@@JDA2790That’s awesome to hear. But if it’s an issue with the sensor and this is simply a software fix/patch would that mean that the photo quality is affected when the blue is processed out? How is the quality of your night shot mode?
@@jmp4375 Due to the weather, I haven’t been able to get a shot of the stars, but from my limited testing, it seems that so far it’s the same or maybe better- definitely not worse. I’ve tested the ISO at multiple levels by making it darker, and at every level, it’s completely free of blue lines and looks great.
I purchased my 16pro about 3 weeks ago and did have the blue line issue. What I found interesting was if I dropped the exposure between -0.7 to -1.3 stops the blue lines would disappear and if I used a 'pro camera app' rather than the standard one, it also disappeared. 6:12 definitely some blue lines in that shot - but much much better than before. I’m looking forward to the iOS 18.2 update regardless. Thanks for all your hard work and effort. Have a DSLR but with the advancements in phone cameras Ive been hoping my next phone will completely replace the wee Sony compact point and shoot I take around. I admittedly only update my phone every 4 or 5 years. Given that even the 15 pro max would give a massive leap in capabilities whilst saving a few quid. After watching your earlier videos I was undecided whether to go for the 15pro max or the 16pro or pro max Think you’ve helped me commit to the 16pro or 16pro max. Need to see if the latter is just a little too big, if it is i’ll ask Santa to bring the 16pro. Disappointed Apple initially misled so many loyal customers that spent so much hard earned cash on their products but good that ultimately they didn’t bury their heads in the sand over this issue and have tackled it head on. Also it will be interesting to see what other software updates can improve the capabilities of the phone and camera over the coming months and years. Love your work!
I just updated my 16 Pro to iOS 18.2, and tested the 30-second exposure with camera lens on the table on top of a totally black microfiber cloth. Nothing changed, I am still getting either red or blue hues in the image. Did the same thing on an iPhone 12, and the image is totally black.
They must roll it out slowly. Apparently I'm all up to date with 18.1.1 with the iphone 13 Pro Max. I actually upgraded my old iphone 6 to the 13 Pro Max 2 months ago after watching your night mode photography videos.. Even went out and got the tripod from Kmart and lashed out on the $25 one. haha. I took some pretty good shots of that comet last month and some good ones of the Milky Way here in Toowoomba. I'm loving it. EDIT: watching this video on a 48" TV I can see blue lines in the totally dark photo on the 16 which you show at the 6:05 mark. Primarily down on the water and on the bank. It definitely is better. Nothing like what it was before. But it's still there. Which proves its a software thing.
I just bought an iPhone 15 pro max for this problem should be delivered tomorrow. Should I return it and get the 16 pro max? Coming from an iPhone 12 Pro.
Yes. My 16 pro is a better phone. Much better battery life than my 15. The camera control button is not really great on the 16 but overall the 16 is a decent upgrade
Some of the 15 pro and 16 pro that were all good now have the blue mess after 18.2 update, so who knows. If they both have this issue, I would say 16 pro. But honestly, they need to fix the blue mess instead of adding it to more devices.
I had no problems until today updating to the official IOS 18.2 release. Before all i had was very tiny almost unnoticeable hot pixels and it was only like 4. After the update my entire screen is blue and camera is EXTREMELY laggy. 😀
well least it shows it was not hardware like you thought and I guess why apple was stopping swapping them, and more software related. Well it can still be within spec ie the hardware but it could be a software issue. Same as you can have a PC within spec but some bit of software not working, it does not mean the pc is faulty.
Great job Shayne! You’ve managed to move the monolithic beast! That’s incredible work thanks to your commitment to the issue! That’s what perseverance does, and I’m glad you did it! Even if it’s not inch perfect for everyone, it is certainly better! Fingers crossed this issue stays resolved!
Not nearly anything like they were prior. To be honest, you dont see them on the phone. I still dont see them on the phone. Can see them on a monitor. But nothing like before. Easily edited out now. Pic in video are unedited.
@ when I watched this on a cheap LCD TV that had washed out blacks it was clear as day. Blue lines were obvious. When I rewatched it on my phone it was harder to see and I can only see the difference in the really dark areas. But watch it on a LCD screen and you’ll see what I mean.
