There’s an invisible 6th PTX member - Ben Bram, who is co-founder/arranger/producer. He does the basic arrangement, often working with Kevin & Scott. Then they bring the arrangement to the group as a whole & they circle jam to work out the final product. They have two Grammies in the “best arrangement, instrumental or a capella” category, and all 6 names are on the awards. (Those songs are Daft Punk, 2015 & Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, 2016.)
michmirich - According to their documentary, Ben Bram was the one who connected Avi & Scott, also found Kevin on UA-cam & reached out to him. I think that counts as co-founder - he worked with Scott to put the group together.
According to everywhere else, even Scott's own mouth, he was the one who found both. They didn't even know Ben Folds when PTX was formed, how would that be even possible.
Kudos to you for pointing that out. This particular vocal coach seems to relish putting her down with comparisons to Mitch. Mitch has a freakish voice but his high notes are not the same as Kirstie's. They are different and complementary. One is not better than the other.
@@foghorn90leghorn73 I don't know if you have watched any of Tara's other PTX reactions, but I'm almost positive there are some others where she does compliment Kirstie. She, like the rest of us, can get wrapped up in the majesty that is Mitch's voice.
@@foghorn90leghorn73 not really, she's just complimenting mitch's voice; after all, he's a guy. She compliments on Kirstie on some of her other videos like the evolution of rihanna. It's just that in this particular video, mitch's voice is doing the higher notes more, so she's pointing him out more as well.
To be perfectly fair, I feel like Kirstin is quite possibly the one who's improved the most since the Sing-Off. Not knocking her at all, she's actually my favorite member, but during the earlier years she could sometimes feel kind of overpowered by the sheer talent of most of the other members. Since performing in Kinky Boots I feel like she's really come into her own; it seems like she's more confident and can more reliably use her full vocal capabilities, which are beautiful.
One of the 'silent' things that Pentatonix does is that aside from being masters at their 'role' in the group, each member is adept at picking up on the other parts when they need to. You pointed out one, when Kirsten takes over a lower melody so Mitch can hit a high note. Another is that Scott actually sings bass whenever Matt/Kevin are busy doing beats or melody! Check out Scott's (not the full group, just scotthoying ) cover of I Should Tell Ya Momma On You. He shows off that while he usually sings runs and does the melody for PTX, he's more than capable (see: really good!) at other skills too.
I love how Scott has always had a habit of mouthing lyrics when other members are singing and also when he smiles at something awesome or unexpected that Mitch does. I think they challenge each other and that's an excellent relationship cuz it'll make them better singers! =)
Yeah you can tell the entire video there's this silent communication between Mitch, Scott, and Kirstin, they turn and smile at each other, like "good job gurl". They love each other and what they do so much, and it really shows
If you really want to have Mitch totally disgust you, react to Superfruit's 'Defying Gravity' cover. It is insane. PS The blonde wig from the Frozen medley makes another appearance.
Oh my gosh now I NEED a video of you just talking about Mitch singing for an hour. He is the most talented vocalist I’ve ever heard, so I love when you break apart all the insane things he can do that I never even realized he was doing.
The arrangements are usually Ben Bram, Scott and Kevin combined, for the most part, I believe, although they've all pitched in with specific songs they've championed. As for Kirstin's sweet spot being low? That's always been the case. Her best work is usually in her low end.
I absolutely LOVE Kirstin's lower register, although especially since singing in Kinky Boots her higher end has also been noticeably more solid, and she just has an overall beautiful voice.
I don't think you heard "We need a little Christmas" she hits the high C6 in Seasons of Love. The highest note on any Pentatonix album. The whole album is excellent but Kirstin is singing in her beautiful high register.
My other favorite where he shines, in PTX anyway, is the Popspring live version of "Can't Sleep Love" - just like the Aha! Performance you mentioned, he's got his attitude on and in great voice!
It's a real treat to hear Kirstie use the lower register here. She has a really rich , smooth contralto lower range - I first really heard it in her solo in "Where are you Christmas?" and she uses it so sparingly that it's a wonderful vocal surprise, much like hearing Kevin vocalize. Someone had mentioned the Mitch has a higher upper range than Ariana and, no disrespect to AG, but I can believe it..Thanks, Tara!
My favorite part about this mashup is how *exposed* the main vocals wind up throughout the whole thing. PTX has always been a powerful ensemble, but allowing one person to sit out, almost completely unsupported, and still slay it, is so impressive. I'm echoing requests for you taking a look at Citizen Queen.
It would be great if you could to react to Citizen Queen's evolution of girl bands. Scott Hoying help organise the arrangement and they are actually touring with Pentatonix too!
it's funny how you mentioned adding mash ups to a setlist because Pentatonix has a few on their setlist for this tour they're on now! they have a section that's basically like an "evolution of Pentatonix" where they sing a few bits of Sing-Off arrangements, a mashup of a few songs from their early EPs, and a bit of the Evolution of Music! i'm seeing them in Columbus, Ohio this June and in St. Louis in August which will be my 8th and 9th shows, I hope you're able to see them! Also - you should definitely check out Citizen Queen (Scott helped put them together and they're one of the opening acts on PTX's tour!)
The thing with Kirstie and Mitch is that they both are excellent in either high or low, but there's a certain quality about Mitch's higher register and Kirstie's lower register that is just... I don't have the words, but they're seriously impressive.
I loved watching your face during each transition lol they are truly unmatched when I comes to mashups and medleys! I'm going two shows this tour and I can't wait to hear this live! Thanks for reacting ❤
I really wish Kirstie had done the whistles in Imagine even if they just added them to the end with all the different songs. We all know she easily can cause she has a ton of ease in the whistle register and it’d be great to hear her use it in a real song. I know Mitch can do them too but he does them in a different way that isn’t really a whistle. They sound good but Kirstie beats him with whistles. That would have made the mashup absolutely perfect imo.
