H/H match update: ... Today's action: The writing was on the wall (or at least on Gene's little card) for our champion: There was no way on Earth that four celebs would all give the same answer to that chicken question, so it didn't really matter what he said. But at least he goes home with $600 and a lifetime memory of kissing Betty White. So a new champion prepares to face the Super Match. (Trivia note: Brett commented that the champion resembled Penny Marshall and Gene made a comment about remembering her. Of course, Penny appeared in the #4 seat for episodes 306-310 back in 1974.) Today's audience match question: "Bella _________ " (My thoughts: donna, Abzug, and Lugosi -- yes, I know. But spelling doesn't count here, and if I remember, Bel(l)a Lugosi actually came up once before as an audience answer even though it was misspelled.) The celebs: Richard (donna & Lugosi), Betty (Abzug), and Dick (no answer). The choice: Abzug The answers: Abzug, Donna, Lugosi Well, our new champion has to settle for $100, but at least she has a shot at the H/H. I'm betting she's a card-carrying member of Team Richard... Nailed it! Richard is on a mini dry streak. He's only matched once in his past five attempts. Also, it's already "Thursday" (or the fourth day of the current panel week at least) and we haven't had a single successful H/H match yet. So I'm betting Richard and this champion manage to pull off a win today! Today's H/H question: "__________ and nail" (We recently had hammer and _____, so I guess this is the flip side of that one. Hammer and nail is the obvious choice. Should be an easy win!) That's weird. Richard wrote an answer and promptly turned the card over and set it to his left and immediately wrote a second response which he immediately filed. She says "tooth" and nail, which I have to admit is a great answer. Once hammer came to mind, I quit thinking about it, but I was clearly wrong to think "hammer" was the definitive answer. Now I'm wondering what Richard thought of! Thank goodness the contestant was matching Richard and not me! "Tooth." Richard scores his 175th H/H match. Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.4% (11 wins in 21 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.4% (24 wins in 58 attempts). Richard - 40.9% (175 wins in 428 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 734, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
When I heard the question, I thought that if I were the sixth-seat celeb (they often give weird answers), I'd say her dress was on fire! I knew it wouldn't be a match, but I thought it'd be funny. Then Richard comes up with that same answer, and he surely knew it wasn't going to be a match... Richard rarely gives deliberately non-matching answers, only when he doesn't want a certain contestant to win.
I don't know why Brett gets so much hate around here. I think she is a great comic foil against Charles. Maybe not intentionally, but she sets him up for some great one liners at her expense and she has the humor to laugh it off. Charles does a hilarious job of canceling her out and moving the show forward. She also provides great fodder for Gene who handles it like a pro. Without her I think the comic energy of the show would be a lot lower and boring. So I'm all for Brett.
I loved Brett when the show was on in the 70s and I love her now. She's got a great personality. Somehow she makes me feel like she'd be a loyal friend who would fight for you and stand by you no matter what. She's the brash, crazy auntie I wished I had living next door when I grew up. Frankly, judging from all the comments in all the videos from episode #1 to now, she's clearly the most popular celebrity of all - no one panelist has inspired as many comments as she has. (Richard runs a close second.) I get that tastes change, and Brett doesn't quite mesh with today's internet/UA-cam audience, but you know what? She wasn't meant to. She was part of a programming choice by Goodson/Todman who knew and understood the daytime TV audience of the era. It amuses me when people today write that the show "would have better off" without her-as if they know better than Goodson/Todman what those daytime TV audiences of the mid-1970s wanted and liked! Frankly, if, instead of Brett, they had hired an attractive, demure, sweet-as-honey celebrity for that #2 position, one who pretty much just played the game and only spoke when spoken to, I doubt the show would have made it this far...
@@kevansf I'm glad you are a Brett fan. I think most people secretly are and would realize the show wouldn't be as fun without her. She actually DOES remind me on an aunt I had, that's probably why I like her way.
@@kevansf That's a perfect commentary on Brett and those that don't "get" her humor are probably too squashed by so-called political correctness ! I agree, she does seem like she'd be a loyal wonderful friend, may she continue to be the brash wonderful Auntie in the Spirit world where she now resides 🙂
Wow, is Denise not a dead ringer for Penny Marshall? They could be sisters. But Penny's career wouldn't take off for another couple of years, with the success of Lavern and Shirley.
I think she could take Klugman's verbal abuse, as well as give him hell right back. Both of them being such strong personalities, I think that's what drew them towards each other.
I know this isn't a popular answer, but Brett doesn't bother me half as much as the celebrities who give blatant, in your face wrong answers to easy questions. They answer questions out of their own selfishness to get a laugh, or worse to sabotage a contestant. Idk know which. Brett, to me at least seems to get it right.
@@Imnotyourmamaluke But overall she brought way more attention to herself than the celebrities gave blatantly wrong answers. Plus she wasn't as funny as she thought she was.
@R Whether she was doing it of her own volition or because she was just following orders she was still obnoxious and annoying and distracting. The only credit I will give her is if the producers actually told her to be that way she did an absolutely amazing fucking job.
