    ERRATA: It looks like the voice control requires HDMI-CEC but the remote will support TV IR for manual button pushes as some commenters are pointing out below.

    Nice review - you helped me decide to purchase this remote. One thing to note, however: private listening via the Roku Android App is not a viable solution for those who own older Roku models because the feature is not enabled. I own two Roku 3s (2014), a Roku 2 (2015), and a newer Roku Express (2019). Only the Roku Express can achieve private listening via the Roku phone app. I don't know why, but this limitation has always existed for these older models ever since the phone app began supporting private listening. However, private listening does work on all my Roku models using the original gaming remote that came with the Roku 3s and now with this new Roku Voice Remote Pro.
    This is a great upgrade to the old remotes and I'm very impressed with it so far. I like the built-in rechargeable battery, but wish it used a USB C connection instead of the micro USB. The battery drains at a much greater rate when using private listening, but it will last several days even when binge watching. I am pleased to report that the the Roku Voice Remote Pro can be plugged in to charge while being used for private listening - I charged from 22% to 100% before finishing a 40 minute show. One should always unplug the headphones when not actively watching/private listening. Roku remotes have always constantly drained batteries, even when not in use, if headphones are plugged in.

    @Lon.tv - I'm a long time RokuTV user and the number 1 reason why I bought this remote was because of the private listening. The phone app does NOT work nearly as well as the Remote Pro in terms of audio/video synchronization. There was about a half second delay with the phone app and I am so glad they have this remote now.
    1. Doesn't need to use wifi (phone app can be inconsistent to connect to the TV)
    2. Do not need invasive app on your phone (tracking, tracking, tracking)
    3. Perfect audio/video sync (no annoying delays)
    4. Standard 3.5mm headphone jack (used my old apple earbuds that I can lay on my side and not bother my ears)
    5. Better quality feel than standard RokuTV remotes. Some standard RokuTV remotes can feel very cheap.
    The one downside of this remove, does not have a backlit keypad. Upon motion, have it glow for like 3 seconds. Unfortunately, not available.
    Overall, 9/10 remote and worth every penny.

    For $30 I would rather not be stuck with worthless buttons like Sling. I really prefer AA batteries. Those internal batteries lose their charge and it can be a pain to find a replacement that isn't garbage from China. My remote for my original Shield TV is pretty much a paperweight now. Battery won't charge.

      Or even worse mine with garbage out of the box. Brand new it indicated it was fully charged but the about information said 50%. I didn't consider this too big of a deal because I figured the first full recharge would top it off at 100% again. Only thing was a month and a half later when it needed charged it would not charge at all. Couldn't even get a full first charge out of it. It's completely dead, worse past the 30 day return window from Amazon so now I'm desperately seeking a way to get a replacement from Roku support but their support is not good.
      Basically it feels like $30 wasted. I'm fine with the buttons though. I have netflix, hulu, and Disney plus. I was hoping it had an apple plus button because I also have that but mine had sling instead of Apple. Worst case scenario, maybe later if it actually has the Apple button I might try it again open the batteries later are not part of the bad batch that originally went out it seems.
      Very disappointing also because the battery won't take a charge even though it's brand new. Not even a single first charge. I really got used to those programmable buttons in the first month and a half also. And then set up for UA-cam and plex. Extremely handy. Too bad the batteries dead and there's no way to charge it now.

    I just bought a voice remote for the TV control. Mine is not the same remote in the video mine doesn’t have the options on the left side of the remote or the 1 & 2 buttons. Voice search seems to work pretty well.

    Is there a way to have sound coming out of your tv speaker while using the private listening at the same time? My parents are older, my dad cannot hear well, but my mom can. I would like to be able to use the private listening for my dad so it will be louder and still have my mom listen to the tv at a normal volume.

    How long should you charge it when you open the box before you connect it or is it already charged brand new?

    I'm a little late to this one, but is there any audio lag when using the headphone jack? I'm getting a TCL Roku TV and I was wondering if this was a good alternative to having to buy a BT transmitter and an expensive ATPX LL set of headphones. I want to use it for video games (just listening) and movies.