@@aussieadventurenerd8137 Oh I can see them on the larger screen. They are so much better than what they were. They are easily edited out too. I think this is as good as its going to get with this phone.
Did you really have to? Really? No one else noticed... Now after updating to 18.2 I also have blue lines, sometimes even red lines. Before that I had a perfectly black image. :(
Simply, if the pattern is consistent then subtract some blue from appropriate pixels before saving. Of course you have much more intelligent ways to do this on the current phones
@@AdiCherrysonI’d say that it’s more of rewritting parts of algorythm that was responsible for processing image data as it probably was wrongly reading sensor data in black or dark shades. It processed the data as blue haze, even when there was no light or color at all.
@@damianroll-popawski5803 in that case you would have this effect on every phone, no? I’m not an expert on image processing but why an algorithm would read data differently in this oscillating pattern?

Not part of the developers beta program I am just a public beta tester… Downloaded iOS 18.2 RC2 today it's still daylight here so I can't test it on night skies however I did shoot it into a black T-shirt and all I can tell you is that it's much worse! My entire screen is blue a little bit of black stripes in it but previous testing while running iOS 18.1.1 it was a little bit of blue on one end we can say at the bottom if you were in portrait mode. Shayne, have you done the T-shirt test and just to clarify are you running the developers beta or are you running the full release of 18.2? It's not available in Canada and reports indicate that the release that was posted today which is October 10 in Ottawa Canada are that beta RC2 was released today not the full update
Stop with thinking that the t-shirt test is going to show you the problem. It will only show you where to look if there is a problem. Go and take some photos. Then see if you have the problem still. I still see very small amount of lines on a monitor, but cant see it on the phone. Its easily edited out though.

Blue lines still there. They made picture darker, if you watch 6:27 on monitor with higher brightness you will see. Poor Apple, definitely matrix issue
The users saying there's not a problem should be thankful for you and others finding the problem and not letting Apple get away with it. Great achievement, hat off to you!
It was never a sensor issue. Proof is that if you shoot at PRO RAW 30 sec exposure, you will get (18.1.1) blue aurora all around the photo. However if you then go and edit the photo in the gallery or lightroom, then BOOM, the image is CLEAN without any blue aurora anywhere. I was convinced from the beginning that it was software related also because the blue aurora effect was never consistently appearing. Sometimes it appeared all the time while at other random moments that i tried the long exposure in pitch dark, the photo was clean...

I dont own one, but tested an iPhone 16 Pro Max at Apple Store by pressing its camera to the back of my phone. Unfortunately test ended up with the blue lines. Yup, Ive checked the software version, it was running on 18.2. It seems like ill pass 16 pro max, and wait for 17…
They are still there chief 6:28
Thanks Shane. Will still keep my 15 PM. ;-)
Did you happen to update to 18.2? Just asking because a lot of people even with 15 pro max that went to 18.2 now have the same issue.
I stayed on 18.1 and my 16 pro is all good, my girl went to 18.2 and now has the issue along with most who went to 18.2 on 15 and 16, it’s pretty wild.
If it can be added it can be taken away, hope they fix it lol
@@willbelial3775 I have noticed aberrations since. I'm now not convinced it is a lens or sensor quality issue. Perhaps it's the software? Wouldn't be the first photographic image processing bug.
Thanks for this!
Merry Christmas from Apple Shane 👍🏻😊
Thanks for all your hard work and effort. Have a DSLR but with the advancements in phone cameras Ive been hoping my next phone will completely replace the wee Sony compact point and shoot I take around. I admittedly only update my phone every 4 or 5 years. Given that even the 15 pro max would give a massive leap in capabilities whilst saving a few quid.
After watching your earlier videos I was undecided whether to go for the 15pro max or the 16pro or pro max
Think you’ve helped me commit to the 16pro or 16pro max.
Well this is good news, I’ve had my 16pro since day 1 of the release. I was offered a replacement phone by apple but didn’t go through with it. 👍
I still think I'll put off upgrading my i12pm until next year.
