- I got alerted to a rare Datsun that had found its way from New Zealand to Kumamoto, which is kinda near where I live. Just 800 of these SSS versions of the Datsun 1200 sedan were built and featured a highly tuned engine; cam, twin Delloro carbs (plus airbox), extractors, plus some styling tweaks; bonnet blackouts, SSS emblems inside and out, plus 5-slot jellybean wheels, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, 8,000 rpm VDO tacho... All very cool stuff.
Big thank you to:

I recognise that NZ safety standard logo on the windscreen
Haven't seem one patrolling the streets of NZ for a while. Turns out some classics are making their way back to Japan these days.
A friend of mine back in high school, his dad had a white Datsun 1200 two door. Always loved those little cars.
Oh, there were in the US? Nice. The pickups, too? I shall do some googling.
Bro i never get tired of your vids. Even the ones ive seen already i keep repeating them
That steering wheel is a great NZ touch, deep dish Wildcat steering wheels are one of the coolest looking aftermarket steering wheels ever made i reckon, i have a couple of them myself
Oooo New Zealand assembled car awesome to see in Japan. Watching all the time from NZ!
Awsome. Thanks, Kenny :)
She's a sweetheart. Cool to find friends and fans out there. And yes, it pays to be nice...
Hahaha, yes! I shall be on my best behaviour going forward :)
Watching from Oamaru New Zealand just 1 hour south of Timaru.
Funny thing is that in 1996 I lived in Timaru and owed a 160J SSS 4dr in yellow and black.
Yeah? Nice. 160J Violets are damn rare here too by the way
That interior looks pretty solid Dan, and 12 inch wheels!!
NISSAN DATSUN DELUX 1200🥰 This model sedan never arrived for Puerto Rico but the coupe did, and Puerto Rico has the fastest in 🚖☄️ the world and with different engines since, due to how 🚓-💨 rigid and light this body is, they are the favorites in Drag Racing of the island.🏝️🇵🇷
Steering wheel is a Wildcat, they were common dealership addons for various brands in NZ
Thanks for the info :)
That Datsun 1200 four door is unique,👍👍👍👍👍👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Awesome little car, love the bonnet blackouts, as always dan have a great weekend and thanks for the vid, cheers
Thanks, Hugo! Legend. Thanks for watching :)
that datsun definitely tickles my boxes!
Hahaha! ;-)
Great car, i have one. It was my first rally car.
Wow, so clean!! And oh man, it's so cool when the owner knows you and it's a fan of the channel. Have a great week Daniel :)
Thanks, Walter. (Sorry I didn't get to your comment on the last video yet...) Hope you're well :)
Thanks you... "T" :)
A very special car, indeed. Straight out of the dreams that car is 🚗
NZ, Japan, and Germany are my driver bucket list
I hope you drop into Australia on your way to/from NZ
Very beautiful video bro
Nice work Dan, the 1200 definately tickles the boxes with those twin carbs, hello Ladies....😆
Haha, thx Tim :)
Nice one Dan, ticked all my boxes, and tickled them too!
Good stuff
I just love that 1200!!!
Cool. Hope you enjoyed the car and the vid :)
That Datsun logo on wheel center is neat and cute.
Yes :)
Very nice car! Greetings from Poland!
Sweet little 1200. Would love to see more of the skyline looking ute?
Ah, the Suzuki Mighty Boy. Not sure if you use Insta or Facebook, but I just posted a bunch of pics to both places. I hope you can check it out.
Such a cute little car!
I wonder if it could do a 168ft burnout ;-)
That is a really great Garage. I would probably hang out there all the time if it was near where I live
True lurker.
An awesome find. An awesome car. An awesome UA-camr. An awesome bloke! AWESOME!
Aww, you're just saying that because you have a clear and accurate understanding of things that are awesome. ;-)
That Datsun sure tickles my box!
Hahaha! Thanks, mate :)
Why has it takin me this long to find you, how has youtube's recommendations be so wrong!
