3T developed a 11 speed cassettes that start at a 9t sproket for the aqua blue sport team. They are usually paired with their road 1x (mechanical) groupsets (force1, rival1, apex1) but i dont see a reason why they would not work with a standard 2x 11 speed derailleur since the gaps between cogs are the same. So as long as you have an XDR freehub body and a long cage derailleur, you could just get that cassette and have a 2x11 with a 9-32 out back.
For the Di2 bar end junction question, I do it a bit differently than suggested here. If you cut the bar tape diagonally and wrap it with some electrical tape that's been cut in half long ways it looks really clean and there's very little risk that it will unravel. It's similar in concept to how you end the wrap near the stem, just with the pointy bit of the bar tape starting, instead of ending, the effort.
Apparently the pro's have had it set up successfully this way on occasion, but I believe Jon's right that the potential for noise/rubbing may be unavoidable in the not-too-sensible little-little crossover gearing.
@@georgehugh3455 I'm using mine with a single rear sprocket on a IGH. Still don't see why rubbing would be an issue though, it's more about the chain being able to make the shift.
@@Ed.R That does make a difference. If you consider the chain on a very small chainring trying to _get past_ a very large chainring on the worst angle (small-small), it makes sense.
Re : 52/34 Flynn - personally i'd give it a go, i've heard plenty of people who have used exactly this combination over the years and been fine. Shifting may need a little bit more effort on the up-shift to the 52 (and a bit more care) and the gap between the chain and the 52 when in the 34 and smaller cogs at the back would be worth checking - but the derailleur has more than enough to cope. If it doesn't feel good, or the chain rubs on the mech or outer chain-ring then you can always get a 36 at that point, but odds on you might not need it. Have a crack, let us know.
Regarding 52x34... I’ve been running the setup for over 18 months now and haven’t missed a single shift between chainrings. The easier gear for climbing the likes of Gibralter rd in SB Ca calls for the 34x28, but the descent needed something bigger. Made the switch from 36 to a 34 and I’ll never go back
A little tip for getting closer to the 7m rollout, use 50-34 chainrings with a 14-28 cassette (one gear locked out for 11 speed) which I believe is a 15 tooth and a 23mm tyre on the rear and it will be 6.99 m
On my training bike I have an Ultegra 10 groupset. When the Shimano levers had to be replaced, I mounted some Campagnolo ones (Chorus 10) which I had lying around. No luck. Combined with the Ultegra derailleur, only a few gears would work. However, a SRAM derailleur fixed the issue. Works like a charm. All gears come easy and clean. No idea why. Can someone explain that phenomenon?
I recently bought a wheelset (Zipp 404/808) and to be surprise it turned out to be a Campy rear hub. Chatted to former owner and some googling and seams ok to run a campy cassette with Shimano (10spd DA shift/105mech) its in my P2C. Seems to shift markedly better than previous SRAM cassettes
Hi Jon, I think it would have been helpful to explain derailleur capacity in terms of changing the gearing. The limit is mostly not the shifting performance but the capacity. And the last one could destroy your derailleur at once if you do cross chaining. People who run 52/34 and 11-32 as an extrem certainly do not use the full range of gears, if the pretend that such kind of customizing work on their bikes. Don‘t try that at home. The other thing I would like to mention is that the mixing of sram cassettes and campy derailleurs and shifters is limited by the difference of the sprocketdistances. It only works if the distance of the campy sprockets is the same as the sram ones. With 11 and 12 speed I doubt the Hans Christian Smolik tricks like manipulating the cable clamping or the sprocket distances by washers would suit the actual tolerances. Due to the blockdesign of the campy cassettes similar to sram, it could anyway only work with Miche cassettes. But would be interesting if CGN could measure the cablepulls and shiftingsteps of all actual groups.
@glen: assuming you are running an 11-28 cassette, you would get the same effect by fitting a 11-21 (if such a thing existed). The narrowest i'm aware of are 11-25 cassettes. That would have the same effect of fitting a 40T in place of the 34T.
@michaelfield it could also be a little bit of play in the hubs. Check if there is any plan in those hubs before you get a bleed cause that's an easier and cheaper repair then a full bleed.
