Mealybugs are infact insects and considered sap sucking pests in gardening. They are soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. Dissolving this protective waxy layer will kill these mealy bugs. There are different entomological types of mealy bugs but in home gardening we are mainly concerned with root mealy bugs or ground mealybugs and the sap sucking leaf mealybugs. This is a complete step by step guide.
If you see mealybugs and ants together, then this is a serious issue and difficult to eradicate them. Because they have a mutual symbiotic relationship and these ants protect the bugs from predators and parasites. This also applies to aphids. The ants, especially the fire ants help mealybugs by carrying them to the tips of growing plants and in return they get to eat the honeydew excreted out of their anus.
Having said that, let’s look into the treatments:

Thhhaaaannnkkkkk yoooouuuuu sirrrr!!!!😍
.
Very good video. The mealybugs and ants I found today are all under the surface of the soil. No worries about killing plants, the garden is going to be redone. Toronto and plants are just starting to 'spring'. Cheers
Indian never stop impressing me in how many different topics they can help.
I tried the rubbing alcohol method and it works the best. I have a container garden, so it’s easy to check leaves everyday. Get them as soon as you see them to stop the infestation. I don’t spray though if there’s only a small amount. I dip cotton Qtip in pure rubbing alcohol and touch the mealybug, it dies instantly and the bugs stick to the q-tip. Just keep swiping each one off. 👍🏼
Certain plants are prone to them. I had 2 basil plants sitting next to each other. Mealybugs attacked the purple basil and did not bother the thai basil at all. I stopped growing purple basil and now grow lots of thai basil. I think the bugs hate it.
Thanx for ur
Advice will try it
My chillies nd ladyfinger gettng affected😬😁
I’ve been doing this too but the eggs are so tiny so need to do it weekly
This was such an extremely vital video, professionally made, live demonstration with very useful insights like the patch test, you have truly saved my garden and passion for agriculture, thanks again 💚✊🏾
I had mealy bugs, ants, and millipedes infesting one of my Hibiscus plants. Diatomaceous earth was the best and easiest treatment option. I'm now getting flower buds that area able to fully bloom without falling off and the whole plant is leafing out more. What a huge difference. And diatomaceous earth is safe and nontoxic for pets and children who may love to run around your garden as well.
Did the DE kill the millipedes? I have that problem with my strawberries as the millipedes love to snack on them!
@@chrissierestall5952 Yes, it will work on anything with an exoskeleton. I would be careful about getting in on/in the blooms as you don't want to hurt the bees going after the pollen, but I put a good layer on the soil and have only seen one slow moving millipede. I moved him to the ground to go on about his life.
@@jenniferbryne4809 thanks for the info... my husband is an apiarist so we’re careful with what we use as we have some bees here (hives). But my main problem her is millipedes more than anything else so just putting it around the plants would probably do the job well enough. Need to wait for the weather to dry up though...
How do u use DE
I tried neem oil and liquid detergent then used a toothbrush to gently brush the affected area. It worked. Plant is still healthy now. Thank you for your suggestions. They are effective.
In the spring I get aphids on my roses. Of course they like the new flower buds. I've tried spraying with neem oil and I've used hydrogen peroxide. Both work but they take time to kill off all the bugs. The most effective way that seems to keep them off all summer is to just put on a pair of thin gloves and wipe the buds and leaves with my fingers, squishing the aphids. This leaves a residue of aphid juice all over the tender parts of the plant where the aphids were and they don't seem to want to come back to the plants after that. After squishing them I usually spray the ground with hydrogen peroxide to kill any that have fallen. By June I rarely see any aphids on the roses. I can't say I've ever seen mealy bugs on my plants here in the South Okanagan, in Beautiful British Columbia!
I had a money plant which kept getting infected with millybugs, so I took it out of pot and sprayed the whole plant, including the roots using garden hose, removing every trace of soil. After I've sprayed the whole plant using solution of water and neem oil. No more millybugs.
They lived in the soil and kept coming back.
It's a good idea to burn the soil on the bonfire.
🍀
I had a very helpful Mantis that used to watch over my garden but the winds knocked him out and I can't find him anymore 😭 this video is very helpful because I began to see the population of pests grow since and I had to find a quick solution. Thank you💚
next video idea: how to grow millions of mantis in your garden
I use neem oil with turmeric powder mixed with water and sprayed it's working
Your explanation is brief and direct. I like it.
I take vinegar on a cotton swab and wipe the plant . It helped me❤️
Good that i'l try!
Vinegar discolored my plants
Its a differnce when you got a huge garden
Does spraying vinegar help?
O.M.G. Do not put vinegar on your plants. It is Acetic Acid and it ruptures plant cells.
I have the rootmealybugs and I will try the method you described. 2 cups of 3%hydrogen peroxide to 1 liter of water
I have just come across your channel and I love it! It’s the most informative I’ve come across. I’m a beginner in gardening and these are the most helpful videos. I’m going to watch all your videos and subscribe. Thank you!
OMG. This is what I was looking for! I have mealybug infestation on my Zinnias and I think the bugs and ants are spreading to my other plants.
Very useful video narrating many options of using different ingredients to eradicate mealybugs, white fly, aphids et.el.
