Don't let his abstractions or harmonics fool you. Monk fully understands time and space in relation to his compositions. If this were mathematics then you would have an "x," "y," a curve as well as angles. If this were a painting then it might be anything from cubism to abstract expressionism. The music is many things and that's what makes it art as opposed to meaningless musical fluff.
The back cycle from F# first starts around 6:12 (Monk's 2nd chorus), and yes, the bass follows. It was a thing Monk always did (every version I've heard). Gotta say, Malik is killing it on this track.
play it clean and correctly SLOWLY. A LOT. FOR A LONG TiME: EVERY DAY: FOR A LONG TIME: SLOWLY: the speed will come. I didn't believe it , always practiced fast, played sloppy. Now i practice.slooooooooooww. And it showwwwws. try it.
Alan Gonzalez Martinez no. You are the one who is full of it because clearly you’ve never listened to Johnny Griffin or even bebop in general before in your life. He isn’t called the “fastest tenor in the west” for nothing. It’s uptempo yes but he has been known to play MUCH faster, along with other guys as well. Listen to “Mildew” or “Cherokee” or “The Way you Look Tonight.” This is fast for sure but it’s not uncommon to play at 300+ bpm. Listen to Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Sonny Stitt, any of those guys.
@@christopherfischer6998 Hahahaha I've transcribe Stitt's solo on Eternal Triangle and Clifford brown solo on Cherokee but sure man, whatever... this is a ballad for you... this is nothing.
Johnny Griffin (tenor sax) is an unstoppable force of nature. Wow!
my left ear really enjoyed the sax solo 👍
If you listen to Joel Frahm’s solo over his burning solo on “rhythm changes at 360 bpm” you can tell he got a lot of it from here!
he actually talked about how he transcribed this solo once in a master class.
DestinMillerMusic yes I saw that masterclass. He also commented on that same video of how he got it from here
When Giants Walked The Earth. DAMN!
A little giant
Great Jazz!!!! Thelonious Lives!!!!
Johnny Griffin's solo on this though. It's taking me ages to transcribe this but it's so rewarding
Alan Gonzalez Martinez please post the transcription and a video if you finish!
God Bless You!!
@@contactkeithstack Hey man! I have 3 choruses so far but gonna pick it up where I left. Let me know if you still want it. Sorry for the late reply
A great version - I love it's speed!
I believe it is Roy Haynes on drums.
Masterpiece.
That Reminds Me Of Blue's Clues! 😀😄😎😍
wow

JG little Giant
Great version!! However, It is stated above that this is Live in Milan, whereas, the album itself says recording at The Five Spot Cafe, NYC.

Johnny is great here, but Rouse OWNed this one.

around 6:40 when he starts doing the circle of fifths does the bass follow him?
I think so but it's hard to tell because the Piano's lower register notes are so high in the mix they are blowing the bass player away.

How do they do this at these tempos?! Ridiculous.

By practicing slow. By the way, this isn’t very fast at all. This is nothing.
@@christopherfischer6998 "This is nothing" you are so full of it. Its 260pbm or so but it is uptempo

the way these drums are mixed gives me anxiety
What don't you like about it? Too far back?, very left channel. I think it works in the context of the swing.
Is this with Roy Haynes on the kit?
yes! and Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass
Aloha I’m feel it’s art blakey 🌝
Nils Andersson art blakey played with monk later on black lion records in a trio setting.
Nils Andersson check out the album Something In Blue. 1971. that’s got blakey on it.
@@nilsandersson5069 this doesnt sound like art blakey
