It is awesome but he needs to up his rates. That’s why love being a production company not a freelancer. I live close to DC but my rate is closer to $350-$400 per hour including one or two shooters and a PA. I make clean around $275-$300 depending on gig. The lowest I would go is $220 for one man band.
@@AcastroAX He mentioned a few times that these are below his normal rates. Rates are very market dependent as well. Being in DC is quite a different market than Dallas. Also as a freelancer, you are providing less than a production and that is reflected in price.

I think this was actually really awesome of you to be super transparent of this type of career. It really helps to keep other people from lowballing themselves too much and then in turn hurting the industry. Appreciate this! I've had many months this year of no income a month and have had to start branching out to other things pretty quickly. Professional video has dropped off massively in London for some reason this year. Always be prospecting! I let it drop a few times and it quickly led to months of nothing, throw Net30 into the mix and you got a dry year!
Right on man! People underestimate the power of maybe charging a bit less for a large client like a City, huge opportunity to be called back and turn a profit as the relationship grows.

thank you for this honestly, its very good for like minded ppl to see the money of any gigs that we all do as creatives. Speaking about money doesn't have to be a sensitive subject
Always great seeing this kind of transparency. Are these numbers before or after tax? I think its worth mentioning that you will loose ~1/3 of your profits to tax and thats important to factor in. If these numbers were pre tax it did hit your cost of living, but after tax your take home did mot cover cost. This is good to share with newer filmmakers who may not even think of that. Also would be interested to see cost of doing business factored. You did remove the cost of the people you hired, but what about all your business subscriptions, software, ect. That likely adds up to a few hundred a month. Thanks for a great video. Would love to see even deeper of a dive next time!
This is pre tax. I’m working with a CPA to get a proper fix on my finances. I’ve definitely been dumb for waiting this long to properly plan for taxes.
This is awesome, man! I love hearing from people in similar levels of their career vs hearing from those who have been at it for 20+ years. Where do you find that you get most of your work from?
You’re 100% right . Money is definitely a very taboo topic. I’m gonna actually take a page out of your book and do a video like this for my own subscribers
I would like to know if you are doing any on the post production on videos you shot for this month. Love the transparency. I hope this video gets tons of views. I know this would help a lot of people in our industry struggling with what they should be charging.
This is all just for production, most jobs don’t need me to do and pre-production or postproduction. I don’t take a lot of editing jobs either since they take so much time.
Love the transparency of this. Couple things that could help as well: do you edit this stuff? Or how does it get handled at the end and is that in the budget?
been following along for a while now and rarely comment tbh, but wanted to chime in and say you're doing it right m8 👏👏 while i totally love this level of info/content, wondering if you've seen any backlash from clients going public with what they've paid? I know some of the folks I shoot for could give a shit less, but also have a feeling I'd be getting some emails/scrutiny from others. now that you're going on week 5, has this been a concern of any type so far?
I'm still pretty early on in the process, so we'll see! Tbh. It’s not like they can stop me haha it’s not illegal to talk about finances and I have no problem telling them that 😅
Yes, we badly need more financial transparency in the industry. Not a bad month and agreed it should be more for a 7 day job with kit in the Gulf (though you explained the reasons for taking it well - no issue there, if you can translate it to more work, etc.). When I go there (I say it like it's every 2 months, but it is not, both sadly and luckily!) it's usually 1k usd per day with overtime, with per diems, and with travel days at half rate. They _can_ hire local crews at cheaper rates, but (drumroll, this is the important part) when there's a bunch of big events in Saudi and UAE around the same time, there's actually a shortage of competent hands ready to rock, so then _their choice_ is to risk having a possibly inconsistent result or paying you/us what we need to be paid. (And they absolutely can pay that. There are lots of problems in that neck of the woods, shortage of money is not one of them, is what I'm saying).
Good insight! For this, i was hired by a US company and sent out. Definitely still could charge more. My passion is filming esports so when these cool opportunities come up, i try and take it!
Lots of ways. The quickest way is through Bark and production hub. Varying levels of success but, it’s something that you can start using right now. Other than that, doing networking events and posting content is what i do as well.
this helps put into perspective what we should be charging as video pros...and you're just shooting and handing it off if I'm not mistaken...so the people out there doing videos from scratch to final edit have to stop charging $200 lol
Usually, no I am not. Every now and again I’ll do the edits but, I try to pass them off. Way too time consuming and I find it’s harder to get people to pay what an edit is worth.
@@lensofjaredhey Jared! I’m also an editor and I find it time consuming as well. Looking to start passing off my edits to someone else. How much did you pay the editor(s) for each shoot? Or if you didn’t pass off the editing, how much would you have paid for the editing?
Oh man, in my country, people pay 100$ for a all day job, and it’s a good price! They often offer to come and shoot for 15 dollars at the other end of the city, they also want the video to be of professional quality as a result
It is! I’m pretty adamant about purchasing my gear up front. Thankfully I’m at a point now that I have whatever I need for my scale of business. Anything from here would just be upgrades and additions!
Quick question or two: Are you happy with that amount of money? Does it allow you to live comfortably? …I know these are subjective questions but trying to place this number within a general continuum of satisfaction.
Yes! $7k a month is great as that fully covers all my bills for the month. Obviously more is better and right now we’re working on bring that cost of living down.
What do you do about taxes? I'm still a sole proprietor as I don't have the need to become an LLC. Do you save a percentage from each job for taxes? I tend to do 25% of each job which gets put into its own account. Thanks! Super informative video!
Honestly, you’re ahead of me. As of right now i just maintain a certain threshold in my bank account and expect around $8k of it to be for taxes. We are looking into a CPA right now to help. I do keep track of all my purchases.
@@lensofjared This is my first year as a full-time, freelance photographer and videographer. Haven't been good in the past with saving money so trying to make it a habit. I use QuickBooks for all my invoicing which helps keep everything in track. I also have a spreadsheet with the dates I was paid in the amount. I'm also looking to work with a CPA this year as I don't want to mess anything up and get audited haha.
Do you take into account income taxes when you accept these types of jobs? That's one of the hard things about being self-employed, as you're taxed at a higher rate than W-2 employees.
@@lensofjared Awesome. Just remember that Uncle Sam will take about 20-30% of that income come tax season. Next year, I plan to implement the Profit First system (it's a great book, Justin Porter does the same thing) to make sure we account for that phantom cost. I would also recommend talking to a financial planner about opening a retirement account if you haven't done it yet. The future is coming.
We do have a Roth IRA right now, but completely agree! We also keep a certain threshold in our account for taxes. Definitely looking to get ahead though and make it as cheap as we can.