Hi, John! I am a complete amateur bicyclist. I ride for pleasure, of course, with the occasional dream of being first in a sprint finish with the announcer screaming with excitement!!! ;) I am a 49 year old Physical Education teacher. I grew up watching the Tour de France - back in the day before cable when we were glad just to see a stage or two on NBC's Wide World of Sports. Although I thoroughly enjoy watching your show and learning what I can, quite honestly most of what you talk about is like another language to me. My question is: what would be the best bike for a rider like me? There are so many advances! I am totally confused! I just want a good bike, but I feel like I am missing out on so much. My budget - $1,000 - or less! Thank you! Lisa
@yo brobeans: axs with the 10-33 cassette and the 45-35 cranks has a range of 4,5:1 - 1,06:1. Whitch is the same range you get with a 50-34 crankset on a 11-34 cassette. And in case you are aiming for street cred you can also pair a 54-38 with a 12-36 cassette (lowest gear is a tiny bit longer though)
Campagnolo do a 11-34 cassette (chorus) 12 speed and a 48-32 front crank. But if you wanted harder gearing then put a 39-53 front crank so you will have a 39 to 34 at the easy gear and a 53 to 11 hardest gear.
#AskGCNTech Just built up Di2 setup (best way to wrap bar tape for junction box is to cut the start tape edge diagonally similar to how you finish the ends with the cut edge flush with the special plug. Looks great) My question is with synchro shift typically the front derailleur shifts before the rear compensates. This can cause a momentary high cadence (ratio too high) when climbing hills. I know I can change the shift points but is there a way to get the rear derailleur to change before the front changes or ideally rear change -front change-final rear change? Thanks - Shawn in Ottawa Canada
#AskGCNTech Hi John, I am using a budget-priced MicroShift 7 speed rear derailleur on my old, but fixed up, 26" mountain bike. The rear derailleur typically shifts flawlessly up and down the cogs, but when I go over bumps or perform a bunny hop, the indexing is disrupted. I usually have to turn the barrel adjuster in order to get it back in order. I've heard of ghost shifting over bumps, but this doesn't seem to be the case here, it just seems to go in between gears.
NEW SHOW/SEGMENT IDEA: do a wheel 2 wheel look at a bike from years gone by. E.g. the old GTs with the triangle by the seat post, a bike with the original SRAM road groupset etc
John can you please tell me if it is possible to setup a SRAM Force ETAP Axis groups to change like a Campagnolo right hand controller unit? The problem is that I am so use to using the right hand unit to change up the cassette into an easier gear but on the SRAM it sends me down the cassette into a harder gear. Can this be changed somehow to mirror the change of Campagnolo? Kind regards, Darren Hill
Do excuse my total lack of knowledge when it comes to Sram but wouldn't a Sram Red HRD leverset along with an XX1 casette which would have a range of 10-42 and then you would need to go for something like the X1 X-Horizon rear derailleur. Not 100% certain if that would would with the Sram Red levers but I am sure that @JonCannings would be able to keep me correct on that one! Hope that might help out?
Hi John! I've got a 2006 Trek Project One with Campy 10 speed rim brake groupset and want to know if I can run a Campy 11 speed cassette (Campy hubs will support 9-10-11 speed cassettes) with the SRAM Force or Red Etap shifters and derailleurs? I assume I'll have to use the Campy 11 speed chain. Thanks for your help.
#AskGCNTech hi Jon, Im a very small rider who's bike weighs 6.0kg with my garmin and bottle cages, hence i need to use lead for championship races to bring it up to 6.8kg, would i be better to put lead weights in the bottom bracket/spindle, or in the seat post, the reason i say this is will the dropped center of gravity of the lead in the BB Help cornering speeds and stability compared to the seat post, and would it be noticeable
Love the content, keep it coming! I am a larger rider who's knees are not enjoying grinding up the hills and whilst long term a few less kilos and more power is the answer, short term I need a bigger cassette, I have found a Rival 10 speed climbers kit to replace the SRAM Red rear derailleur and it comes with an 11-32 but will I need a new cassette for the turbo or will the longer chain be okay indoors, with less bouncing around etc than the road?
In my experience there is no need to tuck in the bar tape at the end of the drops. Just start it (tightly) right at the edge as Jon explained -- with or without a di2 system. I always wrap my bars this way and it never comes undone or gives me any issues at all.
@@harrysaunderson-warner4519 For the most part yes. My current ones (whatever came with my Cinelli cork tape) fit nice and snug with no modifications. But I have an older pair of chrome ones that I have to wrap the prongs in a couple layers of electrical tape to make them fit snugly, but that takes two seconds.
how to tell if my super record 11 rear derailleur is a medium cage or a short cage because I want to fit a 11-30t cassette can't find any pictures of something definitive.
#AskGCNTech Hi Jon, i have a 36/46t chainset with a BB386 bottom bracket. Is it possible to upgrade to a shimano 105 FC-R7000 36/52t chainset? Do I have to upgrade my bottom bracket as well and will the new one fit in my frame? I hope you can help me. Thanks for the great show.
