when making my own homemade chocolates) but would not use vanilla as it is even more expensive than buying vanilla beans in bulk and making your own vanilla extract, especially when you make a perpetual vanilla extract that will get fare more out of the beans: ua-cam.com/video/IXWNHHnIzS8/v-deo.html
In making dandelion tincture...would you do it the same way? Like roast the root, chopped and then put in the same tincture? And would the fruit ones be the same as liquors?
You can do it that way but I now make all my medicinal extracts out of homemade wine. The difference between an extract and a tincture is that a tincture, while still an extract, is made with only 80 proof or above alcohol, extracts can be made with any solvent. I find the wine as a solvent still makes a powerful extract, I just take a bit more than I would if using vodka or other such alcohol to tincture it
I make my own coffee creamer and I use almond extract but I would like to know how to do that, I have the slivered almonds from Walmart and I have the bottle of fleischmann's vodka
Any ratio you want really. You do not even have to use glycerin, you can use raw honey or maple syrup instead. I suggest you check out this much newer video: ua-cam.com/video/c06SSMxSMMk/v-deo.html
Do you think it is feasible to use grain alcohol extract coffee flavor from spent coffee pods? I throw away pods every day. I have been extracting flavor from lemon peels by soaking them in vodka & it works quite well.
I would guess it would simply not have as much flavor as using fresh but you can always try with a small amount (maybe just a half cup or quart cup) and see. Yes, vodka is a common way to make flavored extracts and I have used it in the past. For most of my extracts though, I prefer the flavor and money savings of using my homemade wine mixed with raw honey. Vanilla is the one I use spiced rum and honey for the best flavor
Hello Need your advice some thing not related to this I am a soapmaker too. Trying to see the best way to extract essential oils in herbs and orange peel. is it by making hydrosols, making teas, making vinegar or by making infusions at home. Love to have your take on it. please help.
To get a pure essential oil from any material requires special equipment. As far as just getting the most from your herbs and such, it really depends on what you are using it for. Any method can be good but can also have different uses. Extracts can be pretty powerful especially if using a high proof alcohol and allowing it to extract for a couple of months but one can get plenty of good extraction by hot water infusion (tea)
Though this is not my first time using it as I have been using it with the vanilla and love it, I know there is some flavor difference but it seems to enhance the flavor of the vanilla. I am not sure what the final outcome with be on these particular extracts as it is my first time trying any of these flavors. I tend to experiment while making videos but I will do an update when these are ready so I can share my thoughts on them but I believe they will turn out great. :D
Hello Heidi, Can you do a how to make extract & Oil Fennel,Ginger & Star Anise Please, I love your videos they truly help me so much :), I never knew about the food glycerin, now I use it to help with the flavor of my extracts :)
Rain Country Have u considered it yet??? Or have u already done a video on it, if so, then I guess I haven’t seen it yet, cause I’ve never seen u put extract an oil together n a jar. Thank u
Awesome video, thanks! The coffe extract sounds great. I'm getting into Mead brewing and want to try and make my own extracts for flavoring instead of doing what most recipes call for, dumping the flavorings into the brew right after fermenting and letting it sit for a month. I'm assuming an extract would impart more flavor and require less ingredients because you're using a higher alcohol solution for the extract, where the mead is usually only 12-14% alcohol. I'm also thinking using an extract would create a clearer brew and would decrease the chances of contamination, as well as make it easier to tweak your flavoring. I'd like to try an extract of toasted white oak chips to create a smoke/oak flavoring like that of a bourbon, also ginger, peach, apple, and pecans. Need to find a way of making a caramel extract as well. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
I made fruit flavored meads for years simply by adding sliced or pureed fruits right at the beginning of the fermentation process and they turned out great. I could get a pretty clear mead if I wanted to by simply racking a few times. A few of the best ones I make were pomegranate, raspberry, and orange spice.
@@RainCountryHomestead Right on. I just finished fermenting a 5 gallon batch of straight honey and want to experiment with different flavorings in smaller 1 gallon carboys now.

Except for Mexican vanilla beans which are pollinated by the melipona bee

I have been thinking of making different extracts too. I am so thankful for this video. You posted this at the perfect time. I had not thought about doing coffee extract but that is one I am definitley gonna try. By the way my vinegar turned out great.
That is good to hear, which vinegar did you make, the raisin?
No I made the acv with the peelings and cores
You are saving me money.... Thank you, what a awesome idea I love it.
Don’t forget coconut extract!! Yum
This video was only to show a few ideas, there are many, many more for those who want to be creative. I have even made a pumpkin pie extract: ua-cam.com/video/JT7XZMjtyec/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing your talents. I always wonder though, why do people use glycerin in these?
Several reasons, some people want to use glycerin and water instead of alcohol because they are avoiding alcohol. Also, the glycerin adds a natural sweetness that does not raise one's glycemic levels and adds to the flavor. For me, it is about both the flavor and cutting back on the amount of alcohol used. It is also more frugal. Since this video, I have experimented further and found that an even more frugal and organic way that turns out great is to use homemade wine mixed with glycerin.
@@RainCountryHomestead , Thank you💕
I think maybe those with recovering alcoholics in house would prefer non-alcoholic extracts. Saves on temptations for family members. U let my extracts sit 12+ months as I let mine get totally aromatic.
The first three extracts I made at home were mint, lemon, and coffee. Coffee I'd argue, is better than vanilla in chocolate desserts.
The coffee one really turned out amazing as did the raspberry and chocolate. The almond was good but did not taste like almond but I have since learned that various fruit pits are used in making an almond extract so I may try again. Apple seeds have an almond flavor to them.
@@RainCountryHomestead Thanks for the tip! I'll remember that when I make extracts to give as Christmas presents
I was thinking the same thing, Also there is making in an instant pot. I am going to try making some of her extracts, but in an instant pot.
This is fantastic. Thanks for sharing this with us. I wish I could smell those :) Keep being awesome!
Since my videos are usually a week out before publishing, I check these the other day and the coffee one smells amazing! I can only imagine how wonderful these will be when they are done!
Amazing I love it
Can you use brandy in place of the rum?
Yes. Or even homemade wine like I do now. It is cheaper. I still used the spiced rum for vanilla though, just has the best flavor for that one
@@RainCountryHomestead Thanks for your quick response. Love your content.
I think you can use some extracts to mask some of the herbal meds that dint taste so good.
As you use your extract you can add more liquid to keep it going. I've been doing that for a little over a year, to prolong my vanilla, orange and lemon extracts. I think I'll try adding some glycerin. Thank you for sharing, can't wait to see the results on the chocolate. Been wanting an idea how to make my own.
wow, thats great about the glycerin being better for diabetics
Better to an extent but should not be used as a sugar replacement. However, in small amounts like in an extract, it is totally harmless/
Heidi, love this idea. I have made vanilla but never thought to make other flavors. I cannot wait to try this.
I love making my own extracts. So much better then store bought.