Thanks a lot.
Excellent and beneficial for gardeners, farmer's and kitchen gardening ..God blesses u at every sphere of life
Cocktail mix (most powerful mixture)
500 ml of water
Half to 1 teaspoon of neem oil
1 cup or 250 ml of rubbing alcohol
10 drops of liquid soap
This has been the most informative piece Ive found in the enitre internet. Indian creators generally get dismissed for quality of content but this was very very useful ! SO many new methods !
I got mealybugs on my Jade plant, very minimal bugs will try your methods. Thank you for sharing!!
Neem oil with liquid soap has been working fine for me. 2 to 3 sprays does the work. Spray every 5 to 7 days
Arggh! Every week I get a new "lesson", lol. This week's "lesson" is mealy bugs (ugh they are ugly). I couldn't tell what I was researching (fungus/insect or both) so I went to your channel & immediately clicked on it & went out to slay little nasties. You Sir, are Saving my humble little garden-yard-THANK YOU😹👍👏
Totally agree. Love the tips shared here
very informative video as usual, I know the basic methods of traditional gardening, your videos are helping me to learn modern gardening
Thank you! I just bought a large plant and it turns out it has bugs. Great tips 👍 going to try them out
I need to do this for our pomegranate tree. The infestation is really bad. So far, I have been trying to prevent them from climbing the tree by wrapping the trunk with tape in reverse, like a glue trap. I will try to use your advice. Thank you
I found these mealybugs on two of my hibiscus 🌺 trees. GEEZ. Thank you for informative video. Im taking action immediately!! 👍👌
Nice solution for all plant in one video! Video not so long and interesting by adding all necessary steps. Great video! Good work
Thankyou so much for providing such useful information. Few days ago I saw My hibiscus plant infested with mealy bugs and tried soap and neem oil solution. Today I saw them again on tips of the plant and prunned it. But the problem is plant bears shrinking leaves. I don't understand why. So these insects hide in the creases and are difficult to be removed.
same problem with my mulberry plant i see mealy bugs again and wrinkling of leaves esp new leaves....
Got so happy seeing your video pop up! This is excellent :) thank you 😊
Thank you so much!
I was here for knowing how to get rid of aphids, I have a problem with aphids destroying my mung beans plants. Good video though on mealy bugs.
try the "cocktail method" in the video, it works for me... with aphids too
I do a combo method. If possible I’ll use the water spray method to remove majority of bugs off the plant first (I do this in bathtub/shower using the hand nozzle if it’s an indoor plant, which majority of mine are).
Regardless whether I use the water first I will apply the isopropyl alcohol using a cotton Swab or round on any visible bugs and wipe off the sticky sap they leave behind which ants love. And this alc literally dissolves/kills em on contact (you’ll see them literally melt/dissolve which is satisfying lol) and this works particularly well for floral blooms as youd want the bugs off to enjoy the flower rather than cut it (especially orchids or other slow blooming plants)
And last I spray the plant with the cocktail solution he mentioned to get any remaining unseen bugs and the soil if needed or eggs that I can’t see as a preventative treatment. they won’t like the scent or taste of the ingredients in that cocktail especially if you use dr bonnes peppermint or tea tree natural soap (dish soap may have some weird additives your plant may not like) so spot test he mentioned is a really good idea.
Repeat if needed hopefully you only need the alcohol for small spot treatments if any remain or return.
Ps I’m lucky to never have seen a mealy bug in real life lol but aphids are my problem. I think they live in the tree in front of my balcony or the garden outside the condo building and travel up to my floor with ants as the video mentioned.
I think I have the same problem! It’s so frustrating. My 3rd floor balcony has more aphid issues, gnats, mosquitos and horrible no-see-Una that infect my plants and me, than I’ve ever had anywhere. I just moved here & the wonderful balcony life I used to have sucks. There is a huge oak tree that faces my balcony that I think attracts these damn plant killers / people biting bugs. 😔
I had these bugs on huge hibiscus trees in yard. Pruning was the only way to deal with this.
I used alcohol thing . Had to prepare 50 Ltrs liquid though. Battery sprayer and hired help was all I needed . And it worked. I see few every few months. Used same concoction. Try using this when u see fresh infestation.
I love your channel and videos :) I only started growing plants in pots in my apartment 1 year ago. I’m in a tropical region and those white pests are all over my hibiscus. The spray they gave me at the gardening store didn’t work so I’ll try those methods and see which works best. I’ll be back to tell you which one was efficient :) thank you for such quality videos.
Any luck?
So results?
My plant died y’all lol I had tried the peroxyde and alcohol methods but they kept coming back. Probably because of the persistent presence of ants around my balcony. Idk 🤷🏽♀️ so I just grew a new parasite free hibiscus and that one is doing well 😅
@@saroliaada6883 Sorry to hear that. I hope the new one does better for you. 👍🏻
I went crazy one day when I see meally bugs almost everyday on my larkdaisy that I kiled them using my bare hands. Picked them up, rubbed & pinched them with my hands. Haha. 😂 They are annoying.
Really a big problem... Vl try these solutions and get back for sure... Thanx for sharing...
Your guidance is so good from that time in which time I seen first this channel!!😁
I usually use Castile Soap and water for them, but these are some great tips.
I was just wondering if I could use Castile soap. Thank You!
Excellent tips and I like you cover all possible scenarios 👍 thanks

