  • How to scrimshaw a whale's tooth, the next level: scrimshawing a puffin! This is a slightly advanced level of scrimshaw, so much so that we had to split the tutorial into two parts. First, Brian carved the whale's tooth into the form of a puffin in part 1: • How to Scrimshaw a Puf... .

    Of course, not everyone has a whale tooth hanging around for scrimshawing, and anyway there are laws governing ivory, particularly elephant ivory, that you can research on your own. You can sometimes find existing ivory in antique stores: elephant, walrus, warthog, hippopotamus and even mammoth tusks; and whale and elk teeth. "Existing" being the key word.
    You do not need ivory to scrimshaw, though. You can scrimshaw on antler (moose, deer) and bones. Turkey bones are a great material to practice scrimshaw on. You can even use cow bones sold cheaply as dog chews. And then there's commodite, AKA Johnstone. You can figure out what that one is yourself. (Hint: It's porcelain.)

      We just ordered a basic scrimshaw kit from Amazon, it’s a pocket knife. We’re
      Going to do a review and scrimshaw something cool. Maybe raffle it off to a subscriber. If it arrives in time hopefully that video will come out next weekend.

    Brian, thanks for all the info on your scrimshaw tools and techniques. I make and scrimshaw a few powder horns each year, and watching a master at work is very helpful, indeed.

    Absolutely beautiful work. Thank you for sharing your talent. I did a tiny bit of scrimshaw back in the last century. I sailed across the Atlantic and when we stopped in Madeira, there was still an active whaling station there. I want to try again on a piece of G10 on the scales of a rigging knife. Thanks for the motivation, though I know my work will never come close to the wonderful pieces you do.

    Very cool David! I'm betting you make your own tools, as do I. For a while now my favorite small tool material has been furniture and box spring coils. One old couch and you have materials forever LoL. I'm a big believer in the old way. Recycle, reuse until it's used up. It's a beautiful piece, very nice work!

      Hey Nick, I’m with you “ reuse until all used up”. And yes, those chair springs that look like a continuous S get used a lot in my shop, along with files, truck springs, and anything I can get my hands on. Keep in touch, Brian

      Hey Dave, how are you? Whale’s teeth are not common but here in New England you still come across them in antique shops Occasionally

    Awesome work Brian I love it. I am very impressed with your skills. Now how much do you charge for something like that? How do you do your pricing for your work?

    • @StockmanOriginal
      @StockmanOriginal  Рік тому

      Hi Ken, thank you so much! That piece is 750. Pricing is always the hardest part of the operation but what I try to do is keep track of my time plus the cost of materials. I don’t put things in galleries because of the incredible mark up involved. Max started a Facebook group called Stockman Original’s lost arts and forgotten crafts where l post items pretty much as l finish them, plus so many other people show their work as well.