Jon, I've got a large collection of bikes like yourself and herd that Campagnolo, Shimano, and Scram 11 speed cassettes gears are so close together that the index spacing are compatible, do you know any info on this.
HI guys, I love your show. I have a road bike with shallow section disc brake wheels at the moment, but I am tempted to upgrade them to a pair of deep section carbon aero wheels. However, this usually comes with a weight penalty, when the budget is limited :) . Now my #AskGCNTech question is: how much weight can I give up to get an aero advantage? Does replacing a pair of 1500g shallow section (17mm) wheels with 1700+ grams deep sections (40-50 mm) get me aero gains on flats?
I'm a bit confused with the junior gearing question, if 52x14 complies with the limits 50x14 would as well. You do give about 5% of rollout but unlikely to be a massive issue.
It's a huge disadvantage on any sort of downhill I struggle to keep up with the senior riders and I'm on 52x14 so to have even less would be horrible. So yeah without the full gearing he would just get dropped when it gets fast.
Help please! My rear wheel appears to have excessive play in it, ie when in place it can easily be shoogled from side to side. The qr skewers are tight and cassette is on securely. What else could be causing this? Are bearings done? Thanks
Hi Guys, I am considering a new bicycle next year and I love the look of the Integrated stems. I would like to take the bicycle on my travels, what I haven't been able to find is some information on how to pack them in to a hard shell bike box such as bike box alan, is there some give in the internal cabling to move the bars far enough to wrap around the top tube or around the forks. Thanks in advance Mark #AskGCNTech
Hi Jon, I got an ultegra macanical shift set. But I’m wondering if di2 of sram etap would be an option for me. What do I need to take in consideration when doing this upgrade and what are the advantages you know of. Thanks :)
Hello Jon, Hello from Vic , Australia. My son has just got an SL7 pro that comes with a 12 speed axs groupset. Next year he will be moving to U17 rollout of 7m and this is achievable with a 46tooth front chain ring and a 14 rear sprocket. 28mm tyres. Miche seem to have a 12speed 14-29 Primato but only for a campy freehub. will a Campy 12s cassette fit on a shimano 11speed freehub? or would you suggest another 12 speed 14 -29 cassette? thanks
John, great show. I have recently changed my chainrings out for compact. I am currently having problems with a couple strange clicks and noises. The main problem is that when I adjust the front derailleur cable tension to where the front shifts properly, I am unable to back the set screw off enough so that the chain doesn't rub on the derailleur. Its as though there is suddenly not enough travel in the front mech. This is on dura ace 9000 with Rotor 3d cranks. Any ideas? #AskGCNTech
@ im am about to buy my first road bike (i think im converting from mtb) and the shop i work in has a bike for sail which i can get for cheap, the only thing is there is a small amount of rust on the frame, what can i do about this? the rust is only surface (the rust is in a area which does not have much room to work on it as it is between the chain stays) and does not seem to be too deep, i also want to try to keep the paint as its a limited edition paint job thanks for the help!
Love the videos! I have a 2010 SRAM red group Set. Recently, on occasion when I try to shift, the rear derailleur does not respond. I keep shifting and eventually it will finally change gears. It doesn’t have this issue every ride however. It can go for a week shifting fine, then it reoccurs. Does that sound like a cable issue or something completely different? Thanks, Denis
Hi Jon, I am running Ultegra 11 spd mechanical on my Giant roadbike. When I am in the large chainring and any of the 3 smallest cogs, the front derailleur rubs very slightly. I can silence it by holding the brake lever inward, but obviously this is not practical. My question: should I tighten up on the barrel adjuster, or dial out the derailleur? Or both?
By holding the brake lever inward, you are basically doing the same the barrel adjuster would do. So try it out. If it doesn't work, then try the limit screws.
@@chrisko6439 I'd start doing that. If that doesn't work then also maybe this: I had to fudge around with non-round ring and rubbing and realized if you move up/down or tilt the FD (there are some spacers that do this) you can also run it on "wider" parts of the inner cage because it's not really just a rectangle inside, the inside dimensions vary.
I had the same problem. Tightening the barrel adjuster didn't work, because if i tightened it enough to not have it scrub, it wouldn't downshift properly. It solved it by bending the derailler cage outward slightly. Still some minor rubbing on the last cog under hard pedaling though.
ahoy there what would u say is wrong if my crank feels scratchy like it’s slipping or rubbing only when i pedal really hard, is it because i tilt the bike too much either side when i’m trying to get up to speed faster do u think that like focuses the friction inside it and wears it out? any ideas? cheers man!