Can i add somein to my coconut oil?
@@dockiragazelle9657 I would imagine that you could, but I have not tryed it myself as of yet.

Hey...I love your videos ...I have a question. Can you use these flavoring for teas?. I hope so
Yep, you can use them for whatever you want
@@RainCountryHomestead another question should you sprinkle the extract flavoring on the herbal loose leaf teas and let them air dry before packaging them in a tea bag?
Also is it possible to buy an flavoring extract from you
I've got plenty of fresh spearmint right now and will try to make extract from it once I buy some rum and food grade glycerin. Thanks for another great video!
Remember spearmint grows wild I live in the capital district albany ny I found a bunch of wild spearmint basically a few stands of spearmint
Grain Etoh seems to yield better flavored of extracts from peels of citric fruits such as lemon, orange etc
God Bless!
Thank you for sharing this. It’s been after 2 months now, how did they turn out, least an best liked, especially your thought on the coffee one?
Here is the update video I did: ua-cam.com/video/5q74KN5Rnvg/v-deo.html

This is amazing! Have you ever made the kiwi extract? Do you have any idea how to cut the kiwi for the process?
For kiwis, I would slice them thin and dehydrate first. Then I would make the extract.
I make vanilla, but I will have to try the others.
What do you use for your skin ? It glows, no wrinkles, your skin is just beautiful !
How do you store your opened liquor ? What is the shelf life?
High proof alcohol has an indefinite shelf life, opened or not
Genius!
Do I need to strain them when they are ready? Thank you for the video.
You do not have to strain them but you may want to
Thank you.
Thank you for this Deborha!
I have been enjoying your videos I was wondering do you sale any of your products that you make if it be herbal medicine you make or your extracts..
I do not sell any medicinal extracts, herbs, or other such. I sell my skin cream and a few other hand made items though
@@RainCountryHomestead I hope you did if you had any thing for thyroid I was going to see if you did.. I would love to stop taking thyroid meds.. Thank you so much for this video, and Is there any way to do it without alchohol?😊
Yes, you can do three parts glycerin to one part water, this will decrease the shelf life though.
The alcohol burns away you don't taste it
I like that 😄

Have you tried making extracts with essential oils?
Add essential oils to your glycerin & rum. Since Vanilla beans are so expensive! Use vanilla essential oil!
Or any essential oil like: orange, lemon, lime, pink Grapgrapefruit, cloves, cinnamon, peppermint, nutmeg, it's endless!
I plan on buying those little amber McCormick looking extract bottles with a few drops of essential oils, glycerin & rum to make my extract! Love it!❤

#ladyduchess👑
I do use peppermint citrus oils from time to time (mostly when making my own homemade chocolates) but would not use vanilla as it is even more expensive than buying vanilla beans in bulk and making your own vanilla extract, especially when you make a perpetual vanilla extract that will get fare more out of the beans: ua-cam.com/video/IXWNHHnIzS8/v-deo.html
Heidi, do you know anything about masticating juicer machines?
Sorry, I do not. I had considered getting a juicer many years ago but then decided it was not worth the cost or the counter space.
I will try this. Great!! Waooo I'm glad to join
Where did d you get your bottles
I'm not a super big fan of pecans either (unless theyre in the pies lol) but i love walnuts and substitute them aaaalllllll the time
Mr, Rain does not like walnuts either, he is so silly! haha
I find the wine as a solvent still makes a powerful extract, I just take a bit more than I would if using vodka or other such alcohol to tincture it
Awesome info!!! TY
I make my own coffee creamer and I use almond extract but I would like to know how to do that, I have the slivered almonds from Walmart and I have the bottle of fleischmann's vodka
Heidi, if I use FG glycerin, What ratio do I need to use [glycerin to 100 proof spice rum] to make a pantry stable extract? Thank you!
Hello
Need your advice some thing not related to this
I am a soapmaker too.
@@RainCountryHomestead this for soaping
What do you use to clean your flip-top bottles?
A long bottle brush. I found mine in the brewing section of a hardware store but here is one similar: amzn.to/2D3bRYE
Do the captain Morgans spices have any outcome on overall flavor of extracts?
I will consider doing more extracts and oil blends :D Thanks for the suggestions and kind words!
Rain Country Hello Heidi! Do u make the orange spice??? It sounds yummy ! Thank u
