The fringe is the bridge between the Goons and Python. Of Course, Fringe's humor was obviously very class based. It was subversive towards the Brit class system. In that sense, Python was more like the Goons. They were sillier and less topical. Of course, I'm just an American and that is an outsider's take on this.
Both Eric Idle and John Cleese state that "Beyond the Fringe" was inspirational in forming their comedy style.

One can clearly see how Stephen Fry, Atkinson, Laurie and so many other comedians got inspired.