The left photo with caption says iPhone 16. Tons more stars
It’s also good to mention that 16 registers the water, where 15 does not show it that much.
iOS 18.2 isn't available yet. Only on beta
@@conalhendry I did mention that in the other comment😉
I hope this fix the problem on my iPhone 15 Pro max
I had no problems until today updating to the official IOS 18.2 release. Before all i had was very tiny almost unnoticeable hot pixels and it was only like 4. After the update my entire screen is blue and camera is EXTREMELY laggy. 😀
yep same at you. i had a black screen before update now i have a blue sheet over my screen. 16 pro.
Same here. My photos used to be pitch black, but now they’re full of blue vertical bands… It’s even worse than what’s shown in Shayne’s videos. 😖
well least it shows it was not hardware like you thought and I guess why apple was stopping swapping them, and more software related. Well it can still be within spec ie the hardware but it could be a software issue. Same as you can have a PC within spec but some bit of software not working, it does not mean the pc is faulty.
It’s 100% a hardware issue. Software has hidden it.
I could see the blue lines very clearly on all the iPhone 16 photos in this video. How are you not seeing them?
Back in business 🎉
I saw this update and had to come see your channel. So happy that this was a software issue rather than a hardware issue.
Did you really have to? Really? No one else noticed... Now after updating to 18.2 I also have blue lines, sometimes even red lines. Before that I had a perfectly black image. :(
Heaps of people noticed. The problem exists again, but not as bad. Probably the worst phone apple has released in some time.
I updated, but doing the phone on desk test still gives a completely blue picture sadly :(((
I got 18.2 today and did the test where you put it face down and make sure it's dark. I still get blue streaks but it's not as bad as before.
I'd like to know exactly HOW a software fix has covered up this problem!?
I’ve still got the issue. It’s just slightly less blue on the face down test.
So they solved it but why was it an issue so some devices and not on others 😵💫
Actually I still see the blue lines on last picture between 16 and 15 look at picture well you gone see it
6:34 - iPhone 15 Pro looks worse. Look top in the middle where the tree is. It's blue on 15 Pro. Also 16 Pro has more detail. Just look at the tree branches.
So it was software issue after all. New sensor, new software to be written.
Thank goodness for that! :D
thx for stressing Apple, i hope we will see now more 16Pro videos again 😀
@@ShayneMostyn OK, good stuff. Looking forward to a night test! Interesting though that my son has the identical phone and has no problems whether it's a dark sky or the black T-shirt Test… I guess we're all on the same page as long as it works and we're not sacrificing anything through software manipulation.
@@cliffordbellis7189 Yep, I still think there is hardware issues for some phones. This update simply hides it. Even after this "fix" I dont think this is a better night mode phone than the 15Pro. Its much better than it was, just a downgrade from the previous model.
@@ShayneMostyna downgrade from ALL previous models going back to iPhone 12.
It’s good they fixed it! So it was a software problem after all!
interesting, my software say I am updated with 18.1.1
He’s on 18.2 RC (Release Candidate). Technically, it’s still Beta.
@ ohhh gotcha! That makes loads of sense. Thank You ☺️!!
That's good news!!
At last I now don’t feel like I have a dud 😊
its unfortunate that you had to deal with clouds... perfect case of the number one rule of astronomy: If you get something new for looking at the stars, the weatherman will be predicting clouds and rain! xD
HAHAHA so true
How is it possible that a simple software problem can do this problem for so long? and that it's not the same for everyone?
possibly it was not an SIMPLE software update 😂 and as well possibly not prio 1 😊
The plot thickens! 😃
Thank god!
Amazing
My replacement phone fixed the issue, one month later the problem is now on my replacement phone, I genuinely can't say if this is hardware or software issue anymore.
Thank you Shayne! I don't think apple would have made the effort to find a fix for this without your efforts. Well done!
Mine is even worse after the update 😞
I know someone who has that problem.
Blue lines still there. They made picture darker, if you watch 6:27 on monitor with higher brightness you will see. Poor Apple, definitely matrix issue
18.2 and it's still blue, even worse though.
It looks like a software patch for a hardware issue.
The blue steaks are now red streaks. This is not over unfortunately
