      From my experience things go to hell because this: ppl end up focusing on how fo ACT as said character rhen ROLEPLAY the character.
      Basically say the player picks fighter. What does that translate on roleplay game terms?
      Role: they front line most of time, usually wear armor, swings/defend, usually good str/con/ but weak Int/wis.
      Playing: they stay in front and maintain that. In social they show off muscles (if any) or knowledge of fights they went through.
      Game: how rolls rules work to hit enemies/protect Allie’s. Skills to scare/impress npcs.
      As long said player maintains those roleplay game logic rhen things go smoothly… but if act something they ain’t roleplay wise that’s where deviation happens which can get bad if they act if out too much and/or gm isn’t prepared to respond to that acting then the role playing.

      Cont.
      I’m here because of recent drama in our call of Cthulhu group with me, another player and gm.
      Both me and other player are antiquarians which is usually someone who gathers rare antiques and any hidden info on it. Connections is similar collectors or archeologist that inform us of this. Skills is appraise, spot hidden, history and similar.
      I knew to stick to the occupation/role I picked. The other player didn’t. She picked antiquarian because it sounds cool but she acts like a flip flapper. Note this is 1920s america call of Cthulhu.
      This eventually annoyed the gm when she uses charm which is a weak skill at default since she didn’t improve it for non occupation boosting. Gm ask would you liked to transfer skill points from one you don’t use into charm? She goes lnow it’s fine where it is. But later she gets annoyed on charm rolls fail (to beat a roll you need fo roll target number OR below. Charm from top of my head by default is 10%.) and ask gm just allow her to flirt/persuade npcs. This caused an argument to later I stepped in, advice how to make this happen but she got annoyed for telling me to not tell her how to roleplay.
      To add: she play rpgs but socially she joins theater ppl. So yeah… that explains priorities on how she play as the character. She is acting as the character, but not role playing the character.
      Note: in CoC you can make a occupation and tweak what connections and skills if provided. We try to tell her this on she can do this fo get the ideal way to act and roleplay but I don’t know why she doesn’t want to change/accept it.
      All I can say is there is a reason why it’s a rpg. You pick the role, you play it, then game the rules/rolls. That is the base of it, acting/improving is on top of it but it’s not the core base of it to be truthful.

    I've been playing tabletop RPG's for more than 30 years. Years ago I thought the hobby would die. Basically because of video games. The fact that it's so popular now I'm just flabbergasted. Anyways, thank you for making this video to pass on to the next generation of TRPG gamers.

    • @Khomuna
      @Khomuna 2 роки тому +3

      This new bloom happened partially because of Stranger Things, the show is set in the 80's and the characters are RPG nerds. In the last few years there's also streamed games going on Twitch and UA-cam, like Critical Role, bringing RPGs to the newer generations. This is something that just wasn't possible in the 90s and early 2000s with cable TV.

    • @badfoody
      @badfoody 9 місяців тому +2

      well, video games need you to look at screen. that can be tiring. also video games aren't a social experience the same way tabletops are. Sure you can play together, but a tabletop RPG is a communal experience, face to face, talking to each other.

      yea a lot of the new gm's have a bad habit try to limit the players choices to only a few like in a video game and i found this really annoying because if I wanted a chosen path I would play a video game. I would make a video about the making of a flexible world or something because I had that bad habit myself and it took me a really long time to improve on these kinds of stuff. Other than that I found my experience pretty awesome and exciting

    That was really interesting. I never understood what table top rpgs were before - my son was watching a video on UA-cam of an Australian illustrator who for his birthday was rigging up a camera/green screen to integrate his terrain / minatures with digital art. Then he was talking about the creation of a new game that was a renaissance meets steampunk type thing. Intrigued I searched for an explanation/intro video and found yours.

    It’s not storytelling with rules. A story emerges, but nobody is ‘telling’ it. Not even telling it within the bounds of rules. Not even cooperatively ‘telling’ it.
    This matters, because it determined what the game’s rules need to cover. Storytelling games are a separate class of game with mechanics specifically designed to affect the way a story goes. RPGs are more like simulations, with mechanics designed to support the simulated world and the way each character’s simulated abilities operate.
    Again, yes, a story comes out of it. But the players are not there to ‘tell’. They’re there to be themselves, and to do what they want.
    Gary Gygax understood this, by the way, and said as much.

    Great video, freind, but you use similar gestures too much. When you use the same way to move your hands five times during four seconds (0:25) it makes the video pretty monotonous. As opposed to that, your voice is always full of lots of different emotions. And when you sum these two points, the video becomes very dissonant.
