For those curious, it was later determined that the birds that Sully Sullenberger and Jeff Skiles' aircraft flew into was a flock of adult Canada geese. These geese are far bigger than anything the CFM International CFM56 was ever tested for. The Airbus A320's engines also ingested two geese each. My personal belief is that when the engines were destroyed, the ACARS signal jammed, and was reading the same last signal on repeat, giving the illusion that the engines were still running. Given all the circumstances that they faced, I have absolutely no doubt, and I can say on behalf of Sully and Jeff, that landing in the Hudson River was undoubtedly, without question, 100%, the right decision to make. And they landed perfectly. Now, as for how this situation will be prevented, as recently as 2011, it has been confirmed that radar is being detected with the ability to detect aerial objects the size of hummingbirds. Of course, a lot of work is needed to isolate other objects like ships and buildings, but hopefully one day, air traffic control facilities across the world and even the cockpits of planes will have this radar technology and reduce the risk of bird strikes, and the damage they cause.
Skiles said that they were pretty lucky in a lot of aspects. The Hudson River usually has pretty big swells. On that day they had the fortune of it being completely calm and flat. They also happened to land right where the ferry boats make their crossing. Not taking anything away from what they did, those are his words, not mine. Probably just him being humble.
There is no way a plane that size is dodging a birdstrike, it's not a fighter jet. A better technique would be to use directed energy or sonic weapons around the runway to eliminate a threat to human life before it strikes the jet.
I was working for a daily newspaper in Alabama at the time, and when this hit the "bulletin" wires, before the networks broke in to show the footage, first thing I said was, "I'll bet that captain was a fighter pilot. That landing took the kind of nerve fighter pilots have." I was right. God bless this gentleman and the whole crew. Their actions saved many, many lives.
He was right! He's a great, great man! But everyone needs help🥰🥰🥰 It takes a Village. But he definitely deserves his props along with coworker for keeping their cool!!
The data analysist team made a huge mistake when they determined that one of the engine remained functional! Actually multiple people was negligent in there and none was held accountable for being negligent. It was multiple human error. The whole trial based on this fact.
Because this dramatized A real data analysist working for the Air Traffic and Safety organization would lose their job if they did their investigation this way.
It is always heartening to know how many people will join together to make the difference changing the improvable chance into actual reality all it takes sis a few good people to change a disaster into a miracle .
Sully and Skiles were absolute gods of the cockpit that day. I was just about to go into the FAA when this happened and when I went to the ATC academy this was an a required lesson on how ATC can help pilots in distress.
IRL, they didn't, actually. All this tension was just for the movies. They tested with and without reaction time, they waited to publish the report until the engines were recovered, and there was never any doubt that Sully did the right thing from the get go.
If anyone actually did this in real life, they would lose their jobs because it would harm the reputation of the Board on being through with their investigations. Lawsuits would be unavoidable. So this is just movie drama
It's funny how people's minds become so quiet so clear when faced with life and death. A few years back, my car had gremlins and I went totally off the side of a mountain. My car was hanging upside down from tree branches. I was fine, some minor bruises luckily, but I remember going into a sort of silent, calm place when all this was happening. I wasn't in fear at all, THERE WAS NO TIME FOR IT! haha
I am from Canada and we have way too many Canada geese here. Most of them fly south for the winter into the US. Can the US declare them a food crop? The meat is dark like duck but very tough. A good braise recipe should fix that though. Can you have a few chefs address the issue?
Unfortunately, Sully suffered PTSD thereafter and he took a new job in DHL as a passenger. He went missing after a plane crash for years. After survived from the plane crash and lived in an island for years and later on he was rescued. As he was a destroyer captain before in WWIII, he started a new career as a transoceanic container ship captain
2:00 Hahahaha! 155 people including yourself almost died and your best friend and co-worker just narrowly escaped having his career and reputation destroyed. Jerk.

So you're saying the US should invade Canada... I mean let's attack the problem at its source.
"Yes. I would've done it in July." Great Clint!!! Only a son of Leone can close a dramatic film so brilliantly.
That line was actually said by Jeff Skilles 😂😂

The fact that this serious moment ended with a joke
and best part, this happened in real life
That's usually how bad stuff "ends", with a laugh
@@RIPM201 I can't laugh at 9/11 😢
I think in this event it’s valid to finish with a joke because nobody got hurt or died
That is NOT a sentence.

Leave it to Skiles to add humor to a serious situation, a perfect ice breaking story when he meets people who ask.

Good feedback from Captain Sully about the X in the equation. Ex military pilots are always the best
Yes Lifehard, YES they are the best
Just absolutely incredible... 🥰

The birds died bro
see, those birds - they're a well known flight risk... (I'll see myself out.)

It's disgusting how quickly they changed their tone. They pegged them as guilty and liable until they proved they were innocent. Sad, just sad.

Unbelievable the hell they put this crew through in what is typically the FAA's default finding...Pilot Error.
