- We have had requests for this video after publishing our video on making up meal packs for camping and having them ready to grab and go for camping. We show our freezer organization and inventory strategy for both our freezers.

I absolutely love your organization system and would gladly adopt it for myself but, I have a husband, God love him, that does not help keep track of inventory as i would like. Therefore, I, unfortunately spend wasted time going through my stockpile monthly, sometimes weekly, to keep up. Unfortunately he doesn't agree in my having a few months of food and water stockpiled. He thinks its unnecessary. But I do it anyway. I have children and grandchildren that I want to be able to survive in the event of a disaster and if I'm not around. Thank you for sharing. Organization turns junk into inventory. hehe. Sometimes a sale brings in an object that can be lost to the cavern later to find it freezer burnt because you forgot it was there, the list is an effort worth taking for sure!

That's what I do. Ialso keep a clip board with inventory notations of which color and brand bag. It is the only way I have found too. The bags also shrink in the space they take as the product gets used.
I use large plastic (pet food sacks)shopping bags to organize my chest freezer. Easy to remove to access things on bottom. Not perfect but better than leaving everything individual.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I have 2 chest freezers, and I've been toying with ditching those for uprights. This video has sealed the deal for me! I do have 2 questions:
1. How big are each of those freezers?
2. Do you like the shelves or the drawers better? and why?
Smoked beans? Sounds intriguing. Are they homemade and, if so, is there a video for that? Great organization, by the way. Something I need to do.
Pam and Jim: To the freezer discussion. I like upright freezers for their convenient access. The problem with most new upright freezers is they are self defrosting. A self defrosting freezer has a heating element built into the exterior of the unit. This heating unit comes on periodically determined by the manufacturer. This self defrosting feature partially thaws the foods located close to the sides, top and bottom, then refreezes those foods. The refreezing diminishes the overall quality of the food and shortens the foods lifespan. I may be old fashioned, but I want my food to remain solidly frozen until I am ready to use it and want it to last as long as possible. It just isn't that big of chore to defrost the freezer 1-2 times yearly. I move the frozen food to an adjacent freezer which only lets it be exposed to room temperature for a few seconds.
My husband was listening to this as I was watching it and he said exactly what you did, that you do not want a self defrosting freezer.

Do 69y find it a nesicity to put everything 8n bins? Is this and organization technique? Or is this for camping? 5x
Perfect timing. One of my neighbors is moving out of state and doesn't want to bother with taking their extra freezer they keep in the garage. They were kind enough to ask if I wanted it, of course, I said yes. They were happy not to have to deal with it. We "blessed" each other. I now have two freezers. The extra freezer allows alot more choices for meals and sides. I love how you have your lists on the outside by shelf. Thank you for sharing!♥🙏

Years and years ago we moved into a house that had a big upright freezer in the garage. I loved it. You could SEE what was on the SHELVES! When we moved eventually, we had to leave it. We now have a small chest freezer that presents all kinds of organizational problems if you want to do it inexpensively. I have tried EVERYTHING short of a expensive drawer system. What i have found works the very best is colored reusable"fabric" grocery bags. I color code them, i.e., red for chicken, green for pork, etc. I keep a color chart on the front of the freezer. I still have to move things around, but it is soooo easy with the bag handles, and the shape of the bags conforms to the shapes underneath, and gives me a lot of space. It is not perfect, but it is easy and cheap and works better than anything else i have tried.

When I keep my freezer inventory I just put a | for each item I have. As I use an item I put a / through the first | on the list. If I add more packages I just add additional | to the end of the line. I find I can use one list for a long period of time because I’m not dealing with numbers. I’m learning so much from you both. You’re so well organized, and are an inspiration to me. We have a huge chest type freezer, so I struggle somewhat with keeping it organized. However, I use baskets with handles to set down in it and store food by type. Your videos have taught me so much! Thank you too, Jim. You do a great job on the camera!
Pam and Jim: Since your freezers are not in your house do you have monitors on them. My hubs installed sensors on our freezers that send a message to his phone when they get below a set temperature. I don't think they were very expensive. I think they are a very valuable add-on for all freezers. Your freezers like ours has hundreds of dollars of food stored in them and it is important to know when they aren't doing their jobs before the food inside is melted. Your organization of the freezers is enviable. Good Video!
My deep freeze is in the basement. I keep an inventory similar to this. I used to only keep it down with the freezer. Thus time when I did it, I brought the copy upstairs and put it on the side of my fridge in the kitchen, that's were I meal plan and make the grocery list, so I thought it made more sense for me to have it closer to where I'm doing those things. Then I don't have to go to the basement every time. It only took me like 5 years to figure this out! 😂 I'm a slow learner I guess.
Very nice organization Rose. I see your garage is well insulated. I was trying to figure out if y’all had insulated the roll up door panels but it wasn’t very clear to see. That would be another great way to bring down your food storage area temperature. Happy Trails!

It took 1 year to convince my husband we needed a freezer. Then a blessing happened, our state issued a refund to its residents. I asked again for the freezer he finally agreed. I knew immediately I wanted bins for separating beef, chicken, pork, fish, misc items. Your inventory lists make sense, I will sort that out soon. By the way, you look so pretty wearing that blouse. Great discussion today.
Is the Roux labeled? Just wondering if anyone but you will know what it is.
Love your system! I keep a magnetic dry erase list on mine so when I see I need to restock something I add it to the list, then take a picture of the list with my phone before shopping

Very nice! I had a chest deep freeze and bought stacking bins. Wrote on the top and side of the end to know what was there . I did list each item and that would have been very helpful!! GOALS!

Interesting. It would seem you must buy meat that is not frozen. I will have to consider how to employ a system for meat you purchase in bulk from a butcher (half a cow, a whole hog, etc). Does anyone have any ideas about doing this type of organization effectively?

We have 3 upright freezers, 1 chest freezer, and 2 fridge freezers, and my inventory is in my head; if you name a food, I’ll take you right to it and always know how many are in there, same with our pantries.

Oh Dear! My husband and I were looking at that same freezer at Costco but decided not to get it. 😢 I think we were thinking of wall space and not so much being more organized. Living in a townhouse has its disadvantages for sure. We do have a big garage though. It looked like I could organize my food so nicely like yours in those shelves. We already have a chest freezer full of food and I absolutely do not like a chest freezer. We elected to get one of those small dorm size freezers and it fits in one of our cabinets in garage nicely. Not big enough though. Ha! We had a big upright in NH but left it there when we moved. Big mistake. Hope the new owners of our home like it. I really do not know why we bought this smaller chest freezer but we did. Hah! We were not thinking at the time about food storage for sure. You are so organized and I love it. Makes life so much easier. Being organized is a fun thing to do in my opinion. You do have a lot of food stored.

I try to portion foods in my upright freezer, but it's hard because my husband works out of state, so I'm usually alone most the time. I have to separate things for single serve and meal size when he's home. I really need another freezer lol Another great video, thank you :)
I love the way you organized your standing freezers. I have been struggling with my chest freezer I love it but it's a challenge to keep it organized and know what's inside.
