That "happy birthday" command is the best. Imagine a birthday kid closed his eyes, then suddenly hears Prime's voice doing the voice command. It would truly be the best birthday in the Galaxy
A robot with that articulation and technology, under $1000 (which is the maximum I would ever spend on a hobby toy) was so unexpected it honestly gave me future shock. I still think it looks like CGI sometimes.
I guess it may look like CGI because of its slightly unnatural moves. Our big monke brains think that if something looks vaguely like a human, but moves differently, then it's not real and shouldn't be there. Because this robot is, well, a robot with programmable actions, no wonder it moves differently from humans and tech in it is VERY cool tho. A sub $1000 price point is fairly low considering that it's basically can be considered not a toy, but a machine.
I thought this thing would be just an expensive "plays by itself" sort of thing, but the fact you can add your own preset movements AND it has a fun way to teach you? Jesus, I'd call this thing pretty well worth it (at its original price).
I predict that 10-20 years from now, these will be almost affordable and commonplace. It’s like watching a small part of history unfold (or transform) right in front of your eyes.

The sound design on this thing is unbelievably good. The way they used fake mechanical noises to mask the real mechanical noises made every movement and every sound feel intentional, whereas every other motorized toy in the world sounds like you're just supposed to ignore the loud buzzing it creates.

There's an automatic transforming robot before, but the upper half just folds itself upward from a car to become the "Body" of the robot, and the rest, waist down is literally STILL A CAR, still pretty cool though. Battery powered toy and all
I have a one-step changer of Starscream from ROTF and it's kinda awful and super-deformed but I had fun with it as a kid and I guess that's all that really matters 😅

I don't have a disposable income for this kind of thing, but it's not often I see a Transformer with a massive pricetag that's actually worth the price on the tag.
Right? It feels weird to say in a world of $300+ masterpieces, but.. 780 bucks is actually reasonable for something like this. This many motors and complex programming, it's absolutely fair. What's more, they leaned into their limitations and made it exactly the compromise it should be in terms of joint clearances and such, and it even makes its own mecha noises as it moves to cover over how loud and fake sounding the movements of robot toys like this tend to be. like all those robot pets.
Damn. Really wish Hasbro had showcased the app a lot more up front. The custom animations and sounds would have totally sold me on that giant price tag. Great review, Jobby! Very thorough, informative, and as always very entertaining.
I got this for my son as his Xmas gift. As a transformers fan since the 80s, this is definitely the greatest toy I've ever seen! I was reluctant to spend this much on a toy but it's totally worth it.

Did robotics in high-school, and bloody hell was it expensive to do all that. Those were just modular parts, not purpose built and printed parts. Theres a resaon why almost all robotics teams need sponsorship
I heard recently that Hasbro and Takara are steering out of the way of the word "Transform" to avoid it becoming too generic and associated with any transforming figure. This is why they started using the word "Convert" and Optimus says "Autobots: Roll out!"
They shouldn't as their called Transformers for a reason and that's what they do, transform. As for toys that aren't transformers that transform, they should use convert for them.

The automatic transformation was cool enough on its own. The absolute ocean of options and customisation on top of that is just…holy shit this is the best thing ever.
I think if you smoothened it out, the materials for the thing won't be for that kind of movement (maybe scratches or something could occur), besides Optimus is a robot so the awkward movements arent that big of a deal

To me, he seems more inspired my MP-01 with his blockier proportions due to and simpler transformation, especially with his larger size. However, I do see the similarities to MP-10 as well.
When the video first started I was thinking it was just gonna be a dainty robotic toy. But man this is the coolest robotic toy I have ever seen. Very impressive too, everytime he'd go into car/truck mode, I said out loud "ok that's pretty cool" with a smile on my face. I would have absolutely loved this as a kid, I'd love it now.. if I could afford it...
This reminds me of that R2D2 toy that came out a long time ago. It had voice commands too and could react to certain things you said, and it could move around and even dance.
I don't play with Transformer anymore and I usually watch your videos, because of your input / comedy. But this thing looks actually amazing and actually made me consider getting into it again.
Now imagine if they made several more autobot figures who could do similar stuff to Optimus but could also interact with each other. Like for instance if Optimus were to say auto bots engage and you had like 5 other figures they would all hold up there rifles and just start firing away, would be so cool however you wouldn't have a lower half if you wanted to afford them all.

There's something really funny about Optimus saying his own name every time he moves
To me, he seems more inspired my MP-01 with his blockier proportions due to and simpler transformation, especially with his larger size. However, I do see the similarities to MP-10 as well.
This was quite the surprise, what a great way to close out Christmas!

When the video first started I was thinking it was just gonna be a dainty robotic toy. But man this is the coolest robotic toy I have ever seen. Very impressive too, everytime he'd go into car/truck mode, I said out loud "ok that's pretty cool" with a smile on my face. I would have absolutely loved this as a kid, I'd love it now.. if I could afford it...
This reminds me of that R2D2 toy that came out a long time ago. It had voice commands too and could react to certain things you said, and it could move around and even dance.

Now imagine if they made several more autobot figures who could do similar stuff to Optimus but could also interact with each other. Like for instance if Optimus were to say auto bots engage and you had like 5 other figures they would all hold up there rifles and just start firing away, would be so cool however you wouldn't have a lower half if you wanted to afford them all.