Hello sir all your tips are very effective and easy to follow thanks for guiding us.sir i have a small garden now i face a problem the soil are heavily infested with small black insects and many pots have this ,pls give a remedy to solve this and help my plants.
Thanks. I always mix neem cake powder in potting mix. Also use good quality compost which is fully decomposed. You can now try adding neem cake powder by raking the top soil and water your plants using hydrogen peroxide as shown in video.
Thank you for the video sir. Very informative. I water my plants with neem oil solution every week. I water the soil till it comes from under the pot.
Have read that eventually the roots will take in the neem solution to the whole plant and pests will not attack it.
Please advise.
Thanks. Yes it works by systemic action through roots by many plants.
perfect tune and excellent information, thanks
i just used isopropyl alcohol which is just a hand sanitizer..and it works awesome ..that white bug is tutning to grey colour &died ...thanku so much

Thank you for your informative video. It is helping me to get rid of the mealy bugs in plant pots. However I have now found them everywhere in my garden, even on large trees. Do you know of a solution for a large garden infestation?
Thank you so much...very helpful video
wow very informative video.. thanks for sharing
Thank you for your videos very helpful!!! My hibiscus tree is still yellowing some but its still putting out flowers. I did however kill one of my bushes for over spraying and overr fertilizing. ☹
If replacing rubbing alcohol for hand sanitizer, what quantity to use?
Wow nice educating video. Thank you so much, I'll give it a try.
Is there any method that can deal with nematodes and fusarium wilt in Hypericum crop??
i gave up trying to battle aphids on my hibiscus plants. got tired of buying aphid plant spray from homedepot. and then one day these little birds moved in nearby. the birds ate all the aphids... and no more problem
Very good, informative video on getting rid of mealybugs that we can reach. May I ask how to get rid of mealybugs that are high up in a plant where I cannot reach to spray them?

I am suffering from the problem of grasshopers in my garden. What can be done to get rid of grasshopers?
Also for mealybugs and aphids, what are your views on using biopesticides like Metarhizium anisopliae, Verticillium lecanii.
Thanks.
Grass hoppers hate neem oil on leaves.
I have no experience with these bio pesticides.
Also try chilli or pepper pesticide shown here - ua-cam.com/video/Ogxm7unXVQc/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing.
I use high pressure sprayer water disturb the whiteflies everyday. And it's works
😜🤭😅
So, I'm here because I knew there was white stuff on my fruit (atis/sugar apple), and I still opened it and started to eat it, however some white flakes fell onto the table and when I was going in for the next bite, two of the white dots started moving... I internally panicked... quickly spat out what was in my mouth and drank water and ate chocolate cookies!! Now I'm here for revenge on those little critters who wouldn't let me enjoy my fruit in peace :)
I tried Neem oil alone. Will try cocktail now
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏9
Is this effective?
@@jhumurpaul3825 very effective
@@jhumurpaul3825 neem is never effective in my experience. I think it is an advise that people tell one another until it becomes a standard solution but it doesnt work. I have tested it by experiment on mealybugs in a jar.. it just doesnt work.
Excellent presentation, thank you !
Thank you
Thanks a lot. I am fed up with mealybugs. i used detergent solution in water and sprayed it on Mary gold plant but within 3 hours i noticed plants leaves becam dry and finally whole plant was damaged and dried soon.
Yes the same thing happened to me. I would not recommend a soap solution to get rid of mealy bugs. I used this on my plant and it killed the plant before it killed the mealybugs. I read that soap water may actually be toxic to plants if thrown at the rooms/ on the soil
Good stuff. Thank you
Very impressive 👏 and helpful 👍 thanks

Hi, which solution did you find the most effective?my mulberry tree is also mealybug infested😢
Watch the plants regularly. Try to remove them in the initial stages itself by using any one of the methods. I tried few; they work fine. Simultaneously try to eradicate the ants also.
What worked for you ? My hibiscus are getting attacked by them too
Diatomaceous earth worked the best for me and was super easy.
