  • This is a video of me putting together the Backyard Discovery Tucson Cedar Wooden Swing Set. I offer a few tips to help get it together correctly, and my overall impression of the swing set.
Overall, it's not too complicated to complete. The project took about 8 hours. I'd say it is a good value for the money, but don't expect it to hold up under a lot of abuse. I would imagine that it will last through one childhood.

Just got done putting together a very similar set(sans the bench). Took me about 7 hours over 2 days working alone. A couple of tips. Get a table to lay out all the hardware bags. There must of been over 30 separate bags of hardware. They are all numbered. Lay them out numerically. The biggest time putting this up was getting all the pieces of hardware needed during each step. Eg. need 3 from bag 6, 2 from bag 34, 4 from bag 78. Also on some installation steps, you'll need different sized nuts, bolts and washers even on the same piece of lumber. Real PIA and it takes a lot of time to figure out which end of the piece needs what sized hardware. Also lay out all the lumber by letter as well so your not on a treasure hunt when you need pieces E1 and N4 for example because there is a lot of lumber. Tip 2 read ahead on the instructions. Some steps can be left for later. No need to put together the swing part when installing it is about the last thing that is done. Same with the Slide. Like Drew, I had a ton of parts left over. Only thing I can figure is that its more cost effective for the manufacturer to include parts for the largest, most complex model they sell then it is to individualize each hardware set to each particular model. However it was shocking to see all those parts left over. East over $25 worth of hardware if one had to buy those items at Lowes/HD/etc.

Omg your video is hilarious. I just built the Prairie Ridge Set we got our 6 year old for her birthday. Let me say, I can take cars completely apart, engines, body and interior you name iit, without instructions. I followed the instructions on this to the best of my ability. My neighbor sat outside on his porch for two and a half days drinking beer and watching me. Is it me or are the instructions very vague? I broke stuff, had to do things twice, remake stuff, gorilla glue stuff, add my own extra bracing and support. You’re correct in saying it’s not made to last the five year warranty.

Dude.... my husband is putting this thing together as we speak and he is so frustrated lol. Ours has 2 boards sandwiched together where the swings come down from so it's different and we cant figure out why the holes dont line up. I told him just go along with it and make it work for him. Sometimes you just gotta improvise I guess but this instruction manual is like reading a foreign language.

I bought the Backyard Discovery Oakmont Swing Set, which is fairly similar to this one. I am a bit intimidated as I am not a skilled builder by and means, neither is the hubby. Might have to call my dad to help. I don't know if I would be brave enough to stand on the playset like you did. Ours is only rated for 150 pounds so I fear falling through.
Estimates for building the set seem to be between 8-13 hours. Suspicious we will be on the higher end of that.

i'm thinking of getting this for my 4 and 2 yrs old. It's my first time getting any kind of playhouse and concerned about water (rain and water from sprinklers). How do you manage water? Are woods all waterproof? Or did you have to put some kind of glazing or waterproof material? If you did, did you put waterproof material before or after buildling?

    • @MrAyrit

The wood is Japanese cedar I believe. Naturally water : bug resistant (I think). I’ve had no problems with the wood. The tarp on top just wore out, but it’s been a few years at this point. Outside of that, it’s held up well.