Hi GCN, Thanks for the cool Channel you have. I have a Sram etap groupset with 11-28 cassette and use cheaper training wheels at the moment, such as Shimano RS. The problem I have whilst climbing is that in the lowest gear (smallest chainring and the biggest cog) the rear derailleur slightly rubs the spokes. The problem does not occur otherwise (when there’s no weight on the back wheel or when not climbing hard). So my question is whether the problem can be due to misplaced limit on the derailleur or wheel flex? I am pretty confident in the hanger not being bent. Cheers!
You didn't bodge a 11speed cassette on a 10 speed freehub? That's what i did with a shimano RS 501 rear wheel. Didn't really test it out of a saddle on a climb yet.
Interesting! I just installed SRAM eTap on a TT bike and the clearance to the wheel is definitely smaller than with RED. Maybe that's the way the derailleur/cage was designed? It didn't quite rub but it was very close, and the disc wheel is just a carbon skin over spokes, so quite fragile. At any rate I wasn't too happy with this and added a 1 mm spacer before installing the cassette. It definitely could be due to wheel flex but what are you going to do about that other than losing a few kilos?
Given that Velomax was bought by Easton years ago, their Shimano cassette bodies can't fit anything more than 9-speed cassettes. If it's a Campagnolo rotor, anything Campy after 1997 can fit anything from 9-speed to 12-speed.
#AskGCNTech, Hi Jon, Can I combine one Oval Chain ring with regular round rings? like oval Big ring and Round small ring and vice versa? Thanks, love the show
#AskGCNTech I have a 2016 Focus Mares AX Tiagra. Unfortunately the carbon fork snapped while braking down a descent. I've been trying to find a replacement for it but it seems to have a rare taper. 1-1/8 to 1-1/4. I have found a few but they cost more than the entire bike is worth. I have found some less expensive ones labeled as mountain bike forks (no suspension), would this work? This other option is to use use expanders or reducers and go with a straight steerer or a more common 1-1/2 taper. Suggestions? Thanks, love the show.
A few days ago I lost the heel of my S-Works road shoe while riding. I did not notice it and walked the last steps home like normal. Of course I scratched the sole of my shoe. Is there any way to polish the sole without damaging the material? #askGCNtech
#askgcntech hi Jon i have the shimano Alfine rear wheel hub gearing system on my boardman urb how do I remove the rear wheel so I can change tubes thanks
Can you use a mtb-derailleur with road shifters? I'm building a gravelbike and I know that it will work with Di2, but does it work with mechanical shifters? Of any brand?
@daAnder71 are you sure? If that is True, then there is no point in the new gravel group from Shimano. Why not just use a XT rear mech with Ultegra shifters?
Hi Jon, love the GCN Tech show. I am from Adelaide. I have a question for you, can I use Shimano Ultegra 8070 hydraulic shifter with SRAM hydraulic rims break and I am using mineral oil fluid?
Wai Seng Luy actually you cant, partly because magura doesn’t accept the servo wave that Shimano uses (as you brake more, the pressure rises exponentially)
#askgcntech hi I'm going through rear wheels, a lot! The bearings to be precise. I'm a heavy chap at over 17 stone but should I be going through wheels at about a 6 month period? I've managed to break 2 frames and more wheels than I care to admit, my current wheels have lasted less than 6 months. I'm riding a specialised diverge and have previously rode specialized secteurs. Current wheels are Avis sport road disks and previously rode Shimano RS11. I'm riding 100+ miles just commuting a week. Please help!
Hi Jon, great content as usual! One question, I have a Dur-ace 9100 crankset, and I would like to send the left crank to factory install a power meter. Can I put the XT 8000 from my MTB so I can still doing indoor training? Crank length is the same, 170mm. Thanks! #askGCNTech
#AskGCNTech I have a road bike 9 speed with Shimano Sora group set. I just bought Campagnolo G3 rims & the hub is not compatible with Shimano cassette. I have to buy a Campagnolo Potenza or Centaur 11 Speed Cassette 11 - 32 (hills). Once I purchase cassette will it work with my Shimano group set? Also will I be able to shift with no issues? I hope you can assist me. Thank you in advance.
#askgcntech my hydraulic rear disc brake does not build up pressure since the first service at my lbs. I've tried basically every bleeding method but I can hear the air flowing. Is there anything I can do or should I just quit and go to my lbs?
