Had lunch with Professor Grayling in Zürich in early November 2017 - he was attending a conference at which he was speaking. A delightful man. Very gentlemanly and eloquent. Have a photo. I'd doubt he'd remember me, but it was sure memorable for me!!

I grew up in the Reagan 1980's in the bible belt. My second grade class was learning about the Greek and Roman polytheistic religion discounted to myth. I raised my hand to ask, If these people's religion is myth, Why is Jesus not.? I attended all 12 years with the same 120 kids I began. When I was outed as a satanist, explaining I couldn't be satanical wasn't a Christian.

His Humanist Bible is a meditative and reflective book that I use with great benefit often. Ty.
Atheism does not exist. So called atheists simply suppress the truth in their unrighteousness because their deeds are evil. These people are so obviously unreasonable, illogical, spiritually dead and blind, irrational, unscientific and very often quite slow in their thinking. Richard Dawkins thinks Romanism is Christianity when in fact it's at it's core paganism and Freemasonry. He also entertains that aliens might exist and have been the origin of life for goodness sake! i'm very impressed by the somewhat simple and easy way those persons can bring a kind of confidence andunderstanding, what they say are thoughts i have, but couldn't express that clear and understanable (I've never runned university ) they are giving me the happiest happiness I'm living, thank you so much, you are delightful human beings, you are humanists that helped me not to sink into depression for what I learn by reading, thinking and litsening to intelligent enlighting (sorry for my bad English writting, if you speak my laguage, you do not speak the language I use in the beautiful country I live, wich is France, thank you over and again.

@@TheWorldTeacher and certainly to whom? Someone’s dilemma is another’s opportunity.
After going through architecture school, and prior to that having a more "scientifically" inclined education for high school, I think that education should involve something like design coursework, because it asks the student to go through rationality and irrationality in a balanced manner (i.e. having the open-ness to watch as the questions arise and the design intent develops, and using the rationality to try and answer them in a well-rounded manner). Thus, it would be applied and practiced, and critical thinking developed in situ, rather than read and forgotten. I think that's the closest I've experienced to seeing big questions mirrored in day-to-day things (i.e. made objects). And of course this can be abstracted (i.e. the questions such as if math exists in and of itself or if it's invented), which is why I think everyone, no matter their interests, should try and experience some sort of design education in the earlier/formative years of grade school, and then if they really like it can continue in that educational route).
Interesting discussion. It would also be interesting to hear Lawrence Krauss and Carlo Rovelli talk about whether or not the philosophy of science is relevant to physics.

I didn't know Jerry Springer was a reputed scientist.
I really wished Anthony Grayling had brought up the 1979 referendum on Scottish Devolution where at the last minute "An amendment to the Act stipulated that it would be repealed if less than 40% of the *total electorate* voted "Yes" in the referendum.". That's quite a change in the goalposts.
And this leads back to his point that the electorate should understand how we the commoners don't know how important our votes are in terms of "the right to vote" and the people that were imprisoned or died asserting this right. It deeply annoys me.

I agree with Lawrence on the importance of education. As we are seeing, a deep and continuous process of learning on the part of our entire human family is the key and only hope of our progress and survival. A revolutionary educational paradigm must be created and applied based on a new mindset. Learning is for everyone. Knowledge is not a commodity, but a human resource and the source of all human potential. Furthermore, we need the abolition of the slavery of the human mind.

I agree that education is important and the fact of it seems to me practically self evident. However, "key and only hope of our progress and survival" may not be enough. Here's why I hold that view...
I find the Bicameral theory most compelling. It proposes (compressing a 400 page book into a single paragraph) that modern consciousness arose in humanity during a one thousand year span beginning about three thousand years ago. The theory states that, before three thousand years ago, the human psyche lacked a self concept. This lack deprived them of the ability to create a control system that could manage the social complexity that arose whenever population began to exceed about a million members and they collapsed back into tribal communities in the surrounding countryside. This rise and fall of civilization repeated again and again until particular circumstances (involving the invention of writing) gave birth to self consciousness. And so here we are, two thousand years later, living in an extraordinarily successful global civilization with a population approaching eight billion (albeit with a few large groups of retards scattered about).
What I'm suggesting is that we might be in need of another transformative leap in consciousness that will enable us to better manage eight, nine or ten billion people in a way that will conduce to our collective survival.
I can already see a change in the psyches of those who appear to be addicted to networked cell phone technology. The thing that worries me though, I don't believe we have time for a series of failed experiments like the pre-biblical folks enjoyed.
In short, we seem to be in need of a new mode of consciousness. And then there's AI to consider...

