Although the chain, like many others, originated in southern California, they're relatively popular in my home state of Michigan, and I've been there many a time despite only being born in the 90s.) At the time that Jim Delligatti first created Big Mac for McDonald's, he noticed that the local Big Boy franchise, a drive-in chain called Eat & Park, was making big money serving Big Boy double decker burgers, and he decided he would try to compete by making a similar product. To make a long story short, Big Mac is one of the most famous knockoff products of all time, and yet most people don't even know in the first place that it's a knockoff. The same is true of Oreos, which were designed to compete with a similar cookie called Hydrox (Google it.)
