This video shows the police officer to be 100 percent in the right for this shooting, and is a shining example of 1. why we need body cams, 2. why police are so quick to shoot and 3. how quickly things can go south when deadly force is involved.
Robert Havens He could have just shot him in the arms and legs. Would have achieved the same thing but the man would still be alive. Also, why fire 5 times?! Surely there was no need for that, was there?
Robert Havens There is no such things as good police officers when the laws are evil. Fuck the states laws. Fuck the cops and fuck anyone that supports either. this is what happens when you mix the bullshit 3 strikes law with bullshit gun licensing laws. We have the right to bare arms. We shouldn't need a fucking card from the government. Every time gun sells go up, shootings go down. Anyway, The man was fighting for his life. He had a weapon to defend himself living on the streets. he tried to run but the officer got really close. Knowing he will go to jail for the rest of his life for a fucking gun charge if he couldn't get away he fought. He died because of the bullshit law. Real victim is us and the people. Why did he have strikes?. Probably the bullshit drug war. our prisons are overpacked 80% of victimless drug charges.
Frieda You really haven't got a clue have you. It would have been physically impossible for the officer to have done as you have suggested, had he tried he would now be a dead officer. Also shooting someone in the arms or legs is actually against the law, it would be considered torture. Officers are authorised to use deadly force to prevent loss of life, their own, or others, they ARE NOT permitted to take pot shots at limbs in the hope of somehow disarming the subject. Either their life is in danger or it isn't. If it is then they are trained to keep shooting until the threat stops, that's why the officer fired five shots. If their life or the life of another isn't in danger then discharging their weapon would be at best attempted murder. And if you had any actual experience of firearms you would know that they are not very accurate weapons, it's not like the movies, the bad guys don't move in slow motion!. Centre mass......centre mass.....centre mass.
Body cameras would do so much to make the public realize there are lots of good cops. Every officer should be required to have body cams. This officer and his department are fortunate to have them.
+kdw75 Tell your congressman. President Obama suggested a law that all departments should be required to have them, but our house & senate tend not to pass anything he would like to pass.
catothewiser Well I wanted to clarify what you meant by invasion of privacy. First and foremost; you have no right to privacy when in public. Following up on that, if an officer shows up at your house, you forfeit that right if you invite him or her in, and it is also forfeit if they are there on a search warrant. As far as a cops right to privacy goes, they are a government employee when on duty. Think of a body camera as being merely a police supervisor that follows them around for 10 hours a day. They get to take it off at the end of their shift.
catothewiser No, because the law says so. Anything you do outside is public. Hence laws like drunk in public, public nudity, public urination, noise violations, etc. You don't own the outside world, so you have no right to privacy when you're not in your home or place of business. That's why the plain view doctrine exists too. If a cop sees you committing a crime, he has the right to stop you. That's why murders in the privacy of a home go undetected longer than ones done out in broad daylight where people are going to stumble upon a dead body pretty quickly. Where do I get the forfeiture of the right to privacy when served with a warrant? I get it from the U.S. constitution. The 4th amendment covers illegal search and seizure, but a search warrant legitimizes search and seizure of a home or place of business when signed by a judge. Thereby, you have no privacy rights when a warrant it served against you. Yes, I can tell you're not really concerned with rights of police. You'd prefer to victimize everyone else instead because everyone's just an innocent fall guy who gets set up by the big bad government.
catothewiser Because that's not how they chose to word it. Ask yourself, what constitutes a violation of privacy? Somebody seeing something you don't want them to see. The way the police can see something you may not want them to see is by searching your property or your person with permission, a warrant, or laws like the plain view doctrine being used against crimes you commit in public. These aren't exactly new concepts.
Sad to say, but thank goodness he had a camera on..he'd have been taken through the cleaners if not. I'm very sorry he was forced with taking another's life. As one mentioned before, this is just a "suspecious incident" which the normal person wouldn't see as a dangerous call. But to a cop, every call could be your last. I'm also thankful to see he used good tactics. Bravo brother and thank god your safe! Good guys win this time.
Are you freaking serious?????? I am talking to the administration ------ this officer was involved in a shooting and you treat him like that? He did a courageous thing and you talk to him like a POS. I have ten years of experience as a LEO...... I was also an AF Combat Controller. The Officers over me NEVER spoke to me like that. If you EVER spoke to me like that and treated me like that I would sue your ass off. You left him alone in a car after such a life changing experience. He needed someone there. I go to therapy because of people like you. The Officer did a PERFECT job.
People really don't realize what cops deal with. I mean. This video starts with a guy at work talking to a sweet old lady, and less than two minutes later he's killed a guy on the set of true detective.
I'm sure the officer feels bad about shooting the guy for what ever reason this man pulled that gun, but also the officer has to wonder if that man had a round in the chamber he could easily killed him by ambush.
patrick evans I don't feel bad for the criminal he made his choice and paid for it. The officer was lucky that the man didn't have a round in the chamber.
***** Did you watch the video the officer yells several times he is the police and he yells at the guy to drop the gun. That guy is nothing but a waste of air anyway. .
***** Your fucking blind. It shows he had a gun in the video. A gun was found with his prints on it. He was banned from having one due to being a criminal. Bother to do some reading. He was a known criminal and violated his claims he was going to clean up. He clearly showed he was going to fire at the police officer.
WTF...Why does the cop keep saying son of a bitch, cause he realizes he didn’t have to shoot the guy who wasn’t even a threat just because he got back up while his hands were up in the air saying, “oh my god??!”