Liking this transparency here 🙏🏼
All of this is before tax though(?) And do you not charge for your equipment?
This is my exact take home. I do think I’ve messed up with taxes which is why I’m looking into a cpa, if I’m being honest. My rates include my gear
Good stuff. I am curious, do your day rates include your gear (camera, lens, lights, etc) or do you charge an additional, separate gear fee? Thx
I have multiple price points that include various things
Oh man, in my country, people pay 100$ for a all day job, and it’s a good price! They often offer to come and shoot for 15 dollars at the other end of the city, they also want the video to be of professional quality as a result
Yeah that problem is everywhere it seems!
Don't forget to charge for editing!
I didn’t edit any of these projects.
Who is editing the videos you shot? The rates you mentioned are only for shooting but what about editing?
Most of the time I’m handing off the footage for editing. That’s usually decided by the people who hire me for these gigs.
Any platforms you feel have helped a ton like staff me up, or upwork? Or do you feel word of mouth has been the majority helper?
Also are you editing all of this?
Word of mouth will always be the best form! Bark and production hub are good as well for finding work
Do those filming rates include the editing?
They do not, all of these were based on shooting alone.
@@lensofjared makes sense, thanks. So most clients edit their own material?
You may have mentioned this in another video, but is all your gear paid off?
It is! I’m pretty adamant about purchasing my gear up front.
Thankfully I’m at a point now that I have whatever I need for my scale of business. Anything from here would just be upgrades and additions!
How do you bill/invoice your clients?
Usually I use square or zelle
Quick question or two: Are you happy with that amount of money? Does it allow you to live comfortably? …I know these are subjective questions but trying to place this number within a general continuum of satisfaction.
Yes! $7k a month is great as that fully covers all my bills for the month.
Obviously more is better and right now we’re working on bring that cost of living down.
@@lensofjared - Thank you for the response and insights 🙏🏻💪🏻
I was paid 50 for one wedding event as a freelance videographer
Gotta start somewhere!
Do you take into account income taxes when you accept these types of jobs? That's one of the hard things about being self-employed, as you're taxed at a higher rate than W-2 employees.
I don’t as of now but, I’m looking into a CPA to get all my ducks in a row
@@lensofjared Awesome. Just remember that Uncle Sam will take about 20-30% of that income come tax season. Next year, I plan to implement the Profit First system (it's a great book, Justin Porter does the same thing) to make sure we account for that phantom cost. I would also recommend talking to a financial planner about opening a retirement account if you haven't done it yet. The future is coming.
We do have a Roth IRA right now, but completely agree!
We also keep a certain threshold in our account for taxes. Definitely looking to get ahead though and make it as cheap as we can.
What would consider a bad month 0$?
If I can make around $5k I’m happy, anything over my cost of living is what I’m aiming for.
@@lensofjared thats great
Loving these. Would love to chop it up about freelance at some point!