What type of brake is it? I'd look at "modes of failure" things here. Maybe the cable has a "droop" if it runs inside the frame, creating an air pocket. Or there's a leak somewhere. I had a small leak on a Shimano road lever, the olive was a bit marred from moving the parts from one bike to another, which let a small amount of oil escape. So check if all your junctions, pistons, seals, etc. are hermetic as well..
#AskGCNTech Hi, I've got a three year old Focus Cayo with a 100x15 front thru-axle. I'd like to get some new wheels but all I can see are 100x12 fronts. If I get a proprietary Focus RAT 100x12 thru-axle wlil I be able to use this with a new wheel on my existing front fork. Thanks, Nick
Gidday Jon, I have a new bike on it's way (giant defy 2019) which comes set up tubeless. How long is that sealant likely to last and does it keep in the bottle? Should I buy some now for back up or wait until I need it?
Hi Harry, sealant lasts for quite a while in the bottle, and you don't need any special tools for tubeless valves. I'd experiment with different pressures, but some tubeless tyres have lower pressure ratings than those with inner tubes.
Hi Harry, I bought a tubeless equipped Giant TCR last summer. It was my first experience with tubeless. I was dismayed to see how high maintenance this system was (on the Giant website), but it's really not so bad. Just different. And if you like doing your own work on the bike - a good thing. The Giant sealant is supposed to be changed every few months. A messy business at best. But worse, the Giant sealant did not work too well for me. I had a pinhole in the tire that just kept opening up. I went out and bought the Finish Line product, changed the sealant and have had no such trouble. So far, punctures are just a few seconds of hissing, then they're gone permanently. As well, Finish Line advises that the sealant will last the life of the tire. Finally I'm told that the product is water soluble - so if you DO have to change or remove it for some reason, like to install a trainer tire for example, it's easier. The Giant product is very "rubbery" and hard to remove. Overall, I am really happy with the system. Velvety smooth ride with great cornering.
Stuart Freedman thanks for the reply, I will look at changing it out fairly quickly. I have the worst luck with flats (not many of them but always at the worst time) so I’m well excited about tubeless
@daAnder71 no one wants your advice on punctuation, stop it. However if a lesson in English is what you are after, may I recommend you remove the to* and be* from your sentence as they are Pleonasms.
Hey Jon, love the show, as always, 2 questions: first, I'm planning to upgrade my bike with an Ultegra 6700 10 speed gearset, but the rear derailleur cage is short, I use a Cyclocross/gravel bike and tend to use a bigger cassette (40/42tt) to tackle every terrain, will the new GRX 10 speed rear derailleur (as seen on your previous vids) will work with it? second, i am using a mechanical actuated (cable pulled) hydraulic brake calipers, but it seems to feel weak and doesn't bite in the rotors that much, other people told me to put the pads in flames to burn the oil embedded to them, any thoughts.? Love to hear from you, cheers from the Philippines.!
@daAnder71 let me explain to you my brakes, I'm using a Juintech R1 calipers they are cable actuated but the insides of the calipers are filled with hydraulic fluid so that the pistons when braking both squeeze in the rotors.
#askgcntech Hi john. I recently destroyed my drivetrain out on a ride (an old sora model, st-3300, flight deck), and was looking to over haul my bike on a budget (an old decathlon sport 7.1) , at around the price of claris or sora. Any Advice? Also, I live in a relatively flat part of the US and was looking to see if I would be a good idea to change it to a single chairing on shimano. Is that possible? Is it a good idea? Any budget? recommendations? Is it possible to upgrade to 9 speed on a 8 speed with a plastic spoke guard?
#AskGCNTech Hi Jon. Great show! Every time I switch my bike from my direct drive trainer (Elite Direto) to my wheel (Mavic Aksium) I need to readjust the rear derailleur indexing. I am using a 10-speed Shimano CS-5700 cassette on both the trainer and the wheel. Is this normal? Could it be that I have the incorrect number/amount of shims on the trainer? Thanks!
I had a similar problem swapping road and off road rear wheels on a bike. It's just hit and miss - taking out or adding spacers to either. Try to get a few spacers in different thicknesses. After a few tries it will work. Remember if the shifting hesitates going to a bigger cog, the cassette needs to move outward. And vica versa.