So, a separation of powers only works if the powers are separate and stay separate.

AC G called the search for truth, 'The Great Endeavour,' again with LK nodding in agreement. This reminds me of Richard Dawkins and how he speaks about his interest in 'the truth', often implying, or stating explicitly, that the important thing is what is true, not what anybody believes. Why might RG, or AC G, or anyone believe this; that what is true is important/great/good/ etc?

Using Trump as an example of a failure of democracy is to ignore the real reason for his election, which is the that the alternative was Clinton. That could've been seen as at least as drastic an example of a failure of democracy as Trump, if not a greater one. Therefore, that part of the discussion comes off as something more like a partisan riff than an expression of a principled stance.
The reason for his election was the people telling us they are sick of neoliberalism. This 40 year experiment in trickle down economics hasn't worked and people know it hasn't. Trump said he was going to be something truly different and presented himself as something different, Clinton was offering nothing new, same old neoliberal shit. But of course, Trump has shown that he is just as neoliberal as all the elites are.

LK said he thinks of science as rational enquiry. Science is empirical. If the data doesn't seem to fit with what we think is rational; tough; get over it. So I think science is not primarily rational enquiry, although, to point out the obvious, scientists can be rational, especially when hypothesising.

Some thoughts on democracy:
-The word is not contained in the constitution or any of the state constitutions. The US is supposed to be a republic, but is in actuality a national security state.
-What Plato said about democracy is true, and in many ways is what most western countries have today.
-The idea of separation of powers is a farce, and why do you suppose the "founding fathers" could not have come up with a better system of checking on government? After all, most of them had very high IQ's.
-Maybe accepting a system built on the use of force and a two party system is the problem. It has led to the most corrupt of systems where politicians are all millionaires parroting what they think people want to hear in public, and passing laws that oppress behind closed doors.
-I don't accept the authoritarian governments of the world. I never agreed to any contract that was written by rich white guys 250 years ago, and I have never signed anything.
-What is it that people think is so different between Trump and Obama? Other than completely different personalities, policy-wise they are just about identical.
-Why do you say congress is "paralyzed" when it comes to budgets? This is the one area where both parties agree whole-heartedly to spend, spend, spend, tax, tax, tax. They also agree on any law that oppresses, restricts and criminializes the greatest number of people.

Well you are right to say this, none of us agreed to these old contracts, we were just born into these already founded societies. But that's why democracy is important, or at least a type of society where we can express our opinions and be able to propose changes, because we should recognize that we shouldn't exist in a totalitarian dictatorship where we have no say in regards to how our society should function.

They are both on the conservative spectrum, and I'm saying this as an European. I think Grayling agrees that American politics are skewed towards the right. It's just that Trump is a much more divisive person than Obama ever was, much worse in terms of diplomacy too, as he's been burning bridges with other world leaders. But you're right, in terms of policies, there isn't that much difference.

A fascinating conversation but I'm afraid they do hold science in a little too high regard. Science falls fowl of all the same misconceptions as religion. Do you think 9 out 0f 10 Scientists recommend is an endorsement that carries any weight or is as hollow as the promise of God's good graces? It's nice to think people are considered, rational and thoughtful but for the most part, people are not interested in thinking any deeper than their immediate needs. If you put a guy in a lab coat to sell a product in an advert then science will mislead people just the same as any religion, the problem is in people, any philosophy can be used for good or bad effect.

We fixed the video and audio for best experience possible. Cameras are supernatural and all of them captured 3D. The audio loud don't make violence so has depth. Nobody has to buy anything for it to work.

Yes he is against brexit as a bad policy and argues that the decision to proceed with brexit was democratically suspect but not that staying in the EU itself promotes democracy.
