if you sew the cover on the pillow permanently by sealing in the buttons, how would you clean this pillow? Would it not be best to make button holes so the cover is at least hand washable in the case of spills and such?
Hi, thanks for your feedback. Yes, you're right, button holes would make it much easier to remove for washing... and if you are happy to work the buttonholes into the band then feel free! The original pattern has sewn on buttons because it is designed for the totally beginner knitter who wants a VERY straightforward knit, with no complicated bits. But it would be quite straightforward to put three buttonholes in the final 2x2 rib band. Just work half of the measured band, then at 3 equal spaces along the band cast off a couple of stitches as you knit across, then cast them on again as you work back along, staying in 2x2 rib as you go. Then make sure the buttonhole band lies underneath the plain rib band (with right side in) when sewing up. Make sure the buttonholes are not too big for your buttons to avoid stretched or gaping buttonholes. Happy Knitting! Cal x