#AskGCNTech Hi John, love the tech channel and everything I learn here. I've repurposed an old road bike of mine (2009) with shimano tiagra for my sister. My problem is that she's only ten and thus has quite small hands. I've adjusted the leaver reach so she's able to break correctly. However the tilt necessary to shift the front shifter is too big for her to be able to do it whilst riding and she's strugeling to push the leaver hard enough to shift. Can you help me with this? Thanks and cheers! Danilo
W.r.t. mixing SRAM eTap AXS drivetrain components (chainrings, chain, cassette) with other (12-speed) components; I was under the impression that the SRAM eTap AXS Flattop chains have a slightly larger roller diameter, and that SRAM eTap AXS chainrings/cogs has corresponding tooth design to accomodate this larger roller. Hence ALL other drivetrain components are incompatible. Except that Wolf Tooth has some AXS compatible 1x chainrings. Maybe other aftermarket brands also have EXPLICITLY AXS compatible stuff, but Wolf Tooth is the only one I've heard of. #AskGCNTech
I've got question which i hope will give u a headache :D. What is the actual differene between cranksets for 2x10s and 2x11s systems. As far as I know inner width of chain is the same in both systems, the only difference is the width of plates. Up to few days ago I thought the only reason to take 11s crankset over 10s was to have it in matching colour and name with the rest of the groupset, but got confused when shimano launched GRX where the rx600 crankset is available in both 10s and 11s versions. Then started digging and found out that depending on manufacturer the gap between cogs is either the same in both systems, or even wider in 11s (which is, let's say, unintuitive), and then my brain started to burn. So can someone finally answer me for what I am paying 10 euros (in case of rx600) extra? Thanks! #AskGCNTech
I bought a Cube Cross Race Pro Cyclocross Bike for daily use. Occasionally, I ride some tours with friends and I am interested in getting a new pair of road bike wheels for those tours. Any suggestions on what I have to look for and which parameters have to fit? I am quite new to the sport and a bit confused by the range of products. Thanks :) #AskGCNTech
I have the same bike and I recently bought the vision trimax 30 sl disc wheelset. I would suggest to get a wheelset below 1700g for the road. In general, the lighter the better but that depends obviously on your budget. So, the Vision wheels have a good weight (1600g) for their price (~320€). Otherwise make sure you buy wheels with the correct through axle standard (12x100 front and 12x142 rear). Nice bike, enjoy the rides!
The wheel must be a disc specific wheel. That's important. The disc rotor is either mounted with 6 bolts or with one big centerlock on the wheel. Both are fine. If you, like me, want to swap your wheels quickly (one set with road tyres, the other set with gravel tyres) I would suggest to buy another cassette, another pair of disc rotors and tyres. But you can also use the cassette and rotors from your current wheels of you like. Another important detail when you buy a wheelset is the freehub. Make sure it is compatible with Shimano 11 speed cassettes. That's what you have on your bike. So, Shimano 11s freehub, disc specific and through axle standard 12x100 & 12x142. That's the most important.
Flynn, 34-52 will be no problem! the front derailleur is no problem. there will be no drag there. it works now right? The rear mech capacity will be more of a problem, but with the 14-28 it will be no problem. please check my video where I discuss this in detail: ua-cam.com/video/7KVEExIzg7c/v-deo.html
#AskGCNTech Hello guys, i just bought a new Drag Volta bike with Shimano 105 groupset. I rode around 200kms but the bottom bracket started making cracking sound (on the right-side of the BB) on climbs with gradient above 5%. I haven't noticed this sound on level rides. Is this considered normal or should i have take it back to the shop for repairs. Here you can find the bike: dragbicycles.com/bike/volta-te15/ Thanks!
#AskGCNTech Hii Jon (and anyone else willing to chuck 2¢), im looking at building a cheap af Chinese hyper bike (yes i know just how terrible of an idea it sounds like, but trying to make the whole situation as bleek as possible for the most honest advice). Anyway I currently use a Balk track bike as my daily driver (aluminum 7.87kg fixed gear) and would love to upgrade bikes, but saving and cash is a slow pursuit so thinking about giving the cheapest of the cheap a chance. Im looking at building a full carbon super aero hyperbike(roughly about 5kg depending on how wrong each weight description is) for roughly €1000 and have a list of each actual part saved in aliexpress. Is this something you would be interested in advising with or maybe if a second hand/ more reputable brand option is even possible, can add all the extra details if you're interested. Thanks again Jon From maastricht
The important part of the entire shimano setup is that the chain is assymetrical. Match the chain and you will be fine. Campagnolo (5.15mm) chains ARE NOT the same as SRAM (5.25mm) as well as SHIMANO being shaped for the new ramping system.
We love to help here at GCN Tech so if you've got a question you'd like us to answer leave it in the comments below using #AskGCNTech
We need an episode featuring your whole herd of bikes, Jon. :)
What a service Jon provides for us here, sharing his experience and know how, with such passion and enthusiasm! Thanks JC!