Thank God we have Policemen and Policewomen to keep our changing nation civil. I feel it for this Officer - he most likely was reluctant to shoot a fellow human being, however, he had no choice in this circumstance. For you race baiters - this is a professional Gentleman doing his job for us - the US citizens. There was no animus, just a professional reaction to the issue at hand. I salute you and your service to us.
Cute Little Suzie The, ahem, news folks will put a different spin on things. Institutional racism, poor, trespassing while black - you name it. They certainly will miss the event of the moment. The LE could have been killed while enforcing "our" laws as the 'poor sensitive' trespasser drew a bead on him.
the second half of this video is the best, you get a fantastic view of the situation and the after events from the officers perspective, and it's not pleasant, no high fives or pats on the back here....
I'm glad the officer didn't lose his job. This still is incredibly sad, both for the officer and the suspect's family. This officer has to live with this, even though it's not his fault. I wish I could thank him for being willing to take that burden upon himself.
I'm glad that there is a bodycam to confirm that this officer's actions were necessary. I'm also sorry that the officer's life was threatened. I'm also vaguely sorry that, that squater guy is dead. But you know, self defense, and all that. Praise be to body-cams. Also, good on the other officers for quickly establishing the series of events surrounding the shooting. Terrible situation. But good police work.
Although it's always tragic that a life was lost, this officer performed very well. Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. As well as with the family of the deceased.
This officer just survived the absolute WORST situation that a cop can face!!! I can't help but bring up an observation that really pisses me off. Every cop that showed up at that shooting was rude and inconsiderate to the officer that shot the ARMED!!! CLEARLY ARMED!!!! Suspect. Not ONE COP asked if he was ok or or even seemed to give a shit about him!!! Just an observation but I think that really SUCKS!!!!! To the officer that was forced to PROTECT HIMSELF, Great job surviving even though I'm sure you wished things had gone a different way! This was not your fault sir!! He chose his fate and you chose to LIVE. BE SAFE OUT THERE!! Good job!!! I'm really sorry you had to go through that.
The officer did exactly as he should in my view. The suspect did not reveal himself when the officer announced his presence. Suspect stayed hidden and when spotted with a gun the officer issued commands which suspect acted as though he were going to comply but officer stayed vocal and alert. The officer fired after the third command was not complied with while the suspect still had a weapon. When the officer fired he backed out then came back in and saw he had to fire again. In the aftermath, when asked, the officer recalled he discharged 5 rounds and he was correct. Suspect had opportunity to surrender 4 times but chose not to and paid the price. Very competent police officer, one that many officers in this country can learn from.
I feel bad for the cop.. he had goose bumps the whole time. nobody wants to be shot at or have to kill someone in the line of duty. He should have just stayed down...
IKR ... the cop said the trespasser had a gun and wss cycling it as if he was going to shoot the cop but it didn’t look like the guy was going to shoot the cop. It looked like he was trying to get away from the cop. Maybe he got scared and didnt want to be shot at
well done! Did not shoot right away, and the officer is LUCKY this POS's gun did not fire as soon as he pulled it. You can see his gun at 1:58. The officer only shot until the threat was gone, he did not "empty the mag" into that guy as he could have on adrenaline. Glad the officer is safe, the POS is gone from the streets
The video clearly shows the officer defending himself against an unknown threat. But once the threat is neutralised the least the officer should have done was to give the man first aid and give him a chance to live.
Yeah he really shouldn't give him first aids, what could he do against 5-6 gunshots? Put a towel around his torso. Maybe the victim still has a knife, so why would the police officer risk his life for someone that clearly wanted to kill him?
Cops get put in such fucked up situations. While your adrenalin is pumping a million miles an hour, you some how have to remember everything that is happening for your report too. I worked as a bouncer, not so much remembering, just pushing and once and a blue moon fighting, but not much paperwork because they're all drunks.
justified. he jump after the cop told him to get to the ground. he jump back up for something. i would of fired shots as well. he might have grabbed a knife or who knows what.
Any cop that discharges his or her weapon in the line of duty should be suspended immediately without pay pending an external investigation by a government bdy that is not affiliated with law enforcement.
By the time he fired the last shot he should have been on his second magazine, the second someone points a gun at you they are a deadly threat until you can tell they are not. The cop almost got killed worrying if he should keep shooting.
Chalk another one up to good, thorough police work, and a hard charging cop. We'll even give some credit to the Sig Sauer...Performed flawlessly, and did the job. No trial, no waste of tax payers money, just a few dollars spent to replace the spent rounds. Cop should be back on the job in a day or two. Nice job officer Ron!!

Definitely a justified shoot. Couldn’t be anymore clear cut and dry! Sad the guy thought he had to pull a gun a cop just for probably just trespassing but he made his decision and the officer had to defend his life and he did a great job at it
Looks like the guy's gun didn't fire. He pointed it right at the cop and then... nothing. I'm 100% sure if it went off that officer would be dead instead.

Definitely a justified shoot. Couldn’t be anymore clear cut and dry! Sad the guy thought he had to pull a gun a cop just for probably just trespassing but he made his decision and the officer had to defend his life and he did a great job at it
is that a sig and sauer p229?
Well I’m going to miss this Channel
towards the end the cop seems mad like he did something wrong or is he just shooked up?
Looks like the guy's gun didn't fire. He pointed it right at the cop and then... nothing. I'm 100% sure if it went off that officer would be dead instead.
Great job Trinidad P.D,,, Glad you guys were not hurt.
This was a Good shoot. 100% justifiable
justified but they need to start punishing for covering up the body cam
I don't see the black lives matter movement on here...or at least commenting. I guess this doesn't fit their agenda
