I was an uneducated exsoldier and the album "brewing up"it kickstarted something within me, it's a long story, but it started me on a path of self awareness thinking and education, I'm very grateful.
Brilliant song - my younger brother, very sadly passed away introduced me to Mr Bragg a long time ago by lending me the first 2 albums. Love the close, sounds like church bells
As the old adage goes, be wary of meeting your heroes... Well, MANY moons ago, circa 1992, I managed to bluff my way past the grumpy staff clearing up after a memorable gig in 'Parco' - a small club in central Tokyo - and had a leisurely chat with Billy... I am happy to report he was EVERY bit as genuine, gracious and warm as I fould EVER have hoped... A THOROUGHLY nice chap and certainly one of my musical heroes... Oh, the melodies... the lyrics... the memories... ... ... Music with a MESSAGE ... Kia KAHA (ever be strong) from Kiwiland, y'all... ✊😉👍
He's probably the most unguarded lyricist ever. Who else would have the balls (no pun intended) to say, with all seriousness "with my own hands, when I make love to your memory"?
How could anyone put thumbs down to this? I used to listen raw after breaking up with Julie Walterson in Lerwick. I thought and believed love was ever but I guess something about me has never worked cos I loved and lost every single one, and why?
[Verse 1] Thinking back now I suppose you were just stating your views What was it all for For the weather or the Battle of Agincourt And the times that we all hoped would last Like a train they have gone by so fast And though we stood together At the edge of the platform We were not moved by them [Verse 2] With my own hands When I make love to your memory It's not the same I miss the thunder I miss the rain And the fact that you don't understand Casts a shadow over this land But the sun still shines from behind it [Verse 3] Thanks all the same But I just can't bring myself to answer your letters It's not your fault But your honesty touches me like a fire The Polaroids that hold us together Will surely fade away Like the love that we spoke of forever On St. Swithin's Day
big day out at the gold coast u swapped with the 12 man ,,,,,,and when u finally got up .....u asked for requests ....i yelled out 'this guitar says sorry' and u played it like a champ ...my lady of 17 years had never seen u before and was wrapped how you looked at us when you spoke ..political ...and about racism which u gave a great power to u and your audience This song How ever, always gave me hope in finding love ...thanks billy the Polaroid z that hold us forever will surely fade away ...but not in this digital age.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .... .. .. ..
since this song released, i have thought the last words shouted by billy were "maybe im scottish". it is only now, in late april 22 that i realise it is "beam me up scotty"
And the times that we all hoped would last Like a train they have gone by so fast And though we stood together At the edge of the platform We were not moved by them
There aren’t a whole lot of perfect songs in existence. This is one of them.
I was an uneducated exsoldier and the album "brewing up"it kickstarted something within me, it's a long story, but it started me on a path of self awareness thinking and education, I'm very grateful.
Me too.
Music fucking matters, right on!
same .. very grateful .. his music has done the same for me too ,,,
this song will never ever get old ... when Billy strums on his guitar in between verses, it still sends shivers down my spine ...
Brilliant song - my younger brother, very sadly passed away introduced me to Mr Bragg a long time ago by lending me the first 2 albums. Love the close, sounds like church bells
The Polaroids that hold us together will surely fade away like the love that we spoke of forever on St. Swithin's Day.
Those four lines, just make me break down, every time.
Probably my favourite quatrain in pop , ever July 15th, so much to answer for especially when it pisses down on day one
Like a train they’ve gone by so fast
Where did i place all those yesterdays ?

Me too, Toronto 1986, a great discussion on the pending free trade deal. A man of truth.
He's probably the most unguarded lyricist ever. Who else would have the balls (no pun intended) to say, with all seriousness "with my own hands, when I make love to your memory"?
I trust the songwriter much more when they put their shit on the line
How could anyone put thumbs down to this? I used to listen raw after breaking up with Julie Walterson in Lerwick. I thought and believed love was ever but I guess something about me has never worked cos I loved and lost every single one, and why?
Why indeed? It seems that love is something you yearn for yet never truly find.
Got a package back of unopened letters without knowing why.
I was ready to and to leave everything for her. I guess that has been my main fault.
[Verse 1]
Thinking back now
I suppose you were just stating your views
What was it all for
For the weather or the Battle of Agincourt
And the times that we all hoped would last
Like a train they have gone by so fast
And though we stood together
At the edge of the platform
We were not moved by them
[Verse 2]
With my own hands
When I make love to your memory
It's not the same
I miss the thunder
I miss the rain
And the fact that you don't understand
Casts a shadow over this land
But the sun still shines from behind it
[Verse 3]
Thanks all the same
But I just can't bring myself to answer your letters
It's not your fault
But your honesty touches me like a fire
The Polaroids that hold us together
Will surely fade away
Like the love that we spoke of forever
On St. Swithin's Day
David, hope you are still around, we need more like you, free thinkers but loyal to the people..
Oh God, the memories. St Katharine's Dock, London, Friday, 15th July 1988. St Swithin's Day. Where is she now?
I hope you find her my brother.
Rewe parking lot, springtime 2005, Frohnhausen/Lahn
God bless Billy Bragg

Love the story of this song.... How he played it for his girlfriend, and she just cried..... It's that poignant and beautiful....
And the times that we all hoped would last
Like a train they have gone by so fast
And though we stood together
At the edge of the platform
We were not moved by them