For the Di2 bar end junction question, I do it a bit differently than suggested here. It's similar in concept to how you end the wrap near the stem, just with the pointy bit of the bar tape starting, instead of ending, the effort.
Even better: use double sided tape. See this bike build for good instructions: ua-cam.com/video/0vCrwITeYxo/v-deo.html
I'm using 52t and 34t chainrings with no problem shifting. The derailleur is a basic Shimano cable operated.
I don’t even own a bike but I keep watching this channel religiously
same %)
I love it!
Hi Jon, thanks for answering my question, very much appreciated. 42 tooth chainring ordered.
Regarding 52x34... I’ve been running the setup for over 18 months now and haven’t missed a single shift between chainrings. The easier gear for climbing the likes of Gibralter rd in SB Ca calls for the 34x28, but the descent needed something bigger. Made the switch from 36 to a 34 and I’ll never go back
Particularly well delivered episode.
A little tip for getting closer to the 7m rollout, use 50-34 chainrings with a 14-28 cassette (one gear locked out for 11 speed) which I believe is a 15 tooth and a 23mm tyre on the rear and it will be 6.99 m
I run Sram Red 22 Rims on 11 speed Campagnolo Super Record cassette. Works just fine!
Bowden cable from your local model shop can be bought by the metre and works a treat for routing internal cables!
I have a Mercian with 10 speed DT shifters, and man its a trip going back and forth between that and Rival 1.
Always love the weekly clinic - crab free once again!
Friction is fine on a ten speed cassette. The cogs are relatively close together so the chain always drops into something that works well
Hi Jon, I think it would have been helpful to explain derailleur capacity in terms of changing the gearing.
I use Campagnolo record shifter, derailleur, rotor Q rings 52/36 and SRAM red 11/28 11 speed works perfectly.
@Glenn if it's really that flat go for 1x or singlespeed
#AskGCNTech Just built up Di2 setup (best way to wrap bar tape for junction box is to cut the start tape edge diagonally similar to how you finish the ends with the cut edge flush with the special plug. Looks great)
My question is with synchro shift typically the front derailleur shifts before the rear compensates. This can cause a momentary high cadence (ratio too high) when climbing hills. I know I can change the shift points but is there a way to get the rear derailleur to change before the front changes or ideally rear change -front change-final rear change?
Thanks - Shawn in Ottawa Canada
For the last question: why not get bigger rings overall? 53/39?
That's what I have, with a 13-25 ten speed cassette. Lowest gearing I've had since I started cycling back in 1981.
Why not just go 1-by and dispense with that extra weight and aero drag?
(50-27 is pretty much the same as 34-18, so his "low" end is covered)
#AskGCNTech Hi John, I am using a budget-priced MicroShift 7 speed rear derailleur on my old, but fixed up, 26" mountain bike. The rear derailleur typically shifts flawlessly up and down the cogs, but when I go over bumps or perform a bunny hop, the indexing is disrupted. I usually have to turn the barrel adjuster in order to get it back in order. I've heard of ghost shifting over bumps, but this doesn't seem to be the case here, it just seems to go in between gears.
Thanks for more bike wisdom!
Glenn - why not get a 53/39 chainring set if you are riding mostly flats?
I’m 52 and use mine unless I’m riding big climbs ( I live in Vermont USA).
NEW SHOW/SEGMENT IDEA: do a wheel 2 wheel look at a bike from years gone by. E.g. the old GTs with the triangle by the seat post, a bike with the original SRAM road groupset etc
Poor Glenn! Living in SW Australia. I live in Scotland and the hills are the best part!
Disc brakes rubbing: is there any play in your wheel bearing?
Do your bar end plugs stay in?
On a single speed, how bad can the chain line be before we get into serious problems?
Help please! My rear wheel appears to have excessive play in it, ie when in place it can easily be shoogled from side to side. The qr skewers are tight and cassette is on securely. What else could be causing this? Are bearings done? Thanks
bring back the gcn presenter challenge!! who can fix a flat the fastest???
Any ideas? #AskGCNTech

im am about to buy my first road bike (i think im converting from mtb) and the shop i work in has a bike for sail which i can get for cheap, the only thing is there is a small amount of rust on the frame, what can i do about this?
the rust is only surface (the rust is in a area which does not have much room to work on it as it is between the chain stays) and does not seem to be too deep, i also want to try to keep the paint as its a limited edition paint job
thanks for the help!
Thanks, Denis
can i use shimano 105 r5800 shifters to work with shimano sora r3000 groupset?