    • @roberth1723
      @roberth1723 3 роки тому

      No audio lag when using a headphone jack for private listening. Roku does a very good job of synching sound to the picture (for every Roku Channel I've used). I imagine your TCL Roku TV will include a remote with private listening built in (depending on the model). I'm somewhat jealous - I've been eyeing those TCL Roku TVs for some time! I would give the native Roku private listening a try before perusing any more expensive/difficult solutions. I've used private listening for years with good results on my Roku streamers. However, I don't know how it works on a Roku TV, i.e., if it works for gaming or anything other than streaming content.

    Excellent review. You would think it would be easy enough to make a review of a product like this but that is not the case. Lon here covers all of the bases. For example, right off he makes sure you are aware that to use the find feature you have to have the voice side activation button on. He also says that use of the side activation button will drain the battery faster. The most important reasons I would buy this remote is to find the *** remote and to avoid battery replacements. The two big downfalls of ROKU and their remote. He also goes beyond the remote and discusses other alternatives. I'll be back for other reviews. Maybe other reviewers ought to review this reviewer.

    There are a few things I haven't seen talked about in any reviews I've watched for this remote.
    1) When you take this remote out of the box is it fully charged, partially charged or mostly dead?
    2) How long does it take to fully charge from nearly dead?
    3) Can you charge it while using the remote with private listening? If so how long vs. charging it without private listening headphones connected?
    4) How quickly does the battery drain with the 'always on' mic turned on vs. turned off.
    5) How fast does the battery drain using headphones plugged in for private listening vs. not.
    6) If you are using the remote while it is charging does it pop a message onto the screen saying it's 100% once the charge is complete?

    Anyone else have the voice remote pro not recharge? I've had mine for just under 2 months and the first time it needed recharged the battery will not charge. Completely defective battery. Only lasted a single use, less than 2 months. Brand new it indicated it was fully charged upon receiving it but the about information said it only had 50% charge. Recently I tried to charge it and hours later it's still at 0%. Started at 2%, tried it, no charge, kept trying different ports and outlets, no charge whatsoever.
    Worst part is it's very difficult to find how to return it for a replacement. Their support is not good, anyone else have a defective non-rechargeable battery in this rechargeable remote?

    I was certain you are wrong about needing HDMI CEC, but now you've said it twice now, so maybe it's different now with the fancy remote? Maybe do a whole video covering device control features of Roku and Fire Stick

    • @LonSeidman
      @LonSeidman  3 роки тому

      This one definitely requires HDMI CEC for TV control per the documenation.

    • @aantony
      @aantony 3 роки тому

      @@LonSeidman OK. It might be worth investigating. Previous documentation said that it can try to detect the TV model from HDMI, but can fall back to brand/code selection. It was certainly using infrared for power and volume controls. This was using the streaming stick. Since the streaming stick uses and RF remote then why else would it have an infrared blaster on the remote.

      @@aantony It has been investigated see here: support.roku.com/article/115013019828

    • @reticularimus
      @reticularimus 3 роки тому

      @@LonSeidman I think he meant an empirical investigation through real world actual use, not a web search of documentation. I have the new pro remote. I have a atyme 39" (entirely non-smart tv w/o any CEC ports) that I got from fry's years ago. It is obvious that this remote operates the atyme's power and volume controls via infrared only. I did set it up through the roku menu though. Several other commenters have also pointed out that there is no mandatory CEC requirement for the express 4K+ either. But I guess you're determined to leave both of the recent roku reviews as they are.

    • @roberth1723
      @roberth1723 3 роки тому

      @@aantony, you are correct. I don't have HDMI CEC, but upon initial setup my Roku Voice Remote Pro cycled through common brand codes in an attempt to find a setting that would control the TV. Unfortunately for me, I have a cheap RCA TV that had no working codes. Regardless, it does try to detect the TV model via IR.

    I have this now for my TCL R635. It’s great but the strangest thing happened on day one. If you said channel 7 it would take you to the tuner channel 7. Now all the sudden I have to specify channel 7.1 or it will take me to search channel 7 as a movie or show in the roku search. It shows the external control they have and how they are always adjusting.

    It's a privacy nightmare.
    I've replaced my new Rokus remotes with older ones because:
    - the voice-enabled remotes eat batteries like candy
    - probably because they are constantly listening and possibly reporting back to base
    Sure, most of us have 'nothing to hide'. Oh... really? Nothing?