Pentatonix puts their mashups together. They work very hard, and they have always dine their own arrangements. Even on The Sing-Off they arranged and choreographed every performance by themselves, even though help was available. The techncal issues for recording and what mic for who has always been Ben Bram. They played The Forum the ither night, on Kristin's 27th birthday! And, get this... They're going to be playing Madison Square Garden!! ❤️ WOOT!
I need to hear your reaction to Avi Kaplan’s Change on the rise and pentatonix version of come along. Please and thank you! Love your reaction to pentatonix. They are my fave band!!
I saw them in Oakland, on their first show on their World Tour, on May 11th, and it's hands down the best concert I've ever been to. Their voices are incredible and it's such a memorable show. I would definitely recommend going if you can!
Do you know why Tara is the best vocal coach reactor on UA-cam? Because she makes her videos very entertaining even though the video itself is already entertaining. Love you Tara! And thank you for always reacting Pentatonix. I mean since 2012 i am their fan so it's a big deal for me. I love them forever! xoxo
There’s something magic about playing together, especially singing harmonies..unbelievably i have never heard these guys before .... you're right mashups give people something that deeply excites the brain in a highly condensed form, which keeps em listening ..... holy cow is right x

I feel like I've learned so much by watching you! I know about the voice from an actor's perspective, so it's so interesting to hear the techniques behind singing!
"Unicorns dancing, marshmallows falling from the sky".....fell out of my chair, my husband thought I'd lost it! You're right about Kevin's facial expressions, too. So many beatboxers are a little weird to watch perform, but Kevin is just so expressive and always looks like he's really into the music he's making ;-)
Going to see them end of June in North Dakota, coming down from Canada- and I am absolutely shaking with excitement.....Mitch is scary insanely, flawless in this- it's sickening to me that he keeps getting BETTER. the arrangement for this mashup is absolutely masterful, agreed.
Explaining how to do runs you straight up sounded like a drum teacher I love it! It's all about breaking it down slow and perfecting it before you go fast :)
I’ve been watching you for a few weeks you are an amazing voice coach and a beautiful person looking forward to more of your videosDo you explaining things so simply great job
Hey there Tara, I love watching reaction videos, especially when they are for the fab five super group Pentatonix! And it just occurred to me that a main reason I enjoy your clips is very similar to the feeling I have after watching Sister Wendy Beckett review a work of art. I feel better informed. It's a sign of a great teacher to not get in the way of topic at hand, but to also know just when to either repeat an important idea, or to stop the presentation and point out for added emphasis (or to clearly demonstrate a trick or technical aspect employed by the artist) which is something I would not have noticed, and once revealed cannot be forgotten because it gives me a deeper appreciation for the work of art. And it's that gift of educating, instructing, and demonstrating that by itself is inspiring, engaging, and informing so many viewers like myself --who at this very moment might have felt the need to reach out somehow & convey my very sincere gratitude to you in a long message that hopefully will make some sense. If not, then I hope it will have at least brought you a smile! Thank you again for sharing your reactions and insights on UA-cam. Best Regards, -Lyle ✌️
Can you please react to Pentatonix doing a cover of rather be and/or cheerleader? They're my favourite covers by them. Also love the vids I always look forward to them thanks for the smiles.
I will not be seeing them on tour this year sadly. I've moved and they aren't coming anywhere near me this year. But I HAVE seen them in concert twice, once when they were just starting to do tours and the other was last year. It is absolutely worth your money and your time.
If you haven't already, I would love to hear your thoughts of Citizen Queen. They are an all-female a capella group that Scott and Ben Bram put together. They are also opening for Pentatonix on their tour. - I saw them on Thursday and I almost cried at how beautiful they sounded. Amazing first concert❤
You should really react to their song called "Come Along". It is my personal favourite song but I think Kirsten uses some singing techniques that are really impressive.
🙂Scott, Kevin and arranger Ben Bram are the primary arrangers.. Scott and Kirstie always kill it with the harmonies..I know mitch gets a lot of attention but I love the harmonies behind his vocals..Matt and Kevin slayed those beats though 🤩
Tara loved your reaction, but please react to Pentatonix - Come Along the feeling that has is immense and everything that you did not know that you needed. xoxo
Thanks for including the tip on doing runs. I'm auditioning for the Tenor soli in a performance of Handel's "Messiah" and always have trouble with "Every Valley."

You should really react to their song called "Come Along". It is my personal favourite song but I think Kirsten uses some singing techniques that are really impressive.
Thank you again for a great review!
🙂Scott, Kevin and arranger Ben Bram are the primary arrangers.. Scott and Kirstie always kill it with the harmonies..I know mitch gets a lot of attention but I love the harmonies behind his vocals..Matt and Kevin slayed those beats though 🤩
Tara loved your reaction, but please react to Pentatonix - Come Along the feeling that has is immense and everything that you did not know that you needed.
xoxo
Their ability to perfectly switch up their tempos, keys and octaves blows my mind in these mashups
React to come along by pentatonix and IM GOING TO ONE OF THERE SHOW'S 😭❤️😭❤️😭❤️
Love your advice!!! Love you
You should check out Citizen Queen. They were started by Scott and is touring with PTX!
Thanks for including the tip on doing runs. I'm auditioning for the Tenor soli in a performance of Handel's "Messiah" and always have trouble with "Every Valley."
OMG...love your reactions.
So, what I'm getting from the "mashup v. medley explanation:
Mashup --> Pentatonix
Medley --> Voctave