Hi Jon, I am running Ultegra 11 spd mechanical on my Giant roadbike. When I am in the large chainring and any of the 3 smallest cogs, the front derailleur rubs very slightly. I can silence it by holding the brake lever inward, but obviously this is not practical. My question: should I tighten up on the barrel adjuster, or dial out the derailleur? Or both?
By holding the brake lever inward, you are basically doing the same the barrel adjuster would do. So try it out. If it doesn't work, then try the limit screws.
@@chrisko6439 Thanks man! I'll try that tonight.
#AskGCNTech Hi Jon, I got a Canyon Aeroad (full carbon). How should I fasten it to my Park Tools PCS 10.4 repair stand, so that I avoid damaging it?
ahoy there what would u say is wrong if my crank feels scratchy like it’s slipping or rubbing only when i pedal really hard, is it because i tilt the bike too much either side when i’m trying to get up to speed faster do u think that like focuses the friction inside it and wears it out? any ideas? cheers man!
Hi GCN,
Thanks for the cool Channel you have.
@@chrisko6439 Pretty sure the hub is for 10 and 11 speed.
@@tychoMX Thanks! Maybe I should consider a spacer. :)
Hi mate
Can you advise me what cassette fit into velomax hubs please.
Thanks
Given that Velomax was bought by Easton years ago, their Shimano cassette bodies can't fit anything more than 9-speed cassettes. If it's a Campagnolo rotor, anything Campy after 1997 can fit anything from 9-speed to 12-speed.
#AskGCNTech, Hi Jon, Can I combine one Oval Chain ring with regular round rings? like oval Big ring and Round small ring and vice versa? Thanks, love the show
Yes you can but the shifting is worse than the terrible shifting of oval chainrings
#askGCNtech
Why is my R8000 11-32 cassette so loud on a full R8000 groupset compared to a 11-29 Chorus cassette on the same chain and R8000 groupset?
Adjust the B-tension screw? Is it a SS or GS R8000 derailleur? The SS is only rated to max 30T capacity.
It could be that the chain and 11-29 cassette are old and the 11-32 is new, so they don't work well together. But it's probably what cup and cone said

Wai Seng Luy no you can’t. If you’ve got a cantilever fork/frame, I think you are able to use the magura hydraulic rim brakes but not sure about that
Wai Seng Luy actually you cant, partly because magura doesn’t accept the servo wave that Shimano uses (as you brake more, the pressure rises exponentially)

#AskGCNTech Ello Jon! My rollout is 7m but I’m thinking of getting Sram Force Etap AXS, will the rear derailleur break if I try to lock it out?
#askgcntech my hydraulic rear disc brake does not build up pressure since the first service at my lbs. I've tried basically every bleeding method but I can hear the air flowing. Is there anything I can do or should I just quit and go to my lbs?
What type of brake is it?
I'd look at "modes of failure" things here. Maybe the cable has a "droop" if it runs inside the frame, creating an air pocket. Or there's a leak somewhere. I had a small leak on a Shimano road lever, the olive was a bit marred from moving the parts from one bike to another, which let a small amount of oil escape. So check if all your junctions, pistons, seals, etc. are hermetic as well..

yes... John is using GRX 10sp with Tiagra shifters of his Garbage to Gravel build
Yup
Campy 12s casette doesn't work well with the AXS groupset, so I suppose that in the opposite way it wont work either...
Gidday Jon, I have a new bike on it's way (giant defy 2019) which comes set up tubeless. How long is that sealant likely to last and does it keep in the bottle? Should I buy some now for back up or wait until I need it?
Also do you need special tools like a valve stem remover, and spare valves?
And what pressure sure they be, 110kg rider

Hi john.

Thanks! #AskGCNTech
Pretty please with sugar on top - stop saying "Biancheee". Please go "Bianki". And Celeste is beautiful :-)
And BTW - Jon Cannings is the potential new Calvin. Awesome work!!!
Thanks :)

@@highbag thanks :) is any wheel compatible with the disc brake? And can i Just take the same cassette or do I have to get a new one?
Thanks again Jon

Can a Shimano 12 speed MTB cassette be used with the SRAM AXS chain/groupset? #AskGCNTech
Probably yes. As sram tends to be interchangeable between different sports..
The important part of the entire shimano setup is that the chain is assymetrical. Match the chain and you will be fine. Campagnolo (5.15mm) chains ARE NOT the same as SRAM (5.25mm) as well as SHIMANO being shaped for the new ramping system.
First!!!