Hey, Stefan. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you see many more vids you like :)
And bonus Celicas! You know I love those. (I won't ask just how they managed to fill such huge fender flares, though. :) )
I would drive days to see that car !
I learn something new in every video you post. Amongst other things, what I learned most, is that I don't know what that weird white mini-ute looking thing was next to the triple S, and that I want to know more! I also learned that yes, you can have too much fender flare, but if you REALLY own it, it can work. Its like pulling you pants up to your chest and the guy next to you, zips up over his nose. Touche. Those guys did it right.
Hahaha! Hey, I just tagged you on Insta on a post with more of those Suzuki Mighty Boys :)
Yeah has definitely been restored on the inside, interesting that the speedo is in MPH
Yeah, signs of resto on the outside, too. I'm not sure if NZ was using MPH back then. Were they?
NZ roads switched to metric speed limits in 1974, two years after the Datsun 1200 SSS came out. Edit: some sources say the speeds signs changed in 1975, but in either case it was after the 1200 SSS came out.
Looks like a wild track steering wheel that you could buy back in the day. The kit came with different center button's. You needed this and a large sticker over the top of your windscreen to be legit lol
Might it have been a Wild Cat? I'm clueless, but several others suggested it was that.
Well done Daniel, always look forward to your vids mate.
I've got to add my two cents regarding the sss, awesome wee cars. Many years ago my friend had a road version and a full on rally car. Both genuine sss. Just to point out a few things I noticed, they usually had a clock in the dash and the bottom sills were painted black. A boot spoiler was an option. Still this Datsun could be the real deal!
Awesome. Thanks Matt. I appreciate the info
Sweet Nissans as usual ; great video 👍
Thank you, Shammah. Sorry for the lack of Laurels though :/
@@wasabicars you cover a lot of japanese gems I love man no worries, thanks for all the times you show C33s although they aren't your cup of tea 🙏🙌✌️
We got those in GX form here in South Africa. Was a fast little thing back in the day. With some Weber sidedraughts and a hot cam they could rev like the clappers. 👍
Nice!
Your efforts are greatly appreciated mate. If only I was aware of these sorts of options for my first car (in the early eighties) rather than just looking at old Falcons (not that there is anything wrong with an old XL Falcon.)
I hear you. With everything I now know... things would indeed be different.
That was great such a nice little Nissan
At least the guy was nice about it 😍😍👍👍
Definitely. It makes my "job" much easier. :)
These cars were a homologation special created in New Zealand in 1972, for races such as the Benson and Hedges 500 mile race, where the cars were meant to be standard production cars from the local assembly lines. So no Mini Cooper S or Ford Escort BDA allowed in the small capacity saloon car classes in these long distance races. The car in original spec should have air cleaners on those twin dellortos 40 DHLA sidedraught carburettors.
Would like this one!!!
Thanks, Joseph
Sweet little sleeper.
Yes, Quite a jump in power output
Increasing from 60 to 90 HP is a big difference on such car although is not Looking so👍. But I imagine that the noise what the carburetors produce is just heaven ❤️. This guy's are great and just calling a friend so that he rock's by with another cool looking car😅.
Yes, big jump in power! Perhaps it could challenge your Merc campervan ;-)
@@wasabicars No, I would loose because the Mercedes has only 86 HP😅. But I am in process of weight reduction 🤣👍.
Excellent !.
Thanks, Paul
@@wasabicars Love what you do; and the EFFORT clearly that you go to; to achieve this content.
cool :). what i also find interesting is that white mightyboy next to it with its hakosuka style grille on it. thats like third mightyboy with this grille i see, i thought its a custom thing, but now that i see it on like third car im wondering if someone produced it as an aftermarket kit, haha
I have no idea who produced it, but I've it on a few cars. I'll post some pics to Insta later
Those came to Trinidad as Datsun 1200 and 1600 later on.
Thanks, Clifford :)
Awesome video and a good looking Sunny with an amazing story Daniel! 👍
I know the feeling: I've also been at a car meet a little over a year ago and someone was starting at me. I didn't make the weird face, but it turned out he thought he recognized me. apparently some people actually know who I am... 😅 It's good you made an apology😆
Thanks, Art. I'll have to be more careful. My memory is only going to get worse ;-) Thanks for watching. I hope you and your family are well.
