They're not laughing at the joke, they're laughing at the situation and Abbott stealing Costello's thunder and Costello's reaction.
Lou Costello (real name Cristillo) was indeed an Italian American and from Paterson, New Jersey originally, born in 1906. Bud Abbott was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey in 1897 into a show business family.
Jonah And The Whale is a Biblical story, Old Testament
I was going to comment this and then I realized this comment is going to over-saturate the comment section. But yeah, Old Testament Bible. After Moses. Brief of it is (and I'm summarizing here) Jonah was called by god to go preach to a city. Jonah said no, jumped on a boat and tried to run away. He fell off the boat and was eaten by a "large fish" or a "great whale" (depending on the translation you're reading) and was left there until he turned a new leaf and decided he'd go and preach. At which point I believe the Bible says the sea creature spat him out, however I don't believe there's any clarification of where that happened; onto shore, on an island, or just in the middle of the sea. In short, Jonah definitely was not an altruistic captain of a boat who got "Pinocchio'd".
only in the bible story no one cut the animal open to find Jonah sitting on a bench selling apples.. I don't think I've ever heard that joke/story before yet Gaynor says she heard it as a kid.
@@kirikayumura6015 I mean I was aware of Jonah and the Whale, not a stool and apples 🤭 Sophie has never heard of Jonah and the Whale.
So yeah... a children's fairy tale.
@@Mr.Ekshin children would know
LOU COSTELLO is the bloke on the LEFT...BUD ABB0T is the bloke on the RIGHT!....BTW...Jonah and the Whale is a BIBLICAL Story!
Neither of them were from New York. Both were New Jersey boys. Lou, as has been mentioned from Paterson; Bud from Asbury Park.
*Amazing Bible Story.*
I CANNOT believe these two have NEVER heard of Jonah and the whale from the Bible!! UNBELIEVABLE!!
I loved their movies so much when I was a kid.
The monster movies!! Muah!! 💋
What innocence filled comedy! So cute and funny.
Lou was born and raised in my hometown Paterson New Jersey. My brothers Godmother lived in the 2 family house he brought for his mother. The first floor apartment is where his mother lived and he stayed upstairs in the 2nd floor apartment when he came back east. I slept in his den a few times.
B.I.B.L.E.!!! It's a best seller.
"Buy-Bull"! 🤣
I was there. Mrs Jonah thought he was lying. Wish we had Snapchat then 🤳
😆😆😆😆
There is so much content from these two. They were very aheadof their time. The first time I ever heard Jackass on TV was from Lou Costello during the Colgate Comedy Hour. I suggest The Necklace, or 7x13=27

@@Rebel9668 i went back and forth with that. Thakyou
@@joejoebrian1014 I'd suggest some of their radio routines as well, like Hertz-U-Drive, The Board Routine, Costello's Farm or even The Story of Moby Dick, lol. Lots of classic skits with them.
Their "Dice Game" skit is a good one too!
Thank you 🙏 RIP 🪦 Abbott & Castillo 💭 new for me 👏👏👏
How has Sophie not heard the Biblical passage about Jonah and the Whale? But that is a joke playing on Jonah's story. Jonah was actually spit out once he agreed to do his mission and went to Ninevah and warned them that God would wipe them out if they didn't repent. They repented and abandoned their evil ways and no fire & brimstone rained on them much to the disappointment of Jonah.
Lenny Bruce, in the late 1950s was the first really succesful comedian who swore.
Jonah is a Bible story!
Loved watching you!
To answer your question, the guy on the left is Lou Costello, and the one on the right is Bud Abbott. This is a story Lou made up for the fun of it. The original "Jonah and the whale" story is in the Bible's Old Testament book of . . . Jonah, but as an alternative, there's a good article in Wikipedia.
