The melody is from an Australian Waltz.
Amazing Grace is one of the 5 notes songs that came out of the black spiritual songs of the south, know as the pentatonic scale. They built their songs on those five notes. When you study music, you also come across what is know as white spirituals. Early white composers worked with that 5 note scale, back then known as the slave scale. The most famous one of them all to come out of those 5 notes, which can be played just using the black keys on a piano, is " Amazing Grace " written by John Newton, who happened to be a Captain of a slave ship, and penned the words to this song later. The melody is by an Unknown ! The reason this song has stood the test of time, is because God is reminding us as Christians, that no matter our color, background or greed. We are all connected by God's Amazing Grace ! Thank You Tommy and Bob, for sharing your God given Talent with us !

You should see him live. I did about 5 years ago. I was dead center of the stage and about15 feet from the stage. Man what a night. It changed my life

I second this. I saw him live in Dallas a few months back with Richard Smith and seeing Tommy live is a surreal experience. You're right...anyone who has not seen Tommy live, you NEED to make it happen.
I do believe you. I remember having listened to him (and spoken afterwards) in Sydney years ago. What a magical experience! I was truly spellbound.
I know it's sappy, but the first time I saw him live in 2012, when he came out and started playing the first song, I teared up a bit. Because I had watched him in videos for several years before that, and his musical expression and character already meant the world to me. Then when I saw him in real life, it was a wonderful moment of fruition, like "Wow, he really is that guy". Genuine. The real deal.

But, then again, scripture tells us that His ways and thoughts are far above ours. 1Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. How do you know you love Him? His word says, if you love Him, you will keep His commandments. Anyway, for humans, this is as great as it gets.

Recorded in 2007 -- but it is a lovely antidote to the tumults of 2022.
The modulation for the harmonica after the intro - so freakin smooth! Tommy always puts the music first.
It was awesome as usual. What some don't know is the harmonica player changed the chord Tommy started in. Tommy still nailed it.
If you notice you will hear that Tommy changed first. This may be because he is used to playing amazing grace in the first key but the harmonica player was more comfortable in the second key

That's done on purpose. It provides an emotional kick. In the saddest Western song ever recorded, 'When I Call Your Name,' Vince Gill does that 3/4's of the way through the song and it brings on the waterworks.

Might work. Might not. They might fight over who sits in the driver's seat, like when Eric played with Duane and their lead guitar competition wound up sounding like dueling mosquitoes playing all high notes. If it were a true collaboration with egos checked at the door, it would truly be something.

@@patricklundquist9869 the one thing Clapton seems to be really respected for is not having that type of ego, and I agree with the collaboration disaster with Duane, maybe that was the day Eric decided to let whoever he plays with lead the way. Crossroad festivals for instance held by Eric are made up of guitarist he admires or vice versa and Its always said Clapton let's them choose song arrangements and parts he accompanies. Not saying he cant steal those parts when he does them....but you're right it's usually egos that kill it. Tommy is melody chords picking bass line...accompanying himself lol. It would be hard to "add" anything and make it better.
Definitely two top of their league guitarists tho
Clapton couldn't hold a candle to him. Always thought he was an incredibly overrated guitarist and next to Tommy it would be even more apparent.