@@wasabicars I don't think it's your memory. Your just meet too many people with great cars to remember them all! 🤣
Cool little Mighty Boy too
Yeah, that caught the eye of many people. So much so that I just posted half a dozen pics to socials to make everyone happy ;-)
@@wasabicars perhaps if someone made a 1200 SSS Mighty boy, they may have been more attentive lol
The last time I saw more flared things was in the mid-90's on jeans.
Btw 90hp in that ''palm-car'' would be source of some innocent fun.
Haha! Big flares. Sorry, what's "palm car"?
@@wasabicars :) as in fits in ones palm, you know small thus light.
damn, that blue hako :O
Pretty fresh looking. He's taken quite a unique approach with the build. Like, usually they're silver
Saw one of these at a car show in Sydney many years ago along with its ex-pat Kiwi owner, same colour and everything. I'm pretty the origins of the SSS badges were from the 510's and the interior looks pretty similar to the one I saw except for that steering wheels, the one in the video looks aftermarket with maybe a 200 B SSS centre? It's definitely from a later model Datsun anyway.
Awesome. Some in Oz! Thanks, Robert
@@wasabicars No worries, loving the content Dan!
Heh, these were sold as Datsun Finn´s here in Finland :D
They were slightly modified models to cope with the local conditions
Yeah, nice.
Dont worry Dan, the inference that they all look the same wasnt lost on me.
Should have had him start it up,Dan!
Oh! You are not wrong. Damn. I wish you could have told me at the time. Lol
That is a 1200 from my home town........ Timaru.
Wow! That is wild. Serious question. Do you know Cullimore's Radiator? I saw the sticker then did some googling, but they don't seem to be on socials.
I'll PM you some info.
I wish you would interview the car owners, like Automotive Anatomy channel.
I just had a look. Yeah, there's a massive difference. My Japanese isn't good enough for a fluent, coherent conversation. Even if it was, people would demand subtitles/translations... Pain in de butt. Nice idea for sure though
Dattos are siiiiiiiik af bro
Hahaha! Glad you like it
90hp in a car that light? It must fly!!!
What the hell was the mini ute to our left?
The front reminded me of an old skyline.
I'm on Facebook ill look now...
Yeah, cool little thing (though I completely overlooked it...) Might you use instagram? Or Facebook? I post half-dozen pics of similar Suzuki Mighty Boys just the other day
Greg Murphy the racer has a 1200 SSS.
Yes. I did see an article online of his. Very tidy unit
Sssuper nice
Haha! Thank you :)
#bestvidever
Haha. Thanks, mate
so was it for sale??
It was. About 20 grand though. :/
@@wasabicars 😲😥😖
So with all the exporting worldwide of JDM classics can you turn the tables and import all these western spec classics back into Japan?????
Definitely. I've seen several USDM Nissans and Toyotas in Japan.
@@wasabicars Cool I have a 77' Mazda RX-3 SP that I want to bring back. Do you know if they have to be running or can they be brought back as historical items? Thanks for the response!
Sorry to say that I'm clueless on the specifics. I suggest getting in touch with an importer. Try, Pacific Coast Auto in Yokohama
@@wasabicars Thanks mate I'll check them out!
Put my mate through the windscreen of my mum’s 1200 3 weeks after getting my license in 1984. Got sunstrike and hit a parked Ute. Bugger.
Oh damn. Ouch. I hope there was no lasting damage to the people involved. Yikes
@@wasabicars no major injuries fortunately. He still gets a bit nervous when I’m behind the wheel though 8-)
Were those kenmeri tails on an ra22?!?
Yes. But, a pretty standard type mod for that style of street car.
B110?
Certainly is
AntipoDean on Patrol. Nice Truple Uss. Nu Zeayland Axe Cent, bouy. ..
Hahaha. Thx, Dean
