TLDR: Substack and Medium are different platforms with their own pros and cons for writers, and the best choice depends on the writer's goals and existing audience. 00:00 📝 Substack and Medium are different platforms and should not be compared, as each has its own pros and cons for writers. 01:12 💡 Medium is a platform where writers can earn money through a partner program based on reader subscriptions, making it potentially profitable for writers with a large audience. 02:41 📧 Substack is better for capturing email addresses and sending emails, while Medium is more focused on social publishing, but it's still beneficial to start an email list on Medium. 04:03 💡 Substack offers a simple way for writers to monetize their newsletters, providing exclusive and engaging content for a monthly fee. 05:16 📝 Medium allows writers to attract a large audience without a social media presence, while Substack requires an existing audience for a paid newsletter to be successful. 07:09 📝 Substack is not the right choice for making money as a writer unless you already have a following, so if you're starting out with no followers, Medium may be a better option. 08:21 📈 Building a loyal audience is crucial for successfully monetizing a Substack newsletter, as internal rankings are not a reliable indicator of subscriber interest. 09:36 📝 Medium is best for new writers to monetize and build an audience, while Substack is good for a paid newsletter once you have a following.
Thank you for this video. Earned a subscriber. I have been trying to decide where to start in relauchiing my writing career. Thank you for your insights and knowledge.
This was an especially helpful video. Thank you for taking the time to explain the differences between the Substack and Medium platforms. I hadn’t seen Medium in this light previously and learned much needed information from you. I started a Medium account this morning as well. Thanks again for the helpful content. 😊
Thanks for the video. I'm getting some audience on Medium for now. If I wanna create a Substack newsletter but don't wanna use a subscription model, then what are the other ways of monetizing it? For example, can I put ads in my substack newsletter?
@Sepehr Vafaei, I don’t know if Substack will allow you to place ads or not. I read about a Substack author the other day, who has kept her newsletter free, on purpose. She has managed to build her business without charging a fee for what she writes on Substack. Even though her newsletter remains free, I believe she said she’s got close to 200 active supporters (maybe there’s a tip feature? I don’t recall the specifics).
So Medium works by monetizing single articles? Is it mandatory for these articles to be paywall blocked? Does the Read monetization method apply to free articles you write?

Hi there! Yes, each article earns individually and yes, the article has to be paywalled to be monetised - that's the whole point of Medium's subscription: Readers pay a monthly fee to get access to paywalled articles.
Thanks. I have had a Medium profile since 2018, and have 28 articles posted and have a total number of reads of 10,142 at last count. Alas in the Global South (I live in South Africa) Medium doesn't have facility for us to join the partner program. We can contribute articles but get nothing for doing so. That is discriminatory. Does Substack act affirmatively to help the Global South to at least get some value from the contributions we make? Medium doesn't, but it is nice crisp platform. UA-cam does, but the only way I have made some money from that has been to generate content on highly controversial and sensational issues. But I am not really writing for the crowd, and am frankly suspicious of crowd mentality. I am writing for the next generation hoping that my life experiences may spare them some suffering. Maybe the canon of my writing and films will help give the Vatican evidence to canonise me in the future, but I have no ambitions for sainthood and I will be dead when the benefits flow, but that will be cold comfort to my wife and children. What is your advice? 😉
I rarely give compliments, but your explanation was excellent. I especially liked all the context you managed to include. Too bad I'm not a writer so I can't follow your Medium advice ;-)

Hi Peter! :) Thank you so much for the lovely feedback, I'm so glad the video was useful! :)
Thanks for sharing. I’m still actually deciding and it’s been months. What would you advise if you already have an email list. I use mailer lite currently. Is the main aim of sub stack to earn?
“…there’s no point in trying to compare which one is better than the other.” Ok, thank you for point that out right away…so why in the sweet frig did you make a 12 minute ‘Medium vs Substack’ video then? Maybe the answer is after the mid-video ad?

There's a difference between saying "A is better than B" and finding out which one is the best choice for YOU individually (which the video helps you do). There's not even a mid-video ad, but thanks for your thoughtful comment and all the best :)
Hi, would you be so kind as to tell me what going to happen if I publish at the same time the same article on Medium and Substack? Is it possible that maybe someone will delete my account or something?
What if I don't ask for money on Substack while I don't have the audience and switch to the paid model later? Isn't the substack better in that sense since you also capture email addresses?

It still depends on the exact strategy you follow and whether you manage to get discovered on Substack. I reach millions of readers on Medium each year AND get paid AND have built a newsletter with over 35k subscribers through my writing on Medium.
Good to know. Now, why did you also get thumbs-down?...I know: there are detractors for anybody on UA-cam, no matter how good is a clip or the author. Only thumbs-up to you, from me, including claps on Medium, and tweets.
I think that's because Stripe doesn't operate on Pakistan. And Medium uses Stripe for payouts (I discovered this while making a video about how to make money on Medium)

What makes medium much more enticing is its simple UI and access to millions of readers.
Totally agree! :)

Wow, thank you! This video is 2 years ago, it is still like this now?
I appreciate this video! I am getting more guidance on what I need to do!
THIS is what I needed to know. So I’ll focus on Medium first. Thank you!
This was great how you explained the difference between the two and how to achieve success. great job.
Hi Craig! :) I'm glad this was helpful, thanks for your feedback! :)
But both Medium and Substack use Stripe, which isn't available in all countries. :/
This is exactly what I needed! Thank you!
Hi Gena! :) So glad this was helpful!
I understand. You can't compare these 2 plattforms. It's like comparing apples with cheese. Thanks a lot for teaching me this!
Thanks. I really need this info right now. I've been on Kindle Vella for a couple of years, but need a new, and better platform.
Very informative video, thanks! You just saved me a bunch of time.
I wish I knew this before joining Substack. Been writing on there and nobody cares. It sux
This was super helpful as I am contemplating which platform to start with... Thank you!!
Thanks for the video.

Does medium has sandbox? How come suddenly zero traffic on new post? should we delete old post and write again?

This is my question too. Is substack inclusive or does have restrictions like Medium
Did you get your subscribers on substack by putting a link on your Medium articles? Is this how you build? Thank you!
Thank you for explaining this! Great advice 🙏

How harshly do the judge wrong-thinking creators? Would either platform ban Alex Jones Info Wars?
haha, alex jones is banned everywhere, i mean everywhere... bcos truth hurts

Why Medium's MPP is not applicable for Pakistani Writers?
I think that's because Stripe doesn't operate on Pakistan. And Medium uses Stripe for payouts (I discovered this while making a video about how to make money on Medium)