Jonah and the Whale is a biblical story from the Old Testament
You both should watch dry bar comedy
Girls only. Love it
Lou Costello talked funny even for that time. Obviously you can hear his geographical origin in his voice (he came from a place called Paterson, NJ not far from New York City), and his accent is fsirly standard for second--and third-generation Americans of Italian ancestry, at that time), but that tone of voice, the register and speed, was all just him, trained on vaudville stages for maximum comedic effect.
HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW THE BIBLICAL STORY ABOUT JONAH AND THE WHALE!!?? REALLY??? 😢
Another story from the Bible is Ricky Gervais' going through the book on Noah's Ark that he got as a kid. Then there is Jim Jefferies with "Heaven and Hell", and "God is Drunk at a Party".
I think Norm Macdonald could have told that joke today and made it funny.
Please do Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?”
We have done it already.
You know, the Beesleys didn’t recognize the name Mark Twain. I think literary education in Britain may be falling short.
When are you guys gonna change the name of the channel and take credit for it's success??
☹️😒
Jonah and the whale isn’t a true story, it’s a Bible story. 🤣
The rapid banter is part of the routine.
The basic premise of this duo is the same as Laurel and Hardy. Two friends trying to scrounge their way through life (think the Depression) one’s more naïve/ grounded and the other thinks he’s clever, comes up with most of the schemes and acts more refined.
They made a joke early in the routine about it being a clean joke.
People knew there was blue humor, they just didn’t broadcast it on radio and newsreels.
Was it a true story? lol
No it’s not a true story…great reaction!
Poor Lou, all amped to tell that old joke based on a bible story only to get it interrupted and spoiled by Abbott.
Bud always delighted in frustrating Lou. But Lou would do the same thing to Bud if he had the opportunity.
Jonah was an Old Testament prophet who was commanded by God to go and preach to the people of Ninevah but he sets sail for Tarshish. A storm hits the ship and the sailors don’t know how to stop it. Jonah eventually tells them the storm is his fault and they should throw him overboard. They’re reluctant to do this but eventually Jonah convinces them and they throw him overboard where he is swallowed by a big fish (whale). Jonah remains in the belly of the big fish (whale) for three days and three nights before God commands the big fish (whale) to spit Jonah out. Jonah goes to Ninevah and is dismayed when the people repent. Jesus mentions the prophet Jonah in Matthew 12:40 “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
Old ass Testament!
Great generation of human beings that shaped our world today…I’m actually embarrassed for today’s generation
Today generation are the ones who destroyed the world it started with the boomers.
Sophie comes from a nation that actually has a national Chritian Religion, does not know about Jonah and the whale . Well I guess technically it is in the old Jewish Testament.
The CofE (Church of England, of which the King is the stated head) has long since lost any resemblance to Biblical Christianity, much like the mainline denominations here in the US. And as in the US, generations of people have never attended church apart from weddings and funerals. I feel old when I say that but I worked with a young woman years ago who had never been in a church until her own wedding. Her husband's family insisted on a church wedding. Their oldest child is now an adult - so yes, generations.
@@cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449 As An American that comes from a completely secular Nation with no National religion, I guess it's just funny to me that we would know more about the Old JewishTestament/Torah stories, even non religious people. And you don't have to get me started about the Church of England, lol technically is our enemy ( dating back to the Pilgrims) along with the crown. I see what you're saying. But we Love our Brit Cousins though.
No, this wasn't their best routine. They had several more that were funnier.
Sophie, we used to dress up a lot to show our respect for each other, and our own self worth. I miss that about our shared culture. Peace
Seriously, you don't know the story of Jona and the whale????
You guys scare me. It’s a bible story. (And this is not the Bible version.)
Jonah and the whale is a Bible story but hardly believable once you get older..
Read your Bible ladies. Head to the book of Jonah in the Old Testament and be enlightened.
A true story ? Seriously? 🤪
Open Holy Bible to "Jonah" - there's much more to this real event involving a prophet of YHWH our God, a large fish, & the immediate fate of the population of a city-state called Ninevah (it's not a joke at all - & doesn't involve a stool & apples... although it does involve a rather substantial gourd at some point).
✝️😎👍
